If you love God, you will obey his commandments, if you love others you will advise them to leave their sins, which lead to death, as you want them to find life, which is only in God, instead of leaving them to perish.

Mother Teresa was an awful person. She believed suffering brought you closer to god and that only through suffering can you be saved. She made sick and dying people suffer in their last moments all because she thought it made some dude in the clouds happy.

I remember taking a walk (much longer than ten minutes) in the National Gallery of Art in Washington. D.C. When I left I felt like I had lived a lifetime for every painting or sculpture I had seen.

For me, empathy is understanding that we all wear masks to hide our stuff (and that we all have stuff we'd like to hide). Sometimes the most empathetic thing to do isn't unmasking someone else, but stepping gently into their masquerade and being our genuine self.

I always thought that the focus of Matthew 18:21 was on the number of times someone sins against us. Instead, it’s how many times we have to forgive them (i.e., “seventy times seven”). I think that’s significant because I’ve never personally experienced someone sinning against me 490 times, but I have experienced someone breaking my heart one time and I’ve replayed that in my head close to 490 times, if not more. Each time I remember is another opportunity to forgive them and to ask for forgiveness for the moments where I didn’t.

I remember speaking with a friend several years ago about this theological concept. I told them that if Jesus was fully divine and fully human then his life not only reveals what God is like, but what humanity is like. Consequently, he divinized every facet of human existence and humanized every feature of divine essence. I don't remember exactly, but I think they looked at me like I had bugs crawling out of my ears. I was a self-proclaimed "evangelical" at the time, but upon reflection, it seems like I've probably been a de facto Swedenborgian before I even knew of such a thing.

“Yes” with conditions is just “no” with extra steps. I think that applies to love, too, in that we are so afraid of the vulnerability love requires, we create conditions to give us an “out” when loving gets tough and chalk it up as “tough love”. Love is hard, but we make it difficult and there’s a difference. Blessings!

Whenever I need to loosen my grip, I remember a helpful meditation I learned: "Let it come. Let it be. Let it go." I've found that finding something to hold on to isn't as important as finding Something to hold on to me. Blessings!
