COMMEMORATIVE DRUMS, Episode 4
In this episode, I all but finish the first test shell (just needs some high polish, and then it's a wait for sample hardware) and get started on the second, this time it's featuring the interesting end grain.
If you're just tuning in for the first time, this is a big project, where I take a stack of heavy, solid-wood doors (not solid oak, for better or worse, despite what the veneers once SEEMED to suggest) from my old high school, which was recently torn down, and make them into new concert percussion drums for that same band program in their new building.
As ever, let me know your thoughts.
Cheers!

COMMEMORATIVE DRUMS, Episode 3
zhlédnutí 3,1KPřed 3 lety
The gaps in the original joinery under the veneers on the old doors is not pretty, but I think we're going to run with it for now. For the woodworkers and drum builders watching, I am as ever open to suggestions. For the next test drum, I'm going to try it end grain, which should eliminate issue of the gaps and bad original joints. THANKS FOR WATCHING!
COMMEMORATIVE DRUMS, Episode 2

Well, we're going for it. The wood under the veneer is not what I thought it would be, but there's a good chance the drums will be all the more interesting for it. In this episode, we cut the staves for the first drum the first test drum and glue up the shell blank.

I have no idea how this will turn out. The idea is to make beautiful, commemorative, concert drums from old doors (like, really old) out of my now demolished old high school, but I'm not sure the quality of the material will support the goal.... Special thanks to the Dover High School band program and district administration for making this project possible! (I mean, they saved the doors from f...
BLACKWOOD & BONE, Pt. 2
zhlédnutí 8KPřed 3 lety
This is not the originally intended use of these bones, but it's turning out to be a perfect opportunity to learn how to use them as a building material. If you've ever worked with bone before, I'd happily welcome tips and tricks. The stuff is very hard and very brittle. I'm hoping that I can reasonably prevent chip-out when I mill the shell this week. THANKS FOR WATCHING!

This one REALLY is the last video in the series. The drum is finally where I want it. It sounds great. It looks great. And I wish I could keep it. In this video, I run you through the final repairs and adjustments something that is consistently necessary when I'm doing something new or different, like a double inlay rering or an odd size shell or a new hoop design. Sorry about the audio clippin...

In preparation for cutting air vent inserts out of bone, well, I had to try it out first. The tolerances were really loose between the hole saw and the plug cutter, but that won't be a problem when the new bits come in for the blackwood shell.

I've been waiting for a long time to do this drum. A client of mine, with whom I've worked on several projects shared on this channel, found a big chunk of African blackwood for a pretty incredible price. You'll see for yourself, of course, that the wood is substantially (not quite fatally) flawed. It turns out there was just enough for the shell and, hopefully, enough material left in the offc...

I promised this would come out sometime over the weekend, and it is still the weekend, if barely. It took some doing to get these staves glued up, but I finally pulled it off. BUILDING FLOWER BOXES

Well, this isn't a drum. It is one of two flower boxes I built for my wife's birthday to put on our front porch. I ran out of a paint and wood filler, and getting anything from Home Depot is a pain in the neck right now, so the second one is still sitting in the garage. Next week, though, it's time for top soil and flowers, so, one way or another, they both need to be completed. If you're wonde...

This is as far as I can take the hoops until the custom heads come in. I'm glad I've found someone who's able to make calf-skin heads in custom sizes. It never ceased to amaze me how many mistakes still happen despite planning and care. I rarely do my own hoops, and I've never done them this way before. I suppose mistakes are inevitable. Just an Idea to pass on to you as a snare builder myself brother, And by the way, nice work from the minimal shop tool setup like most of us with our home garage shops, etc. So, @14:40 I would have liked to see Brass stock used and polished, then a few coats of clear automotive clear coat found at Home Depot in the paint area on the shelf with the other cans of paint, I have brass now over 8 years ago sealed with this clear coat that has not turned green, or reacted with the wood. Anyways just saying when you mentioned not caring for that look, I think you would be more liking of the brass stock used in place of the wood spacer or stand-off. Good to see all three of you involved in the build, good memories are being created there for sure with the young man. Cheers.

If you want to make a 14" drum, first you must find circumference. Multiply (pi) 3.14159 x (diameter)14 = 43.9823" Now you must divide (circumference) 43.9723 x the number of staves you want to use. Lets pretend you want 30 staves. Take 43.9723 ÷ 30 = 1.4657" wide staves. Now we must find our angle of bevel. We know that a full circle is 360 degrees. Take 360 degrees ÷ 30 staves =12 degrees. Each stave has two sides, so divide your bevel angle in half. So youll need 30 staves that are 1.4657" wide. And youll need to have your bevel set to 6 degrees.

You should switch to Evans heads, their hoops always fit the shells so much better. I’ve had shells that I thought weren’t evenly round and when I put an Evans head on I realized the shell was fine and the hoop was not even. Evans 360 sit perfectly flat on the shelf as well before and during the tuning process.
