    Back around 1970, I worked at Buck Knives in El Cajon, California, assembling the 110. I will describe the absolute most dangerous way to close a 110…. Hold the open knife, point towards you sharp edge of the blade up, try to hold the back of the blade only… while holding firmly, sharply rap the blade release notch on the hard edge of a table … the rap will depress and release the locked blade partially rotating it closed … carefully close the blade until safe and place in sheath. Disclaimer- table and fingers have been severely damaged using this method, this method should only be attempted by a licensed, certified, and insured professional. Under no circumstances should anyone attempt this procedure unless within the confines of a hospital emergency room. Never attempt while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, never attempt while sane or insane, or awake or asleep. I only attempted this procedure BEFORE the blade was sharpened. Additional Information - be warned-- not every Buck Knife can be folded to a closed position… they also produce some very fine ridged, non-folding knives. Great body injuries may occur if you attempt to fold these non-folding knives. Buck Knives also offers an excellent warranty on each and every knife encase you snap a blade while attempting to fold a non folding knife, non folding knives come with a sheath for a reason.

      If your walk is more than 5 km’s, you will need to write down on paper that you have traveled 5 km’s. A set of pace beads will measure 5000 meters. So then you start over and measuring another 5 km’s. Record another 5km and repeat.

    Do you think storing knives in a leather sheath causes them to rust?

    • @clivedunning4317
      @clivedunning4317 Před rokem

      Dear Big Cheese , I just read what you said in your post. My advice would be to double check that your leather sheath has dried out completely when you return home after a trip. A lot of folk clean, dry and oil their knives then put them away in the sheath , which may not have dried out completely. A sheath can look dry on the outside but the inside (which you can't visually check) might still be damp. If the knife is stored in a damp sheath like this it will obviously begin to rust. My best advise to you is ; 1. If laying away a knife for what you know is going to be a long time, store the knife seperately from the leather sheath, if the knife is a Mora with a plastic sheath or a kydex one stuff the sheath with old dry newspaper to dry it out. 2. Always lightly oil a knife before putting it away. Liberally coat your knife with Vaseline if storing it for a long time or if you live near saltwater or in a area of high humidity. 3. Check on any stored blades as often as you can and periodically refresh the Vaseline. Any signs of corrosion, tackle it immediately. Hope these words of advice help you and your knives.

      @@clivedunning4317any tips on how try dry out the knside of the sheath?

    • @clivedunning4317
      @clivedunning4317 Před 11 měsíci

      @@jasonedwardledburynewzeala9897 Dear Jason , if the sheath is plastic all you need to do is stuff clean dry rags into the sheath, if you do this a couple of times that should dry out the plastic sheath , dry newspaper, or similar, will work too. If a leather sheath the drying process can be a bit more time consuming. Obviously wipe the sheath with a cloth if it is absolutely saturated, say, having fallen into the sea or a river, then put into a warmish place , wraped in old newspapers, make sure you use a gentle warm like an old fashioned airing cupboard. A fierce heat (holding it over open flame for example) will damage or harden the leather. Once the leather sheath has started to dry out pack it with clean rags , pushed down into the sheath, leave a excess piece of rag at the top so that you can pull the rag out. Again, keeping it in the warmth after you have done this will assist the drying out process. There are leather treatment oils and lotions you can apply to the leather sheath when it is in a dry condition that keep the leather supple and which have an element of "water proofing". If home, in base camp and not going out into the wilds try and store your knife and sheath separately but next to one another. Always have a tube/tub of Vaseline with you so that you can coat your knifeblade whenever needed. This will protect your blade in the event of having the need to place your knife into a leather sheath that is not fully dried out , when you have to take your knife with you for urgent reasons. Hope this helps , don't know the names of brands of leather treatments that you might have in New Zealand but I'm sure a quick internet search will find something for you in your locality. Any more questions don't hesitate to contact me.
