Pink Pottery Glaze Ideas

So were all these colours using the regular studio white that contains 10% zircon? With stains I typically reduce the amount of zirccon from a base white. And have you tried studio white as a clear by removing the zircon? It just sounds like a really good base glaze! Really appreciating your videos!
Yes it's the same studio white, and that's a great idea. Next time I mix a batch I'll separate out some before I put in the Ultrox and do some tests. I am sure you're right, that much opacifier is too strong for some of those light stains. There's probably a balance for each stain.

Good video, you have inspired me to make some of my own glazes. Can you recommend any you particularly like that I may find on Glazy? I have the white recipe ready to go and will mix the shell pink, too. Thank you!
If you're already mixing the white glaze, you can just portion out a little of that one to try with the shell pink stain (mason stain #6000.) I have a video on that here: czcams.com/video/dUfAWCgLwmg/video.html The glaze that works very well with mason stains is: glazy.org/recipes/18705

Great video - love discovering new glazes! How much water did you add after the initial 3200ml to get the right consistency (or what Specific Gravity was it)?
Since I mix studio white a lot, I usually do that by eye, looking for a more milk like consistency if I am planning to dip, or heavy cream if I'll be doing more brushing. Heavy cream more like SG 150, milk could be anywhere from 135-145 and give good results. All of those numbers work to give a good base glaze, so I spend less time measuring knowing it's not as sensitive about thickness as some glazes.

@@David-uv7hz I have a video on that here: czcams.com/video/dUfAWCgLwmg/video.html In short, it works the best with strong stains, best black gives it a nice gray, canary yellow is nice. Hansen 20x5 is a better recipe for adding stains, just not as great at playing nicely with commercial glazes.

My gosh the amount of glazes and combos you use is crazy and the fact that you member them is amazing!! I have a pretty big kiln so it takes a while to fill my kiln so I can’t remember most of what I have once I load the kiln. I make an index card for each pot. Beautiful pots, as always and thank you so much for sharing with us.

I like them all. Your video brought back fond memories. I haven't done pottery since my art grad school days in the 1970's. I loved the days when we unloaded the kilns after glaze firing. Often the results were surprising, mostly great, occasionally disappointing, but always interesting. We each had to create our own glaze as part of the course. In an electric kiln, mine turned out as a matte grayish tan with a few darker speckles that worked well with a variety of colored slips. In a gas kiln, it was a glossy warm speckled golden medium brown. My prof asked if I would give permission for him to use it as one of the standard class glazes that anyone could use. I did. I'm sure I have my formula here somewhere because I rarely throw anything out. Someone will probably find it and toss it when I kick the glaze bucket.
You should put the recipe up on glazy.org, you can name it after yourself and then it will live on!
I took a 4 hour afternoon workshop on making glazes. They said to wait 24 hours before using the glaze. OHHHH- your glaze was pre-made. The only thing you are adding is stain so perhaps it will look the same when using asap vs waiting 24 hours? I just found your channel and love it! Can’t wait to watch more and learn along with you!
I have heard that about glazes as well. I have mixed hundreds and used them directly after and have seen no difference between that and the same glaze used a week later. I think if you're mixing well with an immersion blender perhaps it makes less of a difference. I am sure at some point I'll find a glaze that needs to sit and wait... but so far it's not worth the extra time in waiting. I am a bit of a rule breaker though, lol.
I live in Ecuador and am somewhat limited in glaze availability. What could I substitute for the running chowder?
I haven't found a good substitute yet. I am going to try a test with Lynette Opal from glazy.org. I'll do an update if I do find anything that behaves like that glaze.

Running Hot Chowder is super thin so I leave the jar lid off on the shelf for a week for some liquid to evaluate and it works so much better now.

Beautiful glaze results. For the refire- teapot and vase. I'm wondering if you painted a solution of CMC over the glaze, that it may help with the glaze to adhere better. I'm a newbie and only just watched a video about the CMC. Just a thought and no expert at all. Happy potting
I haven't had a great amount of luck using cmc that way. Mayco stroke and coats have about the same adhesion without the extra work. But I really wanted the matte look of the original glaze. I may end up with stroke and coat in the end.

Hello from Australia 🇦🇺 I’m really enjoying your videos. I have a question, do you wipe the bottoms, ie does the studio white stick to the kiln shelf? I run pottery classes and I think this glaze would be amazing.
Thank you for watching my videos! I do wipe my bottoms. I wax them, and then still wipe to make sure there are no little spots of glaze left on the part that touches the kiln shelf.
The one without running hot chowder looks like a photograph of tiny microscopic creatures, I think it's great! I definitely think the Floating Blue with the RHC is my favourite but they all look amazing

I've found that most of the Spectrum glazes are watery, to remedy it I take 3-4 granules of Epsom Salt and dissolve in 1/4 teaspoon of boiling water then (once cooled), I add to my Spectrum, and shake like the dickens, I've found that gives the best consistency for brushing. eta: I also use Spectrum 1511 Black as the base instead of Amaco Obsidian.

Awesome. If you are looking for a black glaze without stain (stains are so expensive) Licorice is great. It is on Glazy.
Hi, I have a question about when the glaze dries on the piece isnt it chalky and easy to peel or destroy while manipulating and brush stroking commercial glazes? Im just curious as I dont have my own kiln yet and have to travel with my glazed pieces so thats why I use only liquid commercial glazes. Thank you!
No, it isn't too chalky. I do know what you mean, there are some glazes that seem to just powder off of the bisque dish. Some glazes with a heavy clay base will occasionally crack. Amaco Oatmeal is one that might be hard to transport. The ones I mentioned in the video would be fine.

You can do it! Even starting small with a good white glaze can save a lot of money.
Running hot chowder is always very thin and runny. About a 3/4 inch around a rim will run 3 to four inches on the side of a mug

Yeah, I feel like the greenish glazes I used really went more blue in the combo. I'll have to try it with some others and see if I can get a true green.
I have used textured chowder but the running hot chowder is spectacular!! These look like the “cells” one gets with the “dirty pours” in acrylics using silicone drops. WOW. Thanks so much!
