    Someone should make a parody musical about the philippine American war, done in the style of hamilton but with deliberately distasteful songs like in oh what a lovely war. The finale could have the American protagonist expressing relief at surviving and expecting to be welcomed home as a hero only to discover that nobody cares about his comrades sacrifice because they are preoccupied with the big war in flanders

    So, the obvious question, what makes you believe that Stalin was evil? Actually, please define evil, first of all. Neill Ferguson: "Allied troops often saw the Japanese in the same way that Germans regarded Russians-as Untermenschen (i.e., "subhuman")." Indeed, anti-Japanese racism was commonplace within the American military due, in part, to "yellow enemy" propaganda as well their experiences of Japanese brutality in combat; a poll of American soldiers from 1943 found that half of the respondents believed that the extermination of all Japanese people would be necessary to achieve peace." How many civilians were murdered by firebombing and nuclear explosions in Japan and Germany? Korea and Vietnam got literally leveled to the ground with carpet bombing, POWs were routinely massacred, women and children raped and exterminated. You ever heard of Julian Assange? Why is he being hunted like he committed Jeorge Bush junior level war crimes? European invaders, who claim to be "Americans" have existed like vicious animals since they started exterminating native population and they never stopped. Even today you can hear your leaders claiming that supporting Ukraine and expanding the war is good, because it's a cheap way to weaken Russia by hurting their material wealth and reducing it's population. "American psychiatrist M. Scott Peck describes evil as a kind of personal "militant ignorance". According to Peck, an evil person is consistently self-deceiving, deceives others, psychologically projects his or her evil onto very specific targets, hates, abuses power, and lies incessantly. Evil people are unable to think from the viewpoint of their victim." In conclusion, this whole "righteous indignation" or whatever it's supposed to be - is ridiculous and pathetic. Go work on your own glaring mistakes, instead of sticking your nose into other people's business. If you think you have some moral authority, you're completely delusional.

    There are more women in fields like medicine and engineering in Russia and other former Warsaw Pact countries than there are in their Western European counter parts. The big reason why is because for all their faults the Soviets, and Leftist political movements in general, really did prioritize emancipation of women. You could imagine how that promise of liberation can be appealing if your only prospects in life were marriage and becoming a baby making machine. Especially in a country like Spain which was very underdeveloped and still ruled over by tradition and conservative values.

    I’ve been recommending this movie to friends and family for years. I’m a huge history buff and they were all asking for films about war and they wanted the ones with the ugly truth. This was in my top 3 list with Uncut version of the pianist. There is something about these movies that there are times in my life I go back to watch them to remember how when you think you’ve hit the worst.. imagine being in those worlds. Reminder to be grateful yet awake and aware, always.

    The film isn't too bad. However I do hate how it, and its sequel Goyo, sparked a frenzy of vilification against Aguinaldo. I enjoyed both on the first watch, but after witnessing the Aguinaldo hate they (perhaps unintentionally) created, I can no longer stomach either. There were also several inconsistencies in the uniforms and equipment where the producers did not follow, or wait for, their historical consultants' advice.

    The saddest part was that the Filipinos were actually relatively well equipped after President Aguinaldo purchased of arms at HK and not to mention the offered support of the Japanese to arm Filipinos. But then again Kawit faction has already made up their mind ever since they killed Bonifacio. It’s just a matter of who’s the highest bidder and it just so happens that it’s the Americans. PS. I love the fact that Jhonny said “Filipino American War” instead of “Philippine insurrection” like history books always write it. Because it’s not an insurrection it’s an invasion of a sovereign country.

    • @systemical1
      @systemical1 Před 4 dny

      Only 2000 weapons were purchased in Hongkong I think, and the Japanese ship carrying weapons to Filipinos sank before it could reach them sadly...

  • @theotherohlourdespadua1131

    As a Filipino, I hated this film because it's nothing more than anti-Aguinaldo propaganda. For anyone who is serious in studying Filipino revolutuonary history, Antonio Luna is a lowkey villian. For one, it was Antonio Luna who squealed to the Spanish colonial authorities leading to Jose Rizal's arrest, mistrial, and subsequent execution in 1897. He didn't do jack squat in the first half of the Revolution. He only became Director of War in 1899 through Nepotism (Felipe Buencamino - minister plenipotentiary to the US - was his backer) and everyone in the Aguinaldo government save Aguinaldo hate his guts; even Apolinario Mabini (Prime Minister at the time) object to his appointment on thr basis that he was convicted of murder of a Chinese Sanglay merchant in Bulacan in 1887 where he escaped from justice. Even the army hates his guts due to his very abrasive attitude and him being a Nepo appointee didn't endear him to most of the soldiers. His death is more or less a well-deserved fragging than an assassination of a beloved hero. I hate that this film or this loe life ofna human being got the recognition he did not deserve...

Its one of my all-time favourite underrated historical films, alongside The Bounty, Ghost and the Darkness, and Lion of the Desert. It follows the Burton & Speke expedition, its broadly accurate but has a great sense of scale and adventure, cinematography by Roger Deakins, made by the same director as Five Easy Pieces and King of Marvin Gardens,

      If you read what he did during the Revolution, he didn't deserve the praise Filipinos of today pour upon him. To start, he is the reason Jose Rizal got executed for treason. He didn't do anything during the First half of the Revolution and got the position of Director of War through nepotism. He was hated by just about everyone in both the government and army because of his nepotism and acting like a learned veteran of the revolution. Nobody except Aguinaldo respected him...

    It's also interesting to note that the Pinoy-American war had a big impact on American arms and tactics and may be one of the big reasons behind the adoption of the Garand and the .45 acp for pistols and sub guns.

  • @butternutmunchkin
    @butternutmunchkin Před 5 dny

    What I appreciated about the movie is that we told history for what it really is, with emphasis on the crumbling unity of the Filipinos due to self-interest, envy and misplaced sense of importance. No native troops miraculously defeating more technically superior "American devils" through dramatic scenes of self-sacrifice or raw burst of fury. Some would see this lack of victory it as defeatist, self-flagellating, and a subtle praising of foreign power. But the tragic story that unfolded in the movie tells the sad truth about the cancer in the Philippine society - division and pettiness (in Filipino author Nick Joaquin's words, "A Heritage of Smallness"). "Heneral Luna" subtly reminds us modern-day Filipinos that we will continue to progress slowly and poorly as a nation if we keep looking only after ourselves instead of looking after the greater good. Hence, the title caption "Bayan o Sarili (Nation or [One]self?)" is not merely a dialogue in the film but a question that requires deeper reflection by all who viewed the movie.

    Fun fact: the director of this movie is one of those individuals who hated the americans, translated well in this movie. Considering most anti-americans in the Philippines are communists, Possibly the director of this movie too, as its already well-known that ever since 1980's many anti-american movies are mostly directed by communists.
