    Nice drive on the AZ axis. I might switch over to the belt drive like you are using. Are you happy with the overall accuracy?

    • @TheMiniSuperCub
      @TheMiniSuperCub Před rokem

      Yes, accuracy was impressive. Innitially I had an issue with a 3d printed altitude bearing that cracked and changed the shape and was throwing off my accuracy, but once that was fixed, it was spot on. Recently I also aded OnStep to an equatorial mount, an old vixen super polaris and it was also spot on. I let it track Jupiter at high magnification to see after how long will it drift out of the FOV. It never drifted, after 30 min Jupiter was still dead center, so I stopped it.

    I bought a mini dc motor kit and a controller. However, I cannot control the speed to make it rotate slowly. It's either doesn't spin or spin too fast. I'm using it with a 9v rectangular battery. The controller wouldn't power on with 2AA. Any suggestion to make it rotate slowly like yours? TIA

    • @TheMiniSuperCub
      @TheMiniSuperCub Před rokem

      This hand controller failed, showing the wrong type of mount after booting up. I uploaded the movie on youtube to use the link and show the movie on a discussion forum as a proof that the mount failed. Some experienced people read my forum thread, looked at the video and came with a recommendation that actually helped me to fix it. I never though of the people that will find it randomly and that it won't make any sense for them. It was meant to be viewed by a small audience, not as a public educational video.

  • @TheMiniSuperCub

    If you want a wireless remote and are comfortable to program an arduino, you can reproduce my project by following the links in the movie description. You can take a simpler approach if you don't really need a wireless remote or you don't want to use/program an arduino board. If you are OK with a wired remote control, you need 3 things: 1- a motor with gears and arm on the shaft, 2 - a battery, 3 - a speed controller. For the speed controller search eBay for "3A DC Motor Speed Controller PWM Adjustable Reversible Switch 6V/12V/24V". Here is a direct link to it: www.ebay.com/itm/383301258336 The red and green buttons will turn the motor left/right and the potentiometer will adjust the speed of the motor. There are 4 green connectors, 2 for the battery and 2 for the motor. For the motor you can use a hobby servo motor that has gears and an arm attached to the shaft. These are cheap, less than $10. You have remove the electronic board from the servo and connect the 2 wires from the L298N green connectors directly to the motor. Also, you have to make a small modification to the servo so it can rotate continuously, because originally they move only 360 degrees or even less. There are many movies on CZcams, just search for "convert servo to continuous rotation" These motors are working at 5-7 volts, so 4 AA batteries in series and a battery holder will work perfect. Here are some pictures in case the ebay link does not work: i.ebayimg.com/images/g/6hsAAOSw8dJd57wS/s-l1600.jpg i.ebayimg.com/images/g/KPAAAOSwhbZd57wb/s-l1600.jpg If you want to use a wireless remote control without arduino, you need a wireless module, a battery and a motor. The wirelsee module can be this: www.ebay.com/itm/333649134054?hash=item4daf09c1e6:g:EzAAAOSwsTxXjkau These modules are working at 12V so you will need a 12V battery to power the board and find a suitable 12V motor. Also you can use 12V motor to power the board and convert 12V to 5V and use a 5V servo motor. You can use a convertor like this: www.ebay.com/itm/262503257094?hash=item3d1e69d406:g:gM8AAOSwNuxXaKI0

    • @TheMiniSuperCub

      Yes, I got it to work using ""Leap frog", which means the mount will point ahead of the satellite, stop, and wait for the satellite to cross the field of view, then move again in front of the satellite and then repeat....There is another option, using the "Legacy Driver" option, but it did not work for me. This second option is supposed to move to the satellite and then smoothly track it. Here is the thread on Cloudy Nights that helped me get the leap frog option to work: www.cloudynights.com/topic/732105-skytrack-first-test/

    Sorry for all the questions did you put a lens in front of the camera itself, lexan or plexiglass and then seal it? I was thinking 1/4 inch lexan in front of the lens. Not sure if this would obscure the view. Any thoughts?

    • @TheMiniSuperCub
      @TheMiniSuperCub Před 9 lety

      Lexan is your best bet. I built a newer version with Lexan and it works very well. Just be careful not to scratch it. Lexan is tough to break, but easy to scratch. Yes, it must be sealed. Before applying the sealant, make sure you roughen all the areas were the sealant will touch the lens and the enclosure, then wash with Isopropyl alcohol.

    I used a reverse camera and a reverse camera monitor. I enclosed the camera in a PVC then coated in marine epoxy. I used a power/video cable that I got from ebay and am running 2 12v sealed lead acid batteries to power the camera and monitor. Thanks for the idea.

  • @TheMiniSuperCub
    @TheMiniSuperCub Před 11 lety

    Also, instead of glass, you should use Lexan from Home Depot. Lexan is a lot stronger, but be careful, it scratches easily and there is no fix for the scratches. My new version of the camera is using Lexan instead of glass and a soft 3 wires cable.

  • @TheMiniSuperCub
    @TheMiniSuperCub Před 11 lety

    The cable I used was computer network cat5 cable, but I do not recommend it. You need a flexible cable with wires, Sayal Electronics is selling a good variety. I am not sure what you mean about enclosing the connections inside the PVC? Haier monitor should be good.

  • @cloehr1

    What did you use for the cable? I just bought similar items and went with the video/power cord 50' and will enclose the connections inside of the PVC. Do you think this will work? I also am using a Haire 7" color monitor.

    @Icehut , I tested it for 90 minutes with a LiPo battery 11.1V 1.3 Ah and it used about 300mAh. That is the camera alone, because the recorder has it's own internal LiIon battery that is supposed to last about 6 hr in recording mode at room temperature. I can use a gell cell 12V 7Ah that will provide more than enough power for few fishing sessions. I need to run more tests in cold temp to know for sure.
