This was my Mum’s go to movie whenever my Dad was at sea. He was a Sub officer in Australia for 9 years and as he got older he ended up looking a lot like Connery in this film. So when dad was away at work, Mum would crank this out for comfort watch

I really have little use for Alec Baldwin, a nasty, loudmouthed leftist Democrat bedwetter, but - I give the devil his due. He did a very good job portraying Jack Ryan in this movie.

I remember back then. I was in the USCG on the CGC Venturous. The "Red October" (a barge with an overlay to look like a submarine on the surface) was docked right behind us at the Coast Guard pier in San Pedro. They were giving our crew a chance to be extras in the movie. I opted out because they wanted us to shave our heads. Sean Connery came aboard our ship (CGC Venturous) for a tour. We were all supposed to be below decks as our Captain showed him around. I was doing some last minute polishing on the bridge when they came up, so I got to shake hands with Sean Connery. I thought I was gonna get in trouble, but the captain just smiled and nothing ever came of it. I know it's weird, but I've remembered and cherished that moment for all these years and still tell that story. I've always been a Sean Connery fan even before that movie.

Alec Baldwin a “super brain”……ha ha ha…..not smart enough to not kill his cinematographer with a set gun.

To this day, one of the best films to come out of Hollywood. Every actor nailed their role!!

An interesting side note to Scott Glenn's story about Commander Fargo is that Fargo recieved the Vice Admiral James Bond Stockdale Award for Inspirational Leadership Award, given to honor the inspirational leadership.

And they killed a private citizen and sank a tugboat off the coast of Long Beach, CA. while filming this movie. The name of the tug was the Barcona.

Its a shame they took a tug and crew down while towing this pos barge.

1989 I quit my job so I could see East Germany and Moscow while it was still Soviet because I grew up with all the spy culture and Soviet Motorcycles, I wanted to see it before it changed. I got a folding bike and back pack and traveled all over the east Germany and Moscow it was great east Germany and west Germany was so different night and day and Moscow there was nothing in the stores and I saw Lenin who looked like wax and went to GUM dept store and there was nothing to buy so i bought some Russian stencils. When I got home got my job back. Great Movie

Whoever _edited_ this featurette - particularly the music - was _brilliant_. Now I gotta go watch the movie again. :) (It's the first DVD I ever bought, specifically _for the music_... I mean, the story is great, even if the Russian is lousy, there's _so_ many quotable lines.. but nothing short of digital really lets those Russian fifths shine... Poledouris is a wizard, up there with Elfman and Zimmer, and he can do multiple genres (Quigley is _completely_ different)... that is one thing that's missing from this, was the story behind the music... wish someone would make _that_...
