The "Productive Yodel": How Instability in the Voice Can Actually Be a Good Sign
zhlédnutí 2,1KPřed 2 lety
In this video, I talk about how, as singers are finding a better balance with their mixed voice around the register transition, they may experience some temporary instability in the voice. This "yodel" can actually be an indication that the singer is developing better balance and flexibility in the voice. singwise.com karyn@singwise.com SingWisevocals

Expanding the Belly More For Singing: How to Encourage Better Expansion When We Inhale for Singing
zhlédnutí 8KPřed 4 lety
Does expanding the belly more necessarily mean that the diaphragm is lowering more and we're therefore getting a deeper, fuller inhale? In this video, I answer that question and offer an exercise for improving flexibility of the lower ribs to get a better lateral expansion and thus a deeper inhale.

What about sleeping posture
Is this an exercise that will just help anyone's overall voice for singing? I'm a 66 year old man who isn't trying to become a true vocalist. But, I would like to be able to improve my voice to sing along while playing my guitar.
For me it's just a lack of ear training. I wish more teachers on youtube covered that aspect rather than just mechanical issues :/
Your instruction and thoughts on vocal technique principles is par excellence! I haven't been able to engage with you or your teachings as much as I would like, I absolutely idolise you and what you communicate. The voice you write with (hah!) in your texts is authoritative and commands respect.
What are false vocal folds?
Thanks! When singing Falsetto with a straw, the air seems not able to flow from the lung. Any tips? Thanks!
hahah its hard ahah
Absolutely like this thank you
please upload more videos like this that we can learn more about
Any good books on thos subject? Im taking singing lessons for about 6 months as a near middle aged man and I am now very interested in the physics and biology of it. Would love to read through a few books on the subject.
Oh my gosh. I just went through 12 weeks of student teaching at the end of my degree and was sick for 9 weeks of that. I had RSV, Strep, RAD, and finally a cold with laryngitis and complete loss of my voice for at least 2.5 to 3 weeks solid. I finished on May 3rd, and it's July 20th. I still haven't recovered my full range and it's been scaring me to death. Listening to you with the airy onset, trying to get the note to come is exactly what I'm experiencing. My upper range is gone, I can't get those notes out, and if I do, it's because I'm straining. I do worry it'll never come back!
Tounge tie? Any hints?
I wish I had have found my voice at a much younger age, think of all the extra range I would have! I'm in awe at your ability to convey the ideas and theory... It's got me to a place I can make the room resonate in chest, head, (one of two tones of) whistle registers. I might not make a polished sound but it sounds more of a pure tone than I have ever been prepared to hear from myself! My neighbours' lives will never be the same 😉-🎶
how to inhale fast and sing high completing a phrase. i get cut in the middle as i gasp to get air .
I remember having a cough that was so bad, that even when I thought about what I wanted to say aloud, BANG! I put myself on strict vocal rest, which made for a funny impromptu face game with the guest speaker in psychology class, an awkward "conversation" with a colleague, and substituting my voice with my viola in orchestra.
last week My son lost his high notes when he hit 13 years old out of nowhere, he used to hit all the notes in a steve-perry type of stuff and the day he was about to go and make his first street singing guitar show he suddenly couldnt sing high notes and he also started struggling with high notes and had the same problem at 3:17, i for sure know its not puberty since he had already changed voice before hitting 13 and he has the same voice as now
Glenn Campbell.
Thank you❤
I love this thanks l work it never tried before l only did as a kid but l thought was a childish thing but since it will help with my vocals l will try it out again thanks for opening my eyes
How long should the swelling last with rest before seeing a E N T?
YES!!!!!! All of this! Singers-and instrumentalists, too-have to learn how to produce the sounds they’re aiming for…but the constant mental feedback (“Was that right?” “That did not sound good.” “My voice cracked!!”) is like the WORST OF MICROMANAGERS. How can your voice become free, if you don’t play with it? Allow your voice to play, in a judgement-free zone!!! 👏👏👏
Fantastic!!! Thank you!! 👏 I have been extremely confused by explanations of appoggio that explain the “leaning” of appoggio is on the larynx. The professors/singers sounds extremely throaty and unpleasant…
I cured my Acid reflux symptoms and chronic (halitosis)Bad breath smell from stomach when talking with alternative herbs & gluten free diet protocol when I came across drohanon,✊
Wow this was so enlightening as a mezzo, especially the part of timbre and not carrying weight!! Thank you 🙏🏽
being soft in the middle as she said has really helped...i can sing E5 and F5 easily now...in just a manner of minutes 😮🎉❤
Is this applicable to countertenor voices
Important to differentiate between tension and position. For singing with richness there is some slight positioning to enable dark tones.as the tongue moves back to allow the base to move forward, the hyoid comes forward and descends very slightly. The vowels being used in the illustration are white and not rich. They are closed throat not suitable for, proper classical singing.
