How to Detail a New Car
If you want to PROPERLY detail a new car, you need to know the most common types of paint defects and other visual imperfections new cars get between the factory and your driveway.
These include but are not limited to: swirls, water spots, holograms, wheel rash, bonded contaminants, ceramic coating high spots... the list goes on.
How do you look for these types of new car issues, and more importantly, how do you fix them? I teach all that and more in this condensed lesson from a recent livestream detailing class!

Teaching Matte Maintenance to NEW Kia Sportage Owner!
One of the CSI questions asked of new car buyers, and warranty service customers, is was the vehicle washed. The consequences of a negative score are substantial as are the benefits of a positive score. I’m confident dealers would be delighted with the elimination of this particular form of leverage and so would many of their customers. Good talk Mike 🎉
Yes sir & grabbed my do not wash sign .
Even if they don’t wash it I would also tell them “do not put any of that shiny 💩on the tires either. “When I got my new Subaru Forester home it took four rounds of tire cleaner plus one of APC at full strength to break it down. It felt like motor oil.
You lost credibility when you said by the harbor freight d warranty

Mmmh for sure you get what you pay for.. and of corse Hercules is Chinese right? But.. we assume is going to fail way before the Flex but how do we know for sure? It’s not guaranteed because we haven’t tested longer enough…I hope is good I have been longing for the flex for a long time now but a haven’t been able to jump over the price of it…just hope is half the quantity of the German so that price of Hercules I can afford to buy it is within my reach
Sometimes the quality you're paying for is NOT on the outside, but on the inside. Something ALL FLEX tools have that copies don't is their 7-function microprocessor. No other polisher that I know of, be it an orbital or a rotary, has the 7-function microprocessor that comes from the factory in all FLEX polishers. The FLEX 7-function Microprocessor includes, 1: Provides constant speed control via the tachometer generator. 2: Provides a soft, gradual start of the rotation of the electric motor that powers the drive mechanism. 3: Controls the accelerator trigger switch. 4: Provides restart protection after a power interruption. 5: Provides overload protection. 6: Monitors the temperature of the coil windings and turns the polisher off before damage can occur. 7: Controls speed set by the variable speed dial. One of the most important functions is the heat sensor, which monitors tool temperature. If the tool becomes too hot, the 7-function microprocessor will turn the tool off so no damage can occur. Another key benefit to the 7-function microprocessor is the power interruption function. If power goes off to the tool, when power is restored, the tool will NOT turn back on until you release the speed trigger lock. This prevents the tool from turning on and possibly causing damage to a vehicle or a person. Thanks for watching and commenting. -Mike Phillips

On the rare occasion that I do go to the dealership I stressed that I do not want the vehicle washed and they say well it's complimentary there's no charge. I Said I don't care I still don't want it. LOL.
Good for you. In this day and age, you MUST be PROACTIVE when dropping your car off at the dealership or they will wash it and in most cases, put in a lot of swirls and scratches. Like my saying goes, It takes HOURS to buff out a car, it takes SECONDS to put scratches into the paint Thanks for watching and commenting! -Mike Phillips

what about waxing?
Yes, waxing or any quality paint protection product will help to prevent water spots. Waxing will not normally remove water spots unless it's a cleaner/wax or AIO. One thing I like to point out when it comes to water spots - modern car paint is pretty tough or *stout*. Anytime you discover water spots, you have to stop and think? *_What's in the water?_* There must be something so corrosive in the water that it can corrode or etch into the urethan clearcoat resin. Don't drink the water.... Thanks for watching and commenting! -Mike Phillips
Aways great advice!! Much appreciated Mike!! 🏆👍🏻

Any recommendations on which 5in backing plates work well for this model? I heard that the smaller backing plates can throw it out of balance.
These types of tools will always have some level of vibration as do most orbital polishers - it's the nature of the beast. I can't say I notice any difference in vibration using the factory 6" backing plate versus the non-factory 5" backing plate. Plus remember - you're going to attach a pad; this can cause vibration. As the pad becomes wet with product, this can cause vibration. At the end of the day, if you're going to use a tool like this to do all the paint correction to a car, the size of the backing plate and any vibration it may or may not cause will be the least of your concerns. A quality backing plate for this tool is made by Lake Country Manufacturing, they've been making these for decades and they are uniform in construction and balance. Buff and Shine Pads also offers a similar, high-quality 5" backing plate. If vibration is a concern, I would avoid no-name, cheap backing plates off Amazon. It might be balanced, but it might not be balanced. Thank you for watching and commenting. -Mike Phillips
@@mikephillipsrealworlddetailing thank you Mike for the detailed reply there. I will be placing an order for the Lake Country.
Is there going to be a video of the whole truck correctly done?
Hi Adam, the answer is "no". This was done a few months and if I remember correctly when we shot this video, I had already washed it, clayed it, did all the paint correction and fixed the scratches in the taillights EXCEPT for the driver's side of the truck bed. I saved the driver's side truck bed just for this video. After shooting the video, it would have been 5:00pm and Yancy, the video guy will have packed up all his gear and went home while I stuck around and finished out the driver's side truck bed. The owner inspected my work 9-ways to Sunday and was 100% satisfied with the work. Thanks for watching and commenting. -Mike Phillips

