In the heat of the war, the US Army rolled-out an ambitious strategy to counter the German Panzer force: the tank destroyer concept.
Designed to be nimble and lethal, these specialized units were supposed to be the silver bullet against enemy armor.
But as the dust settled and history was reviewed, questions arose about their effectiveness.
Did these specialized vehicles live up to their promise? Were they truly necessary or was their impact on the war overestimated?
Was this bold military doctrine a masterstroke of tactical innovation or was it a doomed endeavor from the start?
Join us as we delve into the history and effectiveness of the US Army’s tank destroyer units, uncovering the strategic decisions, battlefield realities and lasting legacy of these controversial machines.

Moscow was less important than Kyiv because Kyiv was the historical heart of the Slavs.. Moscow is a second rate city from a historical and independent perspective when compared to Kyiv. Hitler recognize that the Russians were inferior to the Ukrainians in terms of bravery, fight spirit and intelligence. He knew that Ukraine was more important from all perspectives.

Von Manstein was largely responsible for Stalingrad. He was the typical career politician. The same types of ‘yes men’ rubbish of the middle-classes / over-privileged classes which we see all around Germany today again - and not only in Germany anymore. Never ever trust again the political / oligarchic cults of Berlin, Rome and New Rome ((the original name of Washington DC).

One more flaw was the famous "shot trap" between the cannon frontal half cylindrical cover and the top flat plate of the tank. If a shot hit the lower frontal side of the half cylinder where the cannon is fixed it most probably ricochet and penetrate the top plate of the tank below with disastrous effect.

The Original Sherman was perfect for what is was designed for, people do not realize it was not a Heavy Tank, its designation and design was officially Medium Tank, M4. And could hold their own against the other mediums. German Panzer IV, Soviet T-34. Further modifications improved it but over all did not improve survivability head on with the heavy tanks.

There are so many false information spread about german tanks. Tiger I was planned as a super heavy break trough weapon, it was never planned to produce it in huge numbers. The panther was the next generation of the Panzer 4, he should become the new standard, and was still in the ramp up phase of mass production. The USA and Russia build by far the most tanks in 1944 and 45, because their production reached optimal output at this time, while the german production broke down at this time due to the permanent bomb attacks on their logistic and production sites combined with a lack of everything. In 1940 to 1942 the german tank production was very high, comparing the population of Germany with the USA or Russia. The Stug III and IV were the german low budget tanks and very successfull.

I believe the tank destroyer concept was flawed and its disappearance after the war supports that conclusion. The TD strategy didn't merge well with the overall nature of the allied offensive nature while TD's tasks were basically defensive. Another problem arose because they looked like a tank and too many commanders figured if it looked like a tank it could fight like a tank. So they tried to use them like tanks if no real tanks were available. That was bad news for the TD because their light armor was vulnerable to about everything that was shot at them.
