Music Theory and The Fretboard
United States
Registrace 28. 08. 2013
Hey! ...Chris here.
When I took piano lessons at 14 years old, my teacher had a jazz background and gave me a learning path that was built on understanding harmony. So I quickly learned a lot of theory and memorized all of my major/minor triads, major/minor/dominant 7ths, and scales in all keys. His teaching method focused on the "Pareto principle" where you don't need to know everything right away to begin making music. Yes, you can maximize personal progress without overwhelming yourself!
When I taught myself the guitar in college, I learned songs by using tab and listening to CDs. I found that it's a very difficult instrument to understand even though I could easily play a lot of stuff! At this time, I already knew a lot of theory and so I only needed to learn how to apply it to the guitar. I co-wrote a guitar theory book based on the "Pareto principle". It's called "Music Theory and The Fretboard". My channel will have audio/visual demonstrations of the concepts in the book.

Guitar Tone: making sense of EQ to create a metal tone - approximating Metallica's Master of Puppets

EQ can be hard to understand. At least that's how I've felt for a very long time! I wanted to create some videos that shed some light on the process of crafting the sound that you like. In this video, we explore the sound of "scooped mids". CAGED Part 2: the major scale and scale degrees - quick fretboard theory
zhlédnutí 40Před měsícem
In this video, we create a "palette of notes" from which we can create music! We use the "Major Scale formula" to find which notes go on our palette. With these 7 notes, we can create a lot of fun melodies and chord progressions. Then we learn what scale degrees are. In the next video, we'll build chords from each scale degree and discuss how they differ from "chord degrees". FREE COURSE: class...

I will define "octave" in the next video. Can you hear how the high note and the low note sound like they "just fit"? I'm keeping the videos short in case you have questions that pertain to this very topic! These 4 chords are from the song "Zombie" by The Cranberries. I teach this as the first song because the chords are 2-finger chords (and one 1-finger chord at the end). So it's very easy to play. I have found that my students can play the very first exercise on the first day!

Zombie Play-a-long With a Metronome and Chords at 100% Speed
zhlédnutí 21Před 2 měsíci
Feel free to try any strumming pattern that you've learned so far! The metronome is added to help stay on the beat! :) This is the first strumming song of my 8 week beginner guitar curriculum. The reason why I start with this song is because the chords are all 2-finger chords: Em, CMaj7, and G6. In fact, the very last chord is a simple 1-finger chord: G6/F# (I call this the "Zombie" chord). Whe...
Zombie Play-a-long (LEVEL 1 strumming pattern) With a Metronome and Chords but No Guitar
zhlédnutí 16Před 2 měsíci
This is a backing track where YOU play the guitar part! Level 1 strumming pattern is two quarter note strums. During the 2 beats of rest, switch or move to the next chord. The "level 1" strumming pattern is part of my 8 week beginner guitar curriculum. After just 8 weeks, you'll be strumming along to Hotel California (if you show up to class 4 times a week)!

For this song, you'll use the same chords you learned for "Zombie" by The Cranberries (except for the zombie chord). See: czcams.com/play/PLzVBXoy6gWm6CPtCGTDdrbXHsjO8N4UHz.html However, you MUST put a capo on the 7th fret of the guitar.

Very nice, Chris. 👏🏻
Thanks!
Hi man! I’m the guys from Reddit! I really love this, and appreciate you taking the time to make this! (Just wondering, what are the names of the chords?)
Yeah sure thing! They're not complete chords but instead "double stops". So it's just two note "dyads". Since they're only two notes each, I'll give you the notes (lowest note first). The first on is C-F. The original guitarist plays this double stop at the 10th fret of the D and G strings. Now because he always plays F, you can keep playing that note at that fret. The 2nd double stop is B-F where you move the lower note down just 1 fret to the 9th fret of the D string. The 3rd double stop is Bb-F. The final double stop is D-F. Does that help? I think playing it up on the 10th fret is a lot easier than how I did it - especially on an electric guitar.
@@Chris-MusicTheoryAndFretboard Thanks man! This helps a lot!
Awesome!
Thanks!
Wow!!! Just proves that you can learn at any age with the right teachers!
Thanks Frau Ann Marie!
first chord sounded like home pt.3 by current joys and then i look at the description and read that it was a current joys song, but a more known one lol

Nice bro I’m jazz guitar player and I’ve always to try upright looks so fun
Cool! How did you learn jazz? Upright is a lot of fun. Bowing is really hard though. I’m a huge fan of Xavier Foley.

That was really good man. But what's the deal with the by scruffpuppie?
Thanks. I think that's the original artist. I believe "Current Joys" is a band that covered the song, maybe? I just respond to various requests to transcribe stuff that come from random videos. I'm not familiar with these bands.
@@Chris-MusicTheoryAndFretboard Oh Current Joys created the song. Scruffpuppie covered it.
Smoothly man , thanks .....🙏🏾💥❤️

Ok, let me see what I can find. I will respond to your comment again later.
It’s kinda hard to explain but for the the first part of the chorus it’s E1 E4 A3 A3 E4 E0 E1
Hey man any chance I could give you requests? It’s rare to find people that cover rare songs that actually post a good view of their hand.
Sure! What would you like?

You're welcome! I noticed that my high E string is actually quite sharp. I should have tuned before I made the video.
