The ICMA Conference in San Antonio was a great experience, outstanding content, exhibition hall, activities all around, great networking and educational opportunities. Added bonus was getting to catch up with former team mates from the past and catch up with Lee Feldman, Jon Lewis, Jason Yarborough, Brad Johnson, John Coffey and Lyle Sumek.

ICMA recently launched a Student Chapter program to do just that (icma.org/studentchapter) - increase participation with MPA/MPP programs and improve the dialogue between the profession and academia. This will help us connect managers to students more easily, and raise awareness of the profession as a career option as well. This segment is spot on! It is imperative for ICMA and our members to work with MPA/MPP programs to educate those who educate our future peers that facilitation skills are as essential as finance, general management, and public works courses. A succinct and convincing analysis of why the property tax has contradictory impacts on community revitalization efforts. For three decades of efforts to improve neighborhoods the organizations I worked with were constantly battling land speculators for access to land parcels at affordable prices. Ideally, cities and towns ought to eliminate the tax on buildings altogether, requiring landowners to pay something close to the full annual rental value of land.

Great video. Hit all the prime points that Land Value Taxation and untaxing buildings can do: 1. Clears up vacant dowtown sites 2. Stop sprawl into the suburbs. 3. Promotes rapid-transit 4. Funds rapid-transit 5. Enables affordable housing 6. Curbs speculation 7.
