    This video brings my time in Cornwall to an end, its been an amazing, and fun experience putting this together across the course of August, sharing not just the Photography trips out from what is a stunning region, but the whole trip from leaving home to the journey as well - I will be back out in Kent with the Camera next week, and weather dependant, this wont be the last trip outside my home county in 2024. Great video and images from your first day. That was an epic drive down to Cornwall, we spent many happy holidays in a tent, I remember having a marathon drive to the lake district in a metro towing a trailer loaded with camping equipment. We switched from a tent to a caravan many many years ago, can't beat the comfort of the caravan, we do miss the ease of camping trips compared to dragging a 30 foot 1.5 ton caravan around the countryside. Take a look at our holiday vlogs. Looking forward to the next installment. If you ever get near Weymouth Bennets world of water is the place to visit for lilies.

      I should have done on the way home mate... Took me forever to get back to Kent!! - The A303 is hell Erm - Really good question... Its easy in the sense that I can jump on Instagram see locations, and see what shots have worked in the past. Yet at the same time, I can get to a location, and its completely different to what I suspected, Wheal Coates for example was so much more hilly than what I thought it would be - I also address it in a video that's coming up, about Long Exposures... I find them so easy here, because there isn't that much surf, whilst the waves create so much down in Cornwall, I actually find them a touch harder.

      Seems these days, it doesnt matter what gear you use... Its all really costly sadly - Remember though, we might just be hobbyists with Photography, but at least the pressure is off, and we can just enjoy the moments, without worrying about whether we'll make money from it.

  • @DominikMarczuk
    @DominikMarczuk Před 28 dny

    I look around for gear on auction sites and in pawn shops. I don't mind used gear, in fact, I've only had a few brand new pieces of kit in my entire life, and even these were either bought with someone else's money (I spent part of a grant on photo gear once) or at a decent discount, after hunting for a few months. It makes no sense to pay the full price unless you really have to. That being said, gear needn't be super expensive; it's our expectations that are too high. We **want** those megapixels, we don't **need** them. Meanwhile, you can get excellent photos on a DSLR that's ten years old or even on a film SLR. File down your expectations and you'll be amazed at how little you actually **need** to pay for gear.

      @neilstevensphotography Před 28 dny

    Great video Neil, some really nice images too. I think there are two types of images, one that you take of a grand vista type scene where the landscape does all the work for you. And then there are ones that look meh, that you see every day and you have to work to make a good composition, something you demonstrate by taking photos in the same locations, you make the ordinary look awesome. I think that’s what makes it worth it for me. It keeps me trying, because I don’t have the epic landscapes

  • @pauljenkin297
    @pauljenkin297 Před 28 dny

    Street photography and documentary photography are often conflated. Both are perfectly and equally valid genres but the best definitions I've come across are that the 'street' shooter specifically avoids contact with the subjects whereas the documentary shooter often creates some element of social contact / staging of the shot. Cartier-Bresson and Joel Meyerowitz and good examples of street shooters whereas the likes of Steve McCurry and Lee Miller are more documentarists. I've always found street photography (in particular) to be much easier in large / busy towns and cities. Blend in with the crowd, use a small / rangefinder style camera (or even iPhone). Urban shooters tend to fall into one of two categories. The first is a 'hunter'. Constantly moving and shooting opportunistically. The other is a 'fisherman' - who tends to pick a spot where the background and light are as required - and will then stand and observe for minutes (hours, even) until the scene reveals itself.

