Connor McDavid Skating Skills That Don't Get As Much Attention
I like the drill but might increase interference calls - I prefer this with a puck so the contact is legal.
Or you could have them handle the puck
Some of these clips of drills have me questioning why I stay subbed. Not personally a fan of training in ways that don’t apply to real situations. Also, hockey coaches and camps seem very guilty of convoluted, overly complex drills which seem to only serve the coaches need to micromanage and overcompensate with overly complex drills which are nearly impossible to remember. Just some thoughts.
How do you change it?
It looks like your glide foot is angling outwards on a diagonal, rather than tracking straight ahead. Doesn't that reduce efficiency?
Hi Ryan. Do you have a book for hockey power skating? And, do you conduct seminars for other power skating coaches? I work with an amazing program in Colorado called the Colorado Extreme. My background is a figure skating coach, for many years, but have now become a huge hockey fan and love our kids! As they improve, I need to as well. Please check out our organization on line - the mission is inclusivity and no skater pays a penny - for anything. We will have 5 sheets in western CO this coming season and are growing at a crazy speed. I love your passion for the game and your videos and would like to attend a workshop if you have them. Thank you!
Great explanation on how to learn how to hockey stop.
This is my best friend
How long should a slide board session be? Just picked up a Bauer one for my son
found my answer! czcams.com/video/VoqbiDb31II/video.html
I love the idea of tight, looser, tight but I feel like after skating for a few minutes, It would balance out and be mostly too loose?
The Sparx machine offers something that most proshops can't, and that is consistency. You get the same sharpening every single time which is not possible at most proshops. I sharpened and profiled skates for 35 years. Started with an old Fero, then Foley, Blademaster, and then Wissota. While the finish of the Sparx isn't quite as good as I could offer with the a conventional machine, it is still quite good. The machine only puts the hollow in the blade, the true art comes in how the blade is deburred after grinding. There is a youtube video on my channel on how I debur. It was shot long before I bought a Sparx but the technique is the same.
Great video but i have a question. When you tie your skates like that, do you feel maximum control on the ice the same you would if you were to tie your skates tight all the way to the top?
I absolutely do, I know pros that are so tight their feet are purplish red after games and other pros that I have no idea how their edge work is so good when they are so loose. I can't state this enough....the only thing cookie cutter advice is for making cookies. The only time I tell a player about their stick flex, lie, kick weight, or skate fit to shin guards over or under the lounge is if it affects performance. Otherwise it's up to the individual. Sit and listen sometime to all the free advice out there. There's a ton, you have to find what works best for you or have a professional watch your mechanics and sort through it.
I tighten my laces medium/tight/loose :O
What does this teach (or develop) a player by having them knuckle dragging as part of the drills requirement?
It’s not that it’s just to get a better angle
Challenging a players mobility and body control is always a good idea after they have mastered their fundamentals
Nice
Good tips. The music in the background makes it harder to hear your message though.
Geoff Sanderson
Why do your arms come through palms up?
There was a Russian team were there coach made the players skate with no laces
I cant find the 3x pro’s in a 9.5 fit 2 anywhere!!!
SidelineSwap is where I'd look. I had problems find my current skates but SS game through in the clutch.
Hi, have you ever had your skates sharpened by a Cag One machine? I've been trying to do research on these machines, but seem hard to find on the internet. Looks like that machine is using a grinding wheel more similar to a Blademaster or Blackstone. In fact they use the same dressing spinners as the Blackstone machines, they are interchangeable. Would love your thoughts.
I have not had a Cag One machine sharpen..... I used to grind my own edges at the shop, but if you look at those it's an entire solid stone not just a plastic hollow wheel laced with a stone coating...might be why I preferred a real shop sharpen.
At least get the kids to do it the same. They all seem to have the habit of kicking up the leg when it comes back in the other shorts. The slide board is gimmicky in general though
Thanks you only see a glimpse, something I'm always correcting and coaching and I have more videos on why the Frontal Plane training is so important. If you used correctly not gimmicky at all.
@@DuPrawPowerskating i just notice it on most of the videos where the slideboard was used. i figured since you chose the clips that it would be of one that showed the exercise being done correctly.
@PaperCut2UGaming unlike some creators I like to show the good the bad and the ugly...good luck with your gaming 😉
Great Job
Do you need waxed laces for the front to be thight and the middle to be lose?
No just use regular laces....but this is a technique I developed for myself over 35 years...takes time to find your way.
Travel
The loose part doesn't make sense to me. I feel confident that it'll just creep the looseness into the other parts of the laces that you have right
Wish I could hear anything BUT the music
Cab you use this routine using a slide board?
