Hi my name is Rick, and I welcome you to my Cape Cod life. I plan to retire in a few years and it is my hope to build up my little backyard into a hobby homestead. Each season I add more food systems. I have 8 hens as my eager partners in my small scale permaculture approach to food production. Also let me show you how I use resources unique to Cape Cod to supplement what I produce at home. I enjoy digging for clams, gathering oysters and going crabbing I would love to share that with you. I’ve been wanting cattle panel archways for the last few years. The problem was they are 16’ long and I only have a SUV., so getting them to my house was problematic. My friend such a blessing to live near the ocean. I adore my country life but to live near the ocean would be just so perfect. I just scared of the hurricanes. Seeing Galveston go through it over the yrs just isn’t the life for me lol I pray you are doing well my friend. Oodles of healing prayers and hugs
It is a blessing to live and raise my 2 children here. My daughter still lives here with her family and my son moved close to you, in Spring, Texas with his family! We do get hurricanes occasionally, but fortunately no major ones have hit us in a couple of decades. Then again with all the rain and tornadoes in your neck of the woods, that’s frightening too! Thank you for your prayers.

They are sweet with a sour skin. I make jelly with them, but you can make jam as well. I’m thinking of making some syrup this year, to flavor water or an interesting addition to a cocktail! 🍹 our friend Greg grows them.

I love these arches! Noodle beans aren’t my favorite beans to eat but they are so cool to grow! This is the first time I soaked my beans, but I had poor germination with my peas earlier this spring so I figure it was worth a shot. It’s my first time growing the painted serpent we will see if I get to them before the sneaky pickle worms attack. I am hoping get a ripe kajari this season, the one that ripened last year was enjoyed by a critter before I could harvest it. Thanks for stopping by my friend. ❤️

When are you planting your summer veg? My peppers are still very small but my tomatoes want in the ground now!
On the Cape it’s suggested planting them Memorial Day. I wait a week later for peppers, nights shouldn’t dip below 55°-60°F/13°-16°C for peppers . Patience.
I am presently hardening off cucumbers and squash. They’ve had 3 nights outside and seem to be doing well. They are going in the ground soon. I think you could direct sow them now, but I can’t recall what soil temperature they like to germinate. This is the first time I have started them indoors.

Your. garden is looking fantastic Rick. Much further along than mine. All my veggies are pretty stunted this year and I have no idea why. Sorry about the peas, that is one thing that is doing ok in my garden. Talk soon:)
Thank you Carol! Sorry to hear your veggies are stunted. I went through that last year with my starts. For me I discovered I didn’t set the timer correctly so the lights were on 24 hours a day for a month. Oops! I hope you figure it out!

Thanks Geoff. I like leafy greens, whether as a salad or cooked. They grow well here in the spring. I’m growing collards for the first time! The towers are useful to grow a lot of food in 2 square feet! It’s a good design and made in the USA.
