One Man Rock and Roll Band - Roy Harper live cover
Played live at the West Malvern Social Club 27th April 2024, One Man Rock and Roll Band from the album Stormcock.
This is probably the signature song for a classic Roy Harper gig. Originally released on the album Stormcock, the song evolved over the years until by about 1990 it was a thundering beast of a thing, which I have attempted to recreate.

My version of One Man Rock & Roll Band by Roy Harper from my Stony Stratford gig in October - well, the middle to end of it anyway... Thanks to Pat Nicholson for the smoke machine, it really did make a HUGE difference!

Filmed live at York House, Stony Stratford on October 28th 2023 by Pat Nicholson and Lena. The video starts halfway through the song because I really messed up the beginning part - completely forgot the words - but I think I got it back in the second half. Roy Harper songs are pretty long, so plenty of time to stage a recovery! For more videos and info go to: jonpollard.co.uk/roy

Jon has great taste, because ol' Roy was the best! Nicely done!
Thanks, Roy is the best- and this is his best song. Have you seen my newer version here - czcams.com/video/XNuLB1QcsG0/video.html
Smashing it, thanks for keeping Roy's magic alive 👍
Thank you so much, it is an honour and a privilege to be able to sing these songs
As I always say, this is Roy Harper's best song along with One For All. You have done a brilliant cover, love it.
Thanks! I'm really glad I managed to get a decent performance recorded. It's such a great song, the guitar part is complete genius.
Very nice,i love this song ,you've done it proud 👏
Thanks! I love it too!
Where are you based? Where do you gig ?
I'm in the lovely county of Wiltshire. I don't do many gigs, a Roy Harper Tribute show is not an easy thing to gig with! When I do play it tends to be in the South of England or the Midlands. If you know of a venue that would be interested, I am always open to suggesitons!
I'm in Yorkshire so very unlikely I'd get to see you,I'm a drummer, I know HQ backwards,Bill bruford of course x
@@mikeh4441 there is an outside chance that I could do a Yorkshire gig, but it's quite a slim chance. I really don't know what happens next with this. It's a shame your not closer - we could do a band version of the game!
Having seen Roy Harper on both sides of the Atlantic and revisiting his albums every few years, it was with some trepidation that we headed cross country to see this Jon Pollard upstart. Wow! After only a few bars the years fell away and the memories flooded back. Though even Jon's quips were in the style of Roy he brought his own musical talent, vocal confidence and personality to this intimate gig and charming wee venue. Would have loved to hang back and chat, but with a long trip home, could only shake his hand, mumble my thanks and wonder at the impression he made on new converts and old fans he so charmed this evening. Roy must be so honored too.
Thank you for the lovely review - I love your description of me "this Jon Pollard upstart"! Attempting to perform a Roy gig and "be" Roy Harper for the evening is an incredibly scary thing to do. He is such a unique and incredible talent and the songs are SO difficult. Who am I to think I could do such a thing, just some upstart! Ultimately, it's about us all getting together and celebrating the man and his music. I am not Roy Harper, I'm just a fan. I'm glad you had a good time.
Nice!
Thank you! Cheers!
Hats off mate 👍
Thanks! Hats off to (Roy) Harper!
That was a well polished performance.
Thank you! The practicing must be paying off!
I love this song. Beautiful.
Thanks, I love this song too. I always thought Valentine was very close to Stormcock, I only realiseed recently that Lifemask came in-between!
I've been a Roy Harper fan for many years and saw him live loads of times. Only just discovered your covers but what i've seen so far is brilliant. Would love to hear this stuff live again so i'm going to try to get to your gig in May. I always loved seeing Roy doing One man.. and Burn the World back in the day when Jacqui was doing the sound and the noise from just one guitar was unbelievable.
Thank you for your kind words. You have hit the nail on the head, it was that sound that really got me when I first saw him live around the early 90s. I've been trying to recreate those sounds and I'm getting pretty close I think. It needs to be loud! I don't think there are any recordings that really do it justice, or maybe I haven't heard them in the right state of mind! I hope you can make it to the May gig - and you can see how close I get!
Hi Jon, thanks for the reply. Looking at your website today I see the date of the next gig is 27th April, not May as I thought yesterday. If that's the case I unfortunately can't make that one :-( Hope it goes well though and that you will be doing more in the future. If so, I'll try to get to the next one.
That's a great job! Thanks man!!!
Thank you for your lovely comment. I've been singing Roy Harper songs for many years now but only recently started to find an audience of Roy fans out there. Check out my website for gig details jonpollard.co.uk
@@jonpollardmusic Thanks Jon, I'll check it out. A suggestion : go out as a Roy tribute act; name yourself Boy Harper!
Boy Harper, that's not bad! It's a tricky thing to get right, I'm currently using "Jon Pollard sings Roy Harper", which is accurate but not very snappy. I might be a bit old to be a 'boy' though!
I found it!
This one went pretty well. Roy Harper songs are hard to perform, but I think I just about got it.
That was pretty much brilliant - now we'll be looking out for Me and My Woman
Thanks! My next gig is in Malvern April 27th, maybe that is near to you? I guess you could be anywhere in the world!
Just so happens I'm in Cheltenham - I'll try to be there @@jonpollardmusic
It would be great to see you there!
Very, very good. You've got Roy's timing down well.
Roy is such a phenomenal talent that it is hard to reproduce what he does. Plus he has a special magic all of his own...