If you line it up right you could open hip and slide...yah , be careful but great 💡 idea
My figure skating coach taught me to do this by driving with the skating foot, and keeping the other foot still. I couldn’t do it in my Bauer customs, switched to True TF9, and suddenly it’s really easy. In fact all edge drills are much easier. I feel far more balanced. No-one else seems to find this, and I always thought it was the skater, not the skate. Maybe I’m unusual.
When I tried on Trues I feel like the boot was higher on my ankle which like a figure skate ⛸️ is way higher on the ankle. I wonder if this kind of support or feel was closer to that with a True unlike Bauer or CCM hockey boots.
@@DuPrawPowerskating Absolutely. Put my Bauer 2S Pro custom next to my True and the latter has a lower leg hugging shape, and you see immediately that the Bauer is really wide, huge amounts of space, and not so high. I love the Trues, but as I said, this might just be due to my feet being unusual, or some weird biomechanics on my part. A skater at the local rink does figure skating moves in his Bauers, no problems.
Good drills but very hard to unterstand anything due to the background music
That was really good. Thank you.
Glad you liked it!
Hello, what would you recommend for the best hollow on a U8's skates? He is 46 lbs. He is currently on a standard 1/2" hollow but I've been reading a lot and I'm seeing recommendations for 5/8s and even 3/4 for better glide and learning proper edge work. Any thoughts?
You will hear all kinds of different opinions telling you that there is a 100% right way. I think a half is fine and experiment in the off season, you will find out quickly what works for him.
@@DuPrawPowerskating right on, we have been experimenting. We are currently using 3/4 fire. He has been improving steadily and said he prefers his skates “slippery “
Omg! Get to the point. No body cares about your life story shorty.
Where I can buy this a slide board? Thank you for answer
This is a brrrn board. Just Google brrrn slide boards.
never tape your ankle's, your knees will hurt years later and you end up pulling your groin more
Was it 175 degrees Celsius?
No, stick with 175 Fahrenheit. Celsius will definitely hurt the skates.
175 Fahrenheit
@@DuPrawPowerskating oh man… 😂 you guys should really switch to the international standards… like the metric system… 🤪 Don’t give up become a German like me and learn the metric system 😂😂😂
175℉ is 80℃.
@@FritzHunter01 well when it comes to cooking its Fahrenheit, so they did it right like the metric system.
Excellent video, thank you!
My pleasure and thanks for watching!
Thank you coach! I’m learning how to skate again I snapped my leg tib fib break when I was 17-18 now I’m 27 getting on the ice got a Bauer slide board from christmas and it’s helping me develop good habits great video!
Man you are very welcome! The passion for hockey never leaves you and skating as well. It feeds your soul, so glad you are getting back to it!! Coach Ryan
Everytime a clip of the slide board being used they are all doing this odd kick at the end. The slide board is so gimmicky
Can/Would you bake Bauer X-LP’s?
I wouldn’t. Most hockey shops said no because it would damage the structural integrity of the skates.
Good vid. I've been playing hockey for almost 50 years. Stopped here and there when the kids were young or starting a career. Technology has changed. I had those plastic Micron skates when I was around 10 or 12. Those were hard to tie effectively! Zero flex. I tie my skates similar to what you showed. I use wax laces and find the bottom few holes don't move much and if they are too tight, my toes go numb. I have 10 holes in my skates. I barely touch the bottom 3. Then I tighten the next 3 a bit, leaving some flex. Then the next 2 get a bit of a snug so they aren't loose but I can move them, just like you showed. I concentrate on the top two holes. I always always always do a double under to keep them from slipping! I keep the top two snug but not too tight. After all the years of pucks off the ankle and shin, too many bruises to aggravate and I don't want lace bite (had that too many times). I also use gel pads on the inside of my ankles. I use very short, thin socks, keeping any seams away from my ankles to avoid irritation. I also find a sock seam by my toes will cause them to go numb or hurt! I usually find after about 30 - 40 minutes of beer league or drop-in hockey, I retie the top two or three holes, just a bit to keep my ankles supported. I'm going to experiment with the lace from the outside rather than the inside. Good tip!
I just got one for Xmas so I'm new to this and I'm a hockey player
Nice vid 👍🔥 +1 sub
Tips😏
Music is too loud.
Constructive comment here bud: Your back-ground music is way too loud and competing with your voice. It's you we want hear, not music. Thanks for the video.
If you have wide feet and like Bauer...buy the Supreme M5s
Was really hoping for actual zamboni and ice chat. This should be called “arena etiquette with the rink rats”
I have been looking for the answer for my foot numbness/cramping all over the internet and found this. Thank you for helping me solve a huge problem. Can't wait to skate this weekend!
My pleasure! Have a great skate this weekend!
This looks fun. Im thinking about buying one.
Thanks for sharing… super helpful!
You are so welcome!
