It was essential that they could trust us to create a unique and lasting piece which reflected Fr. Dolan’s Irish roots and his commitment as to spreading the word of the Gospels. To that end we were inspired by so...

    ‘Every day is a school day’ so they say. A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of attending a portrait sculpture masterclass organised by the @societyofportraitsculptors, held at the Heatherley School of Arts in London. The classes were tutored by professional sculptor, Marcus Cornish who demonstrated his techniques and approach to constructing the essential forms and structures which underpin an accurate likeness of the sitter. Marcus punctuated his practical guidance with contextual displays and examples from other sculptors. Seeing how past masters had approached the characterisation of their models really opened my eyes to the possibilities searching for something more than just a ‘likeness’. The classes provided a great opportunity to work alongside a diverse group of fellow artists who are striving to improve their skills too. @marcuscornishsculptor @lifedrawingchannel @heatherley_school_of_art #portrait #portraitsculptureworkshop #portraitsculptures #portraitbust #waxportrait #sculpturemasterclass #stephencharnock #london #heatherley_school_of_art #marcuscornish

    You are very good in capturing a likeness. I created a bust many years ago, and now I would like to create a mold and a plaster copy so that I can send it to the family of the subject who had posed. It looks like him. But I don't want to harm the original in any way. I'm looking into the brush on method....but I realize it would also have to have a strong outer covering. Do you recommend rubber or silicone?

      Hi Maria, You will need to find a supplier of RTV Silicone (Room Temperature Vulcanising)

    Cool video thanks for posting.. i see you put a piece of cardboard to stop the crucible from sticking to the plinth both in and out of the furnace... can you tell me your procedure for that in any detail?... do you put several layers of cardboard at start up of furnace or ... over the course of the heat?.. so you have any insight from experience that youl'd be willing to share?.. am interested in eventually going to cast iron, have seen some say cardboard works great... and seen some say it doesn't. Additionally did you preheat the ceramic shells in this case... then set them in the barrel and cover with sand to insulate and stabilize for pooring ... or are they roughly room temperature in the sand box?... thanks for your input if you are able to share.

      @Scartworks Před 6 lety

      Hi Jim, I'm pouring bronze so I cant advise about best practice for cast iron. We put 1 layer of card in furnace every time the crucible goes in - this makes a layer of ash that stops the crucible sticking to the pedestal. And also 1 piece on the concrete plinth you can see in the video when we transfer the crucible from tongs to pouring iron. We also pre-heat the shells to a dull red temperature (550 degrees C)then put them in dry paving sand. The sand helps keep the temperature in the shells prior to pouring + it also will stop leaks if the shell has any cracks.

      beautiful... exactly what one would think... sand stabilizes and insulates the shells... that cardboard / ash topic is a pretty good topic it seems... Thanks very much for your response... and for providing the video... hope you guys are doing great.