Epic! In every sense of the word!
It's an epic song - but then most of Roy's songs are epic! They have such a depth and breadth that they make most songs seem shallow and insubstantial. It is such a pleasure to play these phenomenal songs to people who appreciate them.
again, nice.
Thanks - this is a difficult song to perform!
I saw Harper in the 70s in Bristiol. He sang Me and my woman with a more rock side to it, brilliant. We can we expect One For All? @@jonpollardmusic
It's tricky to plan a set of Roy Harper songs when they are all so long! 4 or 5 songs can take an hour to play, so it's generally a question of which songs do I cut.
Peter Gabriel......Jon!
These are the songs I play to people who are not Roy Harper fans!
It's 20 to 4, I've had a couple doobs and a couple of brews, and I'm singing along..... This sounds really 'full' Jon, such a gas.....
Thanks for the lovely feedback, this is one of my all time favourite songs to sing, maybe THE favourite. I sang it yesterday, doing a run through of my set for three next gig coming up in October. It's such a great song and it pushes me right to the edge of what I can do. Great fun!
Fast just like Les Cousins, I love your voice, I hope you have conversations with Bad Speech, you concentrated on the vocal....the multi tracking at the end...fair play,Jon, si, er, I mean Billy,, er, x.
I did go at it a bit quick, didn't I? At that point in the day I really didn't know if my voice was going to function at all, so it was a bit of a panic. I've spent a lot of time watching bad speech's videos, they are a great resource. My next job is to see if I can get more echo on the vocals and more effects on everything, really go to town!
Brilliant
Thanks!
Oh my word, I've just discovered this, it's amazing and I'm sure Uncle Roy would approve 🙏
Thanks, I sing these songs because I love them - and it's great to get your positive feedback. I hope Roy would approve!
I'm absolutely certain that he would, peace be with you my friend 🙏
Fucking brilliant.
I'm copying the master, hopefully I am a worthy student!
So good to hear Roy covers and to a high quality. Well done .
Wouldn't it be great if more people heard these great songs? I have a Roy Harper tribute gig booked in for October 28th near Milton Keynes - jonpollard.co.uk/news/roy-harper-tribute-gig I will be playing 2 x 45 minute sets of Roys music including all the songs on Stormcock.
Another fine performance. I was in England on the 7th, if i had known i would have come to watch you.
Thanks - that's a shame you were here and didn't know about it. Mostly I publicise stuff on Facebook, which seems to be where the local music news lives. This is my music page facebook.com/jonpollardmusic
Really good, Jon. i recall being in awe when I realised the original was two guitars. You really fill a great deal of that space, with just one guitar!
Thanks! The way the two guitars work together is a work of absolute genius - by two geniuses. I have studied this song a bit more since making that video and I think I've got it a bit more "accurate". The more you delve into his songs the more you find!
@@jonpollardmusic It's a firm favourite of mine as most aficionados of the canon may attest! Here, you really capture that solo guitar experience that seems to fill in so many gaps two guitars achieve. I hope that makes sense? I am only talking with lay persons ears appreciating the music, so I don't know the "academic" terminology! xx
I wondered where you got too, I look forward to your tribute show. great stuff.
Thanks! Most of the news goes on Facebook, you can see the gig details here: facebook.com/events/s/jon-pollard-stormcock-roy-harp/907033093638937/
Trying to wrk out how there’s only 202 views of this when I’ve viewed it more than that. Good work Jon.
Well thanks for the compliment. We live at the whim of the algorithm...
Cracking Jon , cheers Alan
Thanks! 🙂
The refrain, and rising vocals to, "Far across the universe...The goblins of the night..." never fails to make the hairs on my arm rise! Edit: Sorry, went back for a second listen! Just a beautiful song!
I had to tune the guitar down a couple of frets and change the key, I think I just about managed to pull out off. It's all about that "far across the universe" bit, what an amazing song
I presume, with my limited technical knowledge the use of loops helps layer this to the solo? Absolutely stunning!
That's right, loops, played live - no pre recorded backing tracks. Immense fun to play!
Superb!!!!
The tryuck is in the string bending!
Totally flawless! Beautiful rendition, Jon!
Thank you, it's a beautiful song.
Such a brilliant song, great to see it in your safe hands too!
That's my favourite Roy Harper song. I never get bored of playing it.
@@jonpollardmusic OMG, this has always been a privilege to see performed live. One of my officially favourite versions is the one recorded by I think Dave Burnham, when he set up a live gig in Brighton, circa 1992? I'd have to look in my library, but Nick played second guitar / lead - the crescendo at the end, amazing!
Wow! It might be a shorter version but it really does capture all the spirit of the very great, and in some ways, flawed uncut diamond, of a song! The effort you must put into learning these songs must be immense!
Thanks Adrian, I just love singing Roy Harper songs. There is nothing else like them and Burn the World is one of my absolute favourites. It really gets a lot out of an acoustic guitar.
What a really clever cover! Harmonica brilliant addition!
Luckily I bought the wrong harmonica years ago, couldn't use it for anything because it was in the wrong key. And then, hey presto, it works for sledgehammer!
Blooming brilliant!!! What a crescendo at the end!
It's a slow burn... In a world that demands instant gratification
Fabulous, Jon. Really fab!
Thanks! Now I've just got to find the right venue to do it in front of an audience
excellent
Thanks!
nice1 mate one of my faves to play and to listen to

