Do cats actually know what they look like though? It's not like cats carry around a mirror and most animals don't realise they are looking at themselves if they do look into a mirror. The primary way a cat identifies another cat is probable smell. That's the first thing the cat does is smell it. If it had smelled a cat it would have probably reacted aggressively. So it knows it's not a cat through smell.
