    I think that should flash red at Hancock Ct. and flash yellow on School Street. Typically, yellow flashing means you have the right of way but should exercise a high degree of caution anyway. It is the same right of way as the flashing green but with an extra emphasis on caution. What should be there is a flashing red for the minor road and flashing yellow on the main. If google maps is anything to go by, they fixed it.

      @@politicallyambiguous8424 yes, I know. The video is from 6 years ago. I complained to the city’s traffic engineer at that time and they assured me that they were going to fix it. I have not been back there since to verify that they have corrected the problem. But I heard that they have and also removed the flashing green LEDs and installed flashing yellows.

Other days I might have over 8 hours of video footage I am going to post in 20 minute segments where dropping two videos a day will carry me through the days I don’t use the footage. As well I download the video footage once a week from my dash cam, then I have to edit the video, render it and then upload it all around working my 40-60 hour a week job. • @drivingnewengland-thedrive
      @drivingnewengland-thedrive Před 5 měsíci

      People have places to be. Not everyone only works during daylight hours or drives during daylight hours. All the stuff you see in Walmart or other stores, are delivered by trucks which drive over the road at all hours of the day. As well planes fly 24 hours a day people need to get to and from the airport. Lots of stuff happens over a 24 hour day. There are many people who work odd shifts like hospital workers, highway workers, restaurant workers, etc. Their shifts could be 12am to 12pm, 3am to 3pm and so on. And with night being between sunset and sunrise 6am and 6pm could be dark enough for night during certain times of the year. So at some point somewhere someone has to travel at night. You don’t have to be a cop or criminal to drive around at night. Driving at night is not against the law.

    • @drivingnewengland-thedrive
      @drivingnewengland-thedrive Před 8 měsíci

      On this installation, no it doesn't. But in the past when there were more installations like this around they would have cross on yellow-red signal. But at any rate, here in Massachusetts pedestrians do what ever they want, jaywalk, cross against the light, etc. so most of the time pedestrian signals are just extra devices that annoy pedestrians and drivers. Having traveled to different a number of countries, all tourist should take it upon themselves to understand pedestrian laws and signals, because not all counties give the same respect to a person in the crosswalk. I have been to Peru where they use green walking man/red standing man. Numerous times there some installations that use countdown to death timers, I've started crossing on the green man with 99 seconds on the clock then at 97 it drops to 0 and traffic begins to move, so as a tourist the person really needs to observe how things work in the place they're traveling to.

    • @drivingnewengland-thedrive
      @drivingnewengland-thedrive Před 9 měsíci

      The reason for the flashing red is because it conveys the same rule as a stop sign. Just as a flashing red and yellow beacon with the yellow flashing from the main street and the flashing red on the side street reinforced that the side street is required to stop prior to proceeding when it is safe to do so. If it was flashing green in that conflicting direction then drivers from both directions would believe that they had right of way and crash.

      Just before I took the video, there was one of the many bad summer 2023 thunderstorms that rolled through. It caused major problems with the signal system on the Haverhill Line. The dispatcher placed a “Stop and Protect” on most if not all crossing until a signal maintainer got out to each crossing. That’s why both the Downeaster and Keolis trains stopped and flagged the crossing.

    Where did you get a sequencer to make it do the Massachusetts flashing green pedestrian sequence? I have an 8-8-8 GE grooveback signal in my bedroom with a sequencer and it doesn’t have this sequence.

    • @drivingnewengland-thedrive
      @drivingnewengland-thedrive Před 10 měsíci

      This particular controller I got from Joe'z Garage at www.joezgarage.com/ . The standard sequences that are loaded on to the board are as follows: 1. Standard G - Y - R with adjustable timing for each phase. 2. Flashing Red. 3. Flashing Yellow. 4. Alternating Red and Yellow. 5. School Zone, 2 alternating outputs with one steady on. 6. Pedestrian Walk/Dont Walk Then I had added the following sequences in addition to the above: 7. Standard G - Y - R - Y&R - R 8. Flashing G - Y - R - Y&R - R (Note the flashing green could be yellow or red instead.) The board from Joe'z Garage is a single red/yellow/green output meant for one signal head, but I have run two signal heads off of the single output, one head fully LED red/yellow/green and the second head with 69w traffic signal bulbs red/yellow/red lenses. There is another source for traffic signal sequencers is Sean Breen from Canada www.youtube.com/@SeanB88/featured . I had two 12vdc sequencer boards made for mine and a friend's railroad dwarf signals to display a bunch of aspects. He will make a board for just about anything, flashing beacons, RRFB's, HAWK's, sloppy cams, flashing yellow turn signals, etc. They are pricey, but you get exactly what you want. In addition to this 8" TCT signal I have a 8" Mark IV, Eagle and a 3M PV worded pedestrian signal that I want to get a custom controller from Sean Breen to make a full intersection with different phase sequences, unfortunately that hasn't been a priority.

    As of Friday, 7 May 2023, the flashing circular green has been replaced back with a flashing circular yellow like it was with the older signals - not sure when this was changed out.