Cheers Terry, will do!
nice
Thanks!
I typed in Roy Harper and followed the mouse and ended up here, I do like your versions, big thumbs up.
Thanks for the follow and all the positive comments. It's really nice to get feedback from Roy Harper fans!! He should be better known.
@@jonpollardmusic I have been a fan of Roy Harper ever since i saw him at Stonehenge all those many many years ago. He is very much underated.
That must have been a great gig - I've seen some of the video footage. Once people have seen Roy play live, they seem to become fans for life. It's an experience that stays with you!
How about a cover of Roy Harper, One For all. I will subscribe and wait and see. lol.
I've more or less got "commune" worked out. The singing is really hard - remembering the words is hard! There should be more videos to come at some point in the future, I'm currently recording some of my own songs and it's taking a long time...
good stuff
😎🎸🤘

Superb Jon.
Thanks! :o)
@@jonpollardmusic You're welcome. Keep up the good work!!
Hi Jon. Just discovered your channel, and I wanted to let you know how much I've been enjoying your Roy Harper covers. You really nail the "feel" as well as the music. I first saw Roy at the Knebworth festival in 1978, and I've been a fan ever since. And I was just talking about your cover of Frozen Moment with Joao on the BadSpeech channel! Will you be doing any more RH songs? All the best.
Thank you Marc, it's all about the "feel"! João has been a huge help in getting the technical guitar bits right, they can be very tough. These videos are mainly from two Facebook live gigs I did. That was the one and only time I've played Frozen Moment in front of people. 🙂 When we are free from lockdowns i would like to play these songs to people in real life... Somehow...
@@jonpollardmusic Well, maybe you could do one of those gigs up here in Manchester! 🙂
That would be great! 🙂
