In 1867, Charles Dickens visited Syracuse, reading "A Christmas Carol" at the Weiting Theater, and writing to his friends about some (admittedly less than flattering) thoughts on our beloved city.

“We must be of one mind” in harmony with the teachings of the Peacemaker! I was blessed to speak privately with Chief Oren Lyons in 1986. I was enquiring how I and my family could become members of the the Six Nations confederacy because it was my understanding that the confederacy was the only tribe with a Treaties with England and France predating the Constitution of the USA, before that colonization of Turtle Island. I had walked through a snowstorm following a dream I had of the Council of elders there at Onondaga. Four days I stayed in his mother’s home and on the fourth day Oren met with me. We went to the Longhouse and he spoke about the teachings of the Peacemaker. His teachings were inclusive not excluding anyone. There was an event that happened on February 27, 1973, the Wounded Knee Occupation. Eventually, Dennis Banks, a founder of the American Indian Movement sought political asylum at Onondaga who followed the White roots of Peace back to the shores of Lake Onondaga as well…he was allowed to stay…there were inter-marriages there…eventually bitterness arose within the community and a division between the “full blooded” (FBI) Indians and the mixed families and children. The two opposing sides argued their cases in the Longhouse for months until the closing argument of an Onondaga born and raised woman stated, “I am full blooded Onondaga so before I, my husband, and our children should be asked to leave our tribe and home here…then everyone who is NOT full blooded Onondaga (including Dennis Banks) must leave as well!” Or words to that effect. Oren said that in the Longhouse was complete silence (a sign that all agree) so he stated that one could hear a pin drop! That was the consensus of the people! So the Chiefs had no choice but to support the decision of the people! … Oren went on stating that due to that decision, there were still many wounds that hadn’t healed as of 1986 when we spoke. I know we (myself never knowing my biological family) human beings MUST change and I believe true intentional communities need to be created in harmony with the teachings aligned with The Peacemaker. I believe the teachings could be summed up as “Love your neighbor as yourself” and Love your Creator….

  • @here_we_go_again2571

Thank you. This was interesting . Luv the old pix 😊 *1838 ...Arched Culvert Built* (During the improvements/rebuilding of " *Clinton's Ditch*" -- the original 4 foot deep canal) The " *Improved Erie Canal* " (built in 1835 and later) is now called the " *Old Erie Canal*" (on the Canalway Trail sections of the Empire State Trail) *Old Erie Canal* Iwas a completely man-made waterway; built parallel (with some excptions) to *Clinton's Ditch* (b. 1817 --1825). Aqueducts for the canal were built over creeks (previously crossed by mules on a wooden bridge towing the canal boat across the path of a stream) The improved canal was was twice as wide and almost twice as deep as Clinton's Ditch. It went through the villages and cities that were sprang up as the original Clinton's Ditch progressed across New York state. Later the *Barge Canal* (b. 1903/1905 -- 1918) was comissioned. It had a different route, than the Old Erie Canal. There was no longer a towpath and the use of state of the art (for the time) technology allowed dredging of natural waterways. The Barge canal was12 feet deep. Also, fewer locks were required than for the Old Erie Canal.[1] *1907 Failure of Culvert Over Onondaga Creek* Shown in the video. Repaired in a few weeks. *2015 Repair of Culvert Over Onondaga Creek* It looks like the level for the roadway is higher than the original (cut stone) Old Erie Canal aqueduct. I think the current road is Rte 5/ErieBoulevard West Canal Blvd, between Franklin Street and West Street. [Somebody please correct me if I am wrong] According to street view in Google maps there are places nearby the creek where you can park and walk over to the side of the creek. In addition to the Onondaga Creek walkway in the city of Syracuse, eas well as the Erie Canal Museum in Syracuse (as well as other places to obtain information that I do not know about) the state has the Empire State Trail[2] and the Canalway, Erie Canal Trail[3] In some areas the trails intersect. Both trails are excellent for hiking and biking. ___________________________________________ 1.) In 2014 the NYS Barge Canal Corporation was renamed the *NYS Canal Corporation* and the names of the four existing canals in NYS were returned to the original names: "Erie Canal" "Champlain Canal", "Oswego Canal" and "Cayuga-Seneca Canal" 2.) Empire State Trail empiretrail.ny.gov/ (Scroll down to see the trails) 3.) Canalway, Erie Canal Trail canals.ny.gov/trails/about.html

This interview highlights the impatience reflected in the leading questions and interruptions by the interviewer and so many other such American reporters. The guest was either interrupted mid-sentence or had already answered a question only to be requestioned or challenged to answer differently. Someone might/should have pulled out the talking stick. I think the guest handled this interview like a CHIEF!

So, the Lake was doomed because of Solvay Process…..I hope our city got enough money for granting permission to dump their waste into this lake. Everything’s always about money, and who will benefit. Onondaga Park is still a beautiful park to visit however. Despite not being able to swim in the lake there’s plenty to do just the same.
