Playing my Doral mounted pipes again. As much as I like playing the MacRaes I still get more of a kick playing my own pipes.

    Thank you for sharing. The finished product looks great!

    Thanks for sharing! I've got an old set I'm about to tackle I like your waxed hemp trick, a lot less intrusive than a combing tool.

    Hey there! What kind of wood lathe you recommend for refurbishing pipes? And at what speed it should spin? Thank you!

    Sir! Tanks so much for this! Would you please make a video - with your very clear explanations - on the process showed in the video (Fasttime) from the 08:41 mark to 09:04 please? I guess that include the initial sanding, hemped and polish and the final polish. That would be great. I just got a vintage set of pipes from an old friend of mine but they need to be refurbished and I don't have the $500 for having professionally done here in Canada (plus double shipping costs). Thank you kind Sir!

    I just had mine completely refurbished.. the old Caitlin was cracked and they were looking like crap… never was able to find markings on them either… but they always sounded great… took them to an old fella named Gord Tuck (Ont 🇨🇦) and he confirmed they’re a nicer old handmade instrument with Henderson bores! Likely a Henderson maker who went out on his own but took along his tools from the previous shop. I had been playing the reproduction Duncan MacRae’s for the past two years… got my old pipes back from Gord… tied them into an old L&M leather bag and my GOD they were so much lighter and sweeter sounding… I missed them so

    Hey mate, I wanted to say thank you so much for these videos! I'm in the slow process of bringing my 1940s ivory Lauries back to life after taking a 20 year break. Your black hemp trick on the combing is going to be life changing!! Please keep on posting, your knowledge is so valuable! What was the name of the combing tool you used?

      It’s called the Iona Boat Song. It’s a lovely tune I used to play in the police band along with Skye Boat Song.

    Super impressed. What finish did you put on them? I’ve got an older set of pipes that needs a new finish, been oiling them slowly but was curious what to use as a finish.

      Hi Alex, I use Shellawax Glow, it’s an Australian product. You need a lathe to apply it. Cheers, David. www.ubeaut.com.au/glow.htm

    Not a criticism, but why did the person opt to shorten the blow pipe vs the shortening the mouthpiece? It’s their instrument so they can do what they like I was just curious. Also I don’t find the videos boring at all!

    • @macdonaldbagpipes3771
      @macdonaldbagpipes3771 Před 3 lety

      Hi Alex, That’s a great question. Shorter blowpipe mouthpieces are available but only in plain plastic. If a piper wants to retain their three piece mouthpiece for aesthetics then this is the option. I have heard people say that if you shorten the blowpipe and then your mouthpiece breaks (not that I’ve seen that happen) then a standard length blowpipe is easier to source as a replacement. It’s horses for courses to a certain degree.