Could we hear you sing? The singing you briefly demonstrated was with a closed throat and lacked richness/chiaroscuro.
The tongue moving back does not close the throat. The way the genioglossus works is that when the tip of the tongue moves back the base moves forward away from the back of the throat. The tongue bunches up, front moving back, base moving forward. As in the EE or EH vowels. The tip of the tongue needs to be drawn back behind the lower teeth. It cannot press up against the lower teeth and should not be forward of the front teeth.
It would be helpful to be more precise about what is meant by low larynx. What is the precise position anatomically. Low relative to what? Resting non speaking position? Lower than resting position? Slightly higher than resting position? Lower than speaking voice position? And what gets lowered? Does the hyoid bone lower? If so does not the tongue descend? It is not helpful to just say low larynx. Corelli and DelMonaco lowered their larynx a great deal, almost down to the suprasternal notch.
Moving to music helps me get rid of strain when I sing.
Wonderful, WONDERFUL interview. Thank you so much!!!
OMG!!! I thought I was crazy for thinking all this information but never hearing it from outside. I'm so grateful for the existence of this video and now it all makes so much sense. Thank you for informing us!!
Didn’t help at all.
I fnd that on the vowel Eh, the 4th harmonic of the first formant is the most dominant on the C3 note. As I go on up the notes, the F1 H2 is becoming more dominant. Does this make sense? I think I should get F1 H2 on all notes
oh wow…around 24:00 when he demonstrated the over/under-vowel concept, the most salient frequency for each vowel was higher/lower based on where the vowel stood within the F1/F2 chart. i guess that makes sense since the “over” vowel is more correspondent with F2 (more influenced by the shape of the front of the mouth) and the “under” vowel with F1 (back of the throat, which is where he was plucking!) not sure about that explanation and i haven’t watched the rest of the video, but it makes sense and is fascinating!
Aside from singing, has anyone benefited from this for SPEAKING?
Very good explanation! I had 4 or 5 epiphanies from this. Biggest one being we want to shape our vocal tract to resonate at the frequencies of the harmonics of the voice.
I agree, I also believe that you spend a bit too much time admonishing those whose behavior you seek to correct and not enough trying to instruct the proper behavior. Specifically, you state proper goals and identify errors in behavior excellently, but unless you provide specific examples about how constructive criticism, the process of providing the perceived strengths and weaknesses in a performers or practitioners art in order to allow them to better communicate their intent to their audience, differs from being critical.Which is typified by being cruel or tearing down, mocking or making one's art into a humorous example. These behaviors aren't constructive. It is likely that those who engage in this behavior already know this, but better safe than sorry
Very informative, thanks.
Very good explanation, clear and concise. Thank you.
Wow! You are so smart in singing theory.
very cool explanation, instant SUB! :) i have one question though. if i sing higher notes, and want to track the resonance, according to this theory i would need to close my resonators more the higher i go in pitch. but when we sing, the opposite is the truth, to keep the same sound quality up high, we have to open our mouth more and more. why is that? =D
May I ask Is the belly pushed inwards or outwards when we tighten our abdominal muscles?
This is over my head as an indie singer but a good taste of what I could work on.
Should tounge touch pencil?
For whatever reason, it is very difficult to find vocal lessons that talk about how you FEEL when you are singing, specifically sensations and actions of muscles that control one’s breath. I have taken in-person lessons from two teachers, and have watched many videos on CZcams - this is the first time a teacher has taught me that the obliques support the latter part of a breath. This is something I’ve intuitively done, but never knew it was actually correct. The held expansion of the lower abs to keep the diaphragm down is also something I was never taught. Both of these concepts now fit perfectly with the correct execution of the Farinelli exercise. I will be be watching more of your videos for sure, thank you!
That took a dark turn when she mentioned her compromised abdominal wall.
I always warm up on my way to gigs or the recording studio. I mean full vocalizing routines. Of course driving safety is always the priority, but I don’t find it hinders my technique and I always show up and can perform at a high level with good technique. A caveat to this is that this is probably not ideal for someone who is just learning technique and who hasn’t learned what good singing feels like in their body . And this should not be the only way someone vocalizes or sings. It’s important to have a sense of what proper technique feels like in an optimal postural position so you have something to compare it to or else I could see someone getting into very bad habits.