"holograms" - that's a new one on me. The presenter loves to create his own terminology but it means nothing to others.
This term has been used a long time.
extremely used term to experienced detailers
Your ignorance is oozing...
@waxmanvids5015 I think you meant this for someone else. My comment was clearly defending Mike, someone I've followed since his days at Meguiars.
@@waxmanvids5015 You too, brother. BTW, I loved hearing Mike say DISO, too!
My daughter bought her dream car. A Mercedes. She took it home and wanted me to look at it. It still had all of the residue from the plastic protective sheeting they use for shipping on all of the horizontal surfaces and windshield. All ugly star shaped and flower shaped designs right in the paint and glass. Where do you begin to deal with that. Can’t believe it.
awful
Nice!!!!👌
So if dealership does that, do you have to take the car
You have the option to take the car back and say in these exact words, *This is not acceptable* You need to do this within a very short period of time. In a perfect world, you inspect the car BEFORE you pay for it. The owner of the truck you see in this video had a commitment from the dealership, in Michigan I believe, to pay for the detail job, which they did. Thanks for watching and commenting. -Mike Phillips
If I use the matte paint cleanser, do I have to reapply the matte paint coating or should I wash it after?
Yes, we recommend re-applying Matte Paint Coating over the area the Cleanser was used.
Great tip. What polisher are you using? What is the machining?
The tool I'm using is the FLEX PXE-80 or as everyone called it, the Pixie. The shaft is also by FLEX and it's called the Shafty. Thanks for watching and commenting. -Mike Phillips

I started out with the meguiars version the G100. Back then that was it for da's. Now it's flex & rupes. Great video mike!! 🏆
The early Meguiar's G100 polishers were simply Porter Cable polishers with a Meguiar's *sticker* over the Porter Cable sticker. LOL - That said, the Porter Cable or G100 have been responsible for MILLIONS of cars being de-swirled and polished to perfection. RUPES and FLEX stand on the shoulders of Porter Cable. Thanks for watching and commenting. -Mike Phillips
That is a great color for an amphicar.
What pads would you recommend to be purchased along with the Hercules, also what kind of compound? (Beginner here)
That’s a great idea, I’ve used rags attached to a plastic screw driver to get in those Louvres it works but that looks way better
The Shafty, works great with the PiXiE the most important thing however is to be careful of the edges and take your time.
good stuff, but you need a cameraman that films & zips it 🤐
Does it work on Matt paint
You can get the harbor freight rotary with 8AH tool for $100 today on a deal.
I have done it too😜👌
IMO you cannot beat the long throw Bauer polisher and you can add a 5" Rupes backing plate with no mods (it vibrates less). I would buy the Rupes pads as well. I would change the Bauer long throw grease with lithium or Lucas Red and Tacky grease. Makes it quieter. $80 with no discounts.
I'm on the other side of the fence than you. The longer the stroke, the greater the chance for pad stalling as the outer edge of the buffing pad has MORE leverage over the spindle versus a short stroke polisher. Nothing wrong with this is you're not in a hurry or don't mind watching the backing plate and buffing pad for the entire time you're doing any paint correction steps to visually see if the pad you're using is actually rotating or has stalled-out. I call this Brain Drain. Of course, there's no issue with a gear-driven orbital when it comes to pad stalling. The good news is, there's so many great options when it comes to picking the polisher that's best for you and your style of detailing. Thank you for watching and commenting. -Mike Phillips
Hello Mike: I am looking at a DA Polisher. I am looking at brands like Shinemate, Feynmach, in 15 ir 21mm. Also, looking at DIY details 25mm DA. What is your honest option of the DIY details 25mm DA? Thank you
I have never used the DIY 25mm DA polisher, so I don't have any real-world experience to then have a real-world opinion. Generally speaking, the LONGER the stroke, the more the outer edge of a buffing pad has leverage over the spindle and the greater the risk for pad stalling. About the only time I use free spinning random orbital polishers is when either doing show car finishing work or when working on soft paint. My style is to knock out a car as fast as humanly possible while maintaining pro quality results, thus I use gear-driven orbital and avoid all the pad stalling issues as well as the Brain Drain that comes with them. Thank you for watching and commenting. -Mike Phillips
IMO you cannot beat the Bauer long throw polisher from HF. The Rupes 5" backing plate bolts on with no mods and it vibrates less. Also change the grease in the HF to lithium or Lucas Red and Tacky to make it quieter - $80 without any discounts.
Which backing plate they have that harbor freight one on sale today for 35 bucks I wanna buy it and upgrade plate idk which one to buy tho I never polished
