    @John thank you for explaining the concern about a peer sending unadvertised traffic, like pointing their default at me. I had wondered about how that is handled. This sounds like another great selling point for an IXP, because the IXP keeps an eye on peering traffic. Any idea how much latency the process of watching the traffic adds, compared to direct peering outside of an IXP (all other things like distance being equal)?

    • @thomascroghan9255
      @thomascroghan9255 Před rokem

      With everything being in hardware switching wise. Less than a millisecond. At that level your talking about the length of the fiber being slightly longer in most cases. While it's a concern if your high frequency stock trading, the rest of us would benefit more greatly from the monitoring than the slight delay that might be introduced with going through a switch instead of a direct cross connect.

    About internet history in Latvia you are about spot on. I remember childhood, (around >2000s) when on of my friends got PC and internet. At that time all local ISPs had twisted pair runs, from building to building as you mentioned. At that time I believe they where using RouterOS, but on regular PCs converted to routers, as routerboards was not yet made at the time of deployment, or requirements was not met (no CCRs at that time). Stability was sometimes not that great, and thunderstorms burned many customer and ISPs equipment NICs, but local network speeds was whit out limits. So DC++, emule downloaded movies and games really fast, if peers was in local ISP network. There where even specific ISP hubs in DC++, just for that ISP users, so you can get full fast ethernet speeds. Also, at one point, public internet speed was raised x2 at night. Dunno why and how. We had and still have DSL, but there is only one provider (at least that matters and still is in operation), our biggest country wide telecommunication company that is now called Tet. Before it was called Lattelecom. As they had country wide telephone lines (not sure about type they use) they could implement DSL.

    • @thomascroghan9255
      @thomascroghan9255 Před rokem

      Well it somewhat depends on the use case. If you're looking for BGP performance, the rb4011 and 5009 will always be faster at handling BGP updates then the 1009 even with ROS v7. That said, you can pull off a lot with the CCR 1009s that's just crazy. Terminating large numbers of pppoe tunnels or other highly "scale-able" tasks is really impressive especially on the 1036. TBH if you're unsure it might be better to reach out to a Mikrotik trainer/consultant to get some general knowledge and guidance for your specific use case.

    As an Australian residential ISP (not WISP) that has been looking for a Wifi Mesh solution to sell to my customers Vilo certainly has my attention. My requirements are to be able to pre-configure the Wifi Mesh before being sent to the customer site (plug and play for customer), Bridge AP Mode, Wireless AND Ethernet backhaul between meshs, and NO cloud based system for them to work (will still function if the cloud goes offline). I have bought and tested D-Link COVR, TP-Link Deco, and Tenda Nova and only one of them met my requirements but it had massive Wifi stability issues (dropouts) so that was a no go. If the Vilo product(s) become available in Australia (probably need to go through tedious regulatory approval) then I will certainly be giving them a go. Both Amie and Man seem very talented and motivated and I wish them all the best!