      Probably was an experiment or got a ticking off from higher up. Either way the flashing green or yellow is better than Hawk beacons

    Thanks a lot! You allowed me see the house where my Aunt used to live and that we visit every summer in the 70s when I was a young teenager. The house is at the Dubuque and Amory corner (the white house on the right). She lived on the second floor. I have so great memories from these trips. I live in Québec so going to Manchester at that time was a great adventure to me. I remember walking up to Elm Street for shopping, passing thru the iron bridge. Thanks again, you made my day... Conrad😃

      Not a problem. Glad to help. I know a lot has changed in Manchester since the time you were younger. I never got to see the Notre Dame Bridge (the iron bridge), that was replaced before I moved up here from the Boston area. That area of Manchester still has a lot of French and French Canadian's living there and a NUMBER of restaurants that serve poutine. I hope soon I will get up to visit Montreal again and Quebec, I was up in Montreal back in 2011, ended up visiting on the Canadian Thanks Giving, wasn't the best choices of weekends to visit, but it was a beautiful city to visit and I would love to visit Quebec as well.

      @@drivingnewengland-thedrive I am surprised that there are still French speaking people in Manchester today. I thought that after 2 or 3 generations people won't bother to learn french anymore since there is not many incentive to do so. I remember, the last time I went to Manchester by myself in the early 80s, I asked a young girl working in a store if she happened to speak french and she gently reply that she used to buy kind of losing it due to lack of practice. Wow! poutine in Manchester... my favourite is the one with sausage in it. I was born in Québec City and lived there for over 50 years. Today I lived in the south side of the St-Laurent river in a small historic town (Beaumont) for a peacefull retirement. Québec is a wonderful city and if you decide to visit one day I will be glad to give some tips and advices and any help you may need. Have a nice weekend, Conrad

    This trip was definitely not taken on a Saturday afternoon. Otherwise, there would have been a long line of cars waiting to exit Route 24. 😉

      I could almost agree with you, but the fact I cannot change is that November 25, 2022 was my day off and I drove to IKEA and Jordan's Furniture in Stoughton. I have been driving all over Massachusetts since 1989 and knowing when and where the holes in traffic are very important. If there was traffic on 24 I would have gotten off at 138 and either gone through Stoughton Center or taken Randolph Street to York Street then to Page Street and Turnpike Street and finally to Central Street and onto Stockwell Drive.

    cool traffic lights. they have a flashing traffic lights that gives red and yellow signal where I live. and a flashing en traffic light at the fire department.

      Sounds like the fire headquarters on Quincy Avenue in Quincy, MA. The signals at this location have a few different setups. When I grew up there it just was flashing green that changed to yellow then red for the fire trucks. Then in the 1990's the city changed from flashing green to flashing yellow, and then they added the red rotating beacon to the top of the signal head. Then with the flashing yellow setup it was both without the yellow and red and with yellow and red with the rotating beacon. Then they finally went back to the flashing green with the yellow and red and rotating beacon.

  • @WestCoastTrafficSignals

    Looks like the flashing green exists outside of British Columbia! Although in BC, the side-street just has a stop sign instead of a flashing yellow/solid-red light.

      Yes, Massachusetts has been the home of the flashing green for well over 50 years. The side street signal in the video is partially incorrect. When flashing green is used on the main road the side street needs a flashing red to convey the same meaning as a stop sign when in the flashing phase. So the flashing yellow ball facing the side street should be a red flashing ball. So the side street signal should be red/red not red/yellow. Now in older installations the set up was a three section red/yellow/green for the main street and red/yellow/red for the side street, there the red that would be in the green section would be the red that flashed. With this setup the signals when changing it would go from flashing green/red to all directions yellow and then to red and then for pedestrian crossing phase the red and yellow would be lit at the same time. The newer installations they have removed the yellow from the side street, sometimes it's just a red/red signal and sometimes it is a red/yellow/red and the yellow is not used and remains dark, as well they have added the separate pedestrian signal with the hand/man.

    They have that in Canada 🇨🇦 And especially in British Columbia and Ontario. Maybe we should use that for bicycles and pedestrians. 🟢 Green Flashing light means yield for pedestrians.

      The Canadian locations and Massachusetts are the only locations that use flashing green. Here the flashing green means the same thing as a flashing yellow, proceed with caution, signal can change at anytime, as well it indicates that the signal does not control the flow of traffic. The flashing green pedestrian signals were used at intersections where a controlled pedestrian crosswalk was needed, but the traffic control could still be done with a stop sign. So the flashing green would face the main street and a flashing red would face the side street in place of a stop sign. The old setups would change from flashing green/red to all directions yellow and then to red. And then to indicate pedestrian walk phase the red and yellow would display at the same time on all signal heads. Some of the installations still in place now even though they have a three light signal facing the side street, only the top red will flash and then will change to steady when the setup changes to yellow, as well they have added pedestrian signal heads for the walk and don't walk phases.
