Britio happens to be a Sri Lankan family name (surname) like Fernando, Perera, Pereira, de Silva, Silva, Fonseka, de Fonseka, Pinto, Baptist, Almeida , de Almeida, Costa , de Costa, Correa , Corea, Cabral, Cabraal, Tissera, Thabrew , de Abrew etc that have it's Portuguese origin after Sri Lankan citizens living in the country who became Roman Catholic during the Portuguese Colonial time when the country was ruled by Portugal, took these Portuguese origin names as their last names in Sri Lanka. My last name Fonseka is one such Portuguese origin Sri Lankan Surname.

Hi @ruwanfonseka, we don’t have any relatives in Sri Lanka that we are aware of. But it’s possible that any family with the last name Brito in Sri Lanka, are related to my family. If we go back in time the history of the Brito last name is refers to people who came from Bretaña in Spanish or Brittany in English, a region located in northwest France. In medieval times, there was a large migration of Britos to the Iberian Peninsula, especially to Galicia and Portugal, so it is believed that the surname Brito has its origin in this migration. Later, it expanded to other regions of Spain and Latin America due to colonization and emigration. Portugal 🇵🇹, Spain 🇪🇸 and Brazil 🇧🇷 are the main countries with Brito last name. I’m from Dominican Republic 🇩🇴, we were colonised by Spain 🇪🇸 like you guys were colonised by Portugal 🇵🇹 for some time. I want to say that I’m very grateful that you bring this up because I did some research about our family name and for the first time I now know the history from where our family last name came from!! In Sri Lanka among the Sinhala Ethnic Community and Tamil Ethnic community who have Portuguese origin Sri Lankan last names like I do, have a high chance that they took those last names during the Portuguese Colonial times in Sri Lanka as a result of being Baptized as a Roman Catholic, and possibly the name given as the last name was actually the name of the God Father who was a Portuguese and had a Portuguese name. (the first Ancestor who converted from either Buddhism among the Sinhala community, or Hinduism among the Tamil Community to become a Roman Catholic, and thereafter the name got passed down the generations since the Portuguese Colonial times in Sri Lanka) . However among the Burger Ethnic Community in Sri Lanka those who have Portuguese origin last names are those who are mixed race possibly someone from their ancestors were men from Portugal who intermarried people from Sri Lanka and they took the father's Portuguese last name. Thought it might interest you, and possibly you might have already heard about some of this during your stay in Sri Lanka.
