Grand Rounds: May the Forest Be with You: Relational Forest Therapy Group Medical Visits w Dr. Cheng
Stephanie Cheng, MD, is a palliative care physician with a longstanding commitment to integrative medicine. She currently works at the UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center, providing supportive care for patients with cancer, as well as the Osher Center where she facilitates group medical visits. Dr. Cheng has a special interest in holistic management of symptoms and improving quality of life through integrative approaches. Dr. Cheng co-created innovative group medical visits that pair psycho-oncology and integrative palliative care for patients with advanced cancer. As a nature and forest therapy guide, she also pioneered a virtual nature therapy group medical visit program. She also offers a group on self-compassion and will be offering future group visits on qigong and narrative medicine.
Dr. Cheng has a longstanding meditation practice and has completed trainings in chaplaincy (through the Sati Center for Buddhist Studies), mind-body medicine (through the Center for Mind Body Medicine), Awakening Joy (with meditation teacher James Baraz), and self-compassion (through the Center for Mindful Self-Compassion). She also completed a two-year program focused on illness, aging, death, and compassionate action from a contemplative perspective through Spirit Rock Insight Meditation Center and the Metta Institute. Dr. Cheng has a background in anthropology, earned her medical degree at Oregon Health & Science University, then completed a family medicine residency at Contra Costa Regional Medical Center, followed by a fellowship in hospice and palliative medicine, with an integrative medicine focus, at George Washington University. She is passionate about planetary health and serves as a faculty affiliate at the University of California Center for Climate, Health, and Equity. She also serves as the Vice Chair of the Nature & Health Special Interest Group of the Academic Consortium for Integrative Medicine and Health.
At the end of this activity learners will be able to:
1. Describe the history of forest therapy.
2. List three health benefits of forest therapy.
3. Explain the concept of group medical visits and their role in facilitating relational forest therapy experiences for patients.

Can you remedy this situation?

    Having just viewed your short anniversary video I was shocked and disappointed to find no mention of the MBSR classes that have changed my life. I took the course with James Mitchell several years ago and have continued with him through his MBSR Alumni Sits. I can't speak to the other practitioners but I can only express how grateful I am to have discovered James and his wise, unsentimental, compassionate and scientific approach to meditation. That the MBSR program isn't foregrounded in your video is a lost opportunity to spread the word about this effective tool for facing the difficult issues in one's life.

    I have watched anything Dr lustig does and I bought his book. Results are that my triglycerides were 390 one year ago but today they are 151 aka normal. I gave up all processed foods and sugar ….except one dessert on Sunday evenings . I lost 30 pounds without even thinking about weight loss I was 152 pounds down to 122 pounds. I am 76 years old and now I exercise 20 minutes at3.5 mph on my treadmill 7 days a week. When I started I was only able to walk 5 minutes at very low speed for approximately2 weeks Before I started following dr lustig i was unable to get out of my chair or bed. I have never felt better in my life. Unfortunately my LDL is still high maybe because I do a high fat low carb diet ? But I’m still experimenting and feeling so healthy that I’m not really concerned. My Johns Hopkins trained dr was insisting I take statins but thanks to my finding dr Lustig I was able to reverse my pre diabetes by following his videos and believing his impeccable logic. Dr lustig has been a crusader for the past 20+ years and we are all lucky to be exposed to this genius of a human being. I only wish he would be given some national medical establishment accolades for his untiring work for humanity

    If taking supplements are not effective, where are we getting the micronutrients from? Farming techniques have depleted them and just because a whole food claims to be organic doesn't guarantee the nutrients are in there either. Taking supplements doesn't replace eating a healthy diet and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. I think I have listened to almost everyone of Dr. Lustig's podcast and have read his book Metabolical. As a chiropractor for almost 40 years, I've been taking supplements since high school in 1968. I can't remember the last time I was sick other than a little dose of Covid-19.

    In my own arrogant opinion (take it with a grain of salt the size of a Buick) Dr. Lustig's Metabolic Matrix at 30:47 can be completely satisfied by going carnivore. That's my plan after I complete the next few months of extended fasting to get rid of four years of accumulated fat and metabolic crud (I gained 50 pounds after going off Keto in 2020).

  • @r0cketplumber
    @r0cketplumber Před 9 měsíci

    I think this may be the most important point, at 11:48 *1 Food science is what happens to food between the ground and the mouth.* *2 Nutrition is what happens to food between the mouth and the cell.* *3 Metabolic health is what happens inside the cell.* *But it's only what happens inside the cell that leads to all of the diseases of metabolic syndrome. All the diseases that are driving those health care costs, type two diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, cardiovascular disease, cancer, dementia, fatty liver disease, polycystic ovarian disease, all of those are the diseases of mitochondrial function.* *And that's why everyone has cardio-metabolic diseases is because they have mitochondrial dysfunction and that is what metabolic health is all about.* You get your mitochondria from your mother, and everyone knows if momma ain't happy, nobody's happy. Take care of your mitochondria and they'll take care of you.