    • @neilstevensphotography

    Some nice shots, Neil. I'm not sure if you're familiar with her work but there was a lady photographer / environmentalist called Fay Godwin who used to photograph man's impact on the landscape. Definitely worth checking out her books. I was luck enough to meet her at an exhibition many years ago. Here's a link to her Wiki page: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fay_Godwin

  • @pauljenkin297
    @pauljenkin297 Před 28 dny

    As far as social media is concerned, Neil, I don't believe it's important at all. I agree that it can be fun but it can also take up time which could be better spent taking photos, tending to the garden or just going for a walk. Clearly, it's different if you're trying to build a following and/or becoming a professional. One negative I have is getting to somewhere I actually find interesting and WANT to photograph. East Anglia (where I live) doesn't inspire me at all and because it's so far away from the hills and mountain scenery I love, getting there requires planning and a budget. Another negative is when shooting in the middle of the day is the only time available. I have found a way to flip this, though; get an infrared (IR) converted camera. Bright sun, high contrast, etc are the ideal conditions for IR and I always pack my IR body whenever I'm out - just incase the skies are blue and the contrast is off the scale.

    • @neilstevensphotography
      @neilstevensphotography Před 28 dny

      Yeah I can really relate to what you say there Paul... Social Media is one for me, where I just get bored of having to take the time to post, as its just a chore, this is where I like YT as it allows me to add in the experience of getting out to the location, and sharing the Images in one go - Agree as well about the planning needed to go further afield, I'm off to Cornwall on Friday for a week, and in the process now actually of looking around for various spots to get out with the Camera!! I like the idea of getting a IR Camera, and think its one of the best aspects of Photography, in the sense that there are no limitations, Landscape Photography may be our favoured avenue for example, but no where does it stop you from branching out to other areas of the hobby

  • @neilstevensphotography

      @jonnyspeed6099 thanks for the comment... It really depends on the shot really, majority of the time I'll expose to the right, so that there is the slightest spike - Otherwise I tend to Bracket, so take three shots, one over exposed, one under exposed (the Sunrise shots were taken that way), and then use Lightroom to merge them together. Have never used Shutter Speed compensation, I shoot completely in Manual mode when doing it, watching the Histogram more than the EV to be honest Hope that helps?

    I bought my first DSLR in April 2010. I thought I'd need it for work. I didn't. I tried out the camera and then left it buried in the closet. I started taking photographs three years ago when I launched my CZcams channel and needed to make thumbnails. While food photography wasn't my thing and I think most of my video thumbnails suck, I did develop an interest in other photography genres, macro initially, then landscape/woodland. Lately, I've been trying out some street and architecture photography. So I had a very competent camera with two equally competent (even by today's standards) lenses for ten years. I could make good use of the gear, but I didn't. This is my greatest regret.

      Yeah I can definitely relate to that, what with getting my first DSLR in 2013, which I barely used for eight years!! - Hope that you feel as though you're getting much more use out of it now though?

      @@neilstevensphotography Mirrorless cameras are easier to use because you always know the exposure you're getting. The histogram is an added bonus. Great photos as always mate, early morning are always best for photography, nobody around and plenty of time before the day starts. loved the images of the abandoned buildings. No time like the present, get yourself back out there and make a video about it, would be great to see the difference. My biggest regret was buying before knowing, I spent way too much money on things I didn't really need lol love a long exposure shot, probably my favourite kind.

    I did photography at school back in the day when we did CSE's! I bought a film SLR during a gap year in 1984 but didn't really keep up with photography for many years. I wish I did. Despite that I took some interesting photos in the 1980s and 1990s which are a record of decades which have now past. Although I regret not doing as much photography as I could until a few years ago, we are fortunate in the range of modern cameras and lenses. It's never too late to start. Yeah I've always loved the trip out to Cliffe Pools as well, dont get out there enough - The Explosion Works (not the Muntion Works as I incorrectly stated) were something I found randomly on Google Earth, and was a lovely but tiring trek up there... Definitely wont be the last time I go there either, shame its not easier to access the grounds, as imagine some close up shots would be even better

    I always hide that I'm taking photos when there are people around. Not because I'm nervous of confrontation - more that I can't be ARSED talking to people about it. When I hear, "What's 'e doin'?" "'E's tekkin' pictures!" "'Ere! What you tekkin' pictures of, mate?" The thought of trying to explain that I like the way the light is playing off the side of a leaf fills me with absolute dread. 😅
