Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site
Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site is in Illinois just across the river from Saint Louis, Missouri. It is the site of a pre-Columbian Native American city dating back to over 1000 years CE and is the largest settlement of Mississippian culture.
There are around 120 earthworks, including Monks Mound, which is the largest earthwork in the Americas.
At its height, 15,000-20,000 people inhabited the site. It was an important trade hub and gathering site.
This site was amazing. I visited there at the height of the cicada emergence and you can hear them plainly in the video.

Buffalo Trace Revisited
zhlédnutí 11Před 19 hodinami
I returned to Buffalo Trace because it has changed so much since I was there when I recorded my previous video. When I was there before, everything was still dead from winter. Now, the plants are growing and flowers are blooming. This is really an amazing park and, along with Meadowbrook, has become one of my favorite places to go to take a walk. If you ever get out here, check it out, I think ...
Sun Trail Friends Creek Conservation Area
zhlédnutí 11Před 14 dny
I returned to Friends Creek Conservation Area where I hiked the Sun Trail. I thought I was going to be disappointed by this trail, but I was pleasantly surprised. The trail wandered through fields and woods. The view at the overlook wasn't anything worth mentioning, but the trail to it was really pretty nice. The hike ended with a small suspension bridge over Friends Creek. All in all this was ...
Meadowbrook Park Revisited

I returned to Meadowbrook Park outside Urbana, Illinois. My previous visit was in late March. This was four months later at the end of July. The difference between the two visits was amazing. Nothing had really started growing previously. This time, it seems like everything was growing. This video is different from most of my videos. There are long cuts, some of the longest I've done, with litt...
Kickapoo State Park - North Riverview Trail
zhlédnutí 25Před 28 dny
While visiting Kickapoo State Park in Illinois, I hiked the North Riverview Trail. This is right across the road from the South Riverview Trail and is longer, with better views. It was a much more enjoyable hike. There is a concession area at the entrance to the southern parking area.
Meadowbrook Park
zhlédnutí 9Před měsícem
Earlier this year I visited Meadowbrook Park just outside Ubana, Illinois. This park showcases the prairie that used to cover much of Illinois. I went in the spring before the new growth really came in. I want to return and do a comparison now that the flowers are in bloom.
Kickapoo State Park South Riverview Trail
zhlédnutí 27Před měsícem
I visited Kickapoo State Park earlier this year and hiked a couple of trails. This is the South Riverview Trail. It isn't that long, and neither is this video. It climbs up from the road and follows a ridge overlooking the Middle Fork of the Vermillion River before dropping back to the road.
Turkey Run East Trails
zhlédnutí 45Před měsícem
I went back to Turkey Run and hiked some of the trails to the east of the suspension bridge. This section of the park is much less traveled than the western, more scenic part. I also took a side trip to the Lusk homestead and the site of the old mill. This was a very nice hike, even if it wasn't terribly scenic.
Rim Rock Trail

I took a short hike on the Rim Rock Trail in Shawnee National Forest. This trail stayed along the rim of the canyon. There was another trail the appeared to descend to the river, but I did not take it. It was hot, and somewhat muggy, so we opted for the shorter route that required less exertion. This trail was nice. It was a stone path with a small section that was a wooden platform. The second...

North Fork Trail is a 9.6 mile trail in De Witt, Illinois. The trail is well marked with parking at the north and south trailheads. Bathroom facilities are located at the south trailhead. The trail is mostly wooded, though there is a nice section that runs through open areas along the powerlines and a short section of road walk at both the north and south trailheads.

Friends Creek Conservation Area in Argenta, Illinois has three trails and a campground. The woodland trail is 1.1 miles long and after leaving the field, meanders through the woods. It is a nice trail and was mostly dry, even after a pretty heavy rain the night before. It is well marked and has no steep climbs or descents.

Spring Brook Trail in Rock Bridge Memorial State Park in Missouri is a 3.1 mile loop that follows a river and crosses a streambed. Terry and I decided to hike it while I was working out there. The water was up and we could not cross without getting our feet wet. Had the weather been a little warmer, I probably would have tried it. In the end, we hiked about half the trail before having to turn ...

Shades State Park Trail 5 is rated moderate to rugged. It is about a mile long with an elevation gain of about 187 feet. It is similar to the trails in it is next to. I descended the valley and returned up the ridge. At the time I hiked it, it was fairly muddy, but was a pretty easy hike. Bathrooms and the parking lot are near the trailhead.

    • @chrislist7456
      @chrislist7456 Před 4 lety

I was thinking about this while hiking this section of trail. I mostly agree. I think a better route would be to follow the trail north out of Dexter and pick up the Waterloo Pinckney-Trail and follow that. I think, though, that what they're trying to do is connect communities with this section of the trail. If they did used the Waterloo-Pinckney trail, they'd bypass Chelsea and Stockbridge. I'm guessing the major investment in the foot/bike path between them plays a part in the routing. There may also be some jurisdictional issues. If there is an organization responsible for the Waterloo-Pinckney Trail, they may not want to cede/share authority with the people running the Iron Belle Trail. I don't know how it works north of Homer once it meets up with the NCT.
