Age 87, born 09/24/34, KARL WELDON HESS, MD, died on Sunday April 17, 2022 surrounded by love. In addition to his wife of almost 66 years, he is survived by his daughters Gretchen of Shaker Heights and her sons, Hal and Owen Tafe; Kristen Hess of Boston, her sons Cole and Cameron Jilek; and Megan Bennett of Shaker Heights, her husband Thomas and their daughter Eliza and son Mason. He is survived also by three brothers: Dr. Dale (Bette) of Portland, OR; Dr. Mark (Carol) of Portland, OR; and Dr. John (Gina) of Warrensburg, MO. After graduating from Wheaton College (IL) in 1956, Karl Hess received an M.A. in biochemistry at Harvard University in 1957, and then entered the Tufts University School of Medicine Class of 1961. A residency at Metro brought him to Cleveland. From 1964-1966 he served as a Captain in the Air Force on the island of Bermuda, where he was the only pediatrician. Returning to Cleveland, he enjoyed a 34-year career as a pediatrician at Kaiser Permanente where he helped initiate a computerized record system. During those years, he also held staff appointments at University Hospital, St. Luke's, and Cleveland Clinic with a teaching appointment at Case Western Reserve University's School of Medicine. He served on the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on School Health. Through the Institute of Cultural Affairs, he went to Egypt, India, and Kenya to support rural development. Over four decades he had a strong belief in development and women's equality and made visits to Uganda, Benin and Ethiopia with The Hunger Project, an organization which empowers African women to develop farms and other business projects. A lifetime love of hiking and camping sent him and his family west with special fondness for the Tetons. Music has been another lifelong enthusiasm from childhood piano and trombone through current support of the baroque orchestra Apollo's Fire. Local civic involvements have included The Shaker Schools Plan and Docs for Health, a support group for the Affordable Care Act. Since retirement, he has worked on the issue of lead poisoning and its effects on impoverished children. Dr. Hess has been an active member of Fairmount Presbyterian Church, where a memorial service will be held later this summer. Strawberry Festival! Presbyterians celebrating graduating high school seniors, celebrating cessation/transition/vaccination of the pandemic, celebrating God’s good works, celebrating our community reconnecting, like cicadas after a 17 month hibernation, celebrating strawberries, cake and ice cream, celebrating children of all ages cheering for the Rocket Car, celebrating the Lord’s suppe together once more. What a beautiful exploration of comparison between the story of Holy Week and the delights and explorations of raising new life from our love of each other. From conception, to carrying a child, to birth, and raising that child to and through adulthood, the metaphor of Christ's story for all of human life is intractable, and Kate's story shows this so well.
