No excuse whatsoever to not see the ship. I guess if you ignore the long horn blasts then yes, it could get close enough to hear the water splashing on the bow of the ship. There are a lot of stupid people in sail boats. The pilot of the sailboat had no grasp of just how fast ships actually approach someone in their path. I have witnessed all the above during my years sailing the SF Bay

My understanding is that technically the sailboat has right of way ... but sometimes discretion is the better part of valour.

To be fair, the COLREG (which requires the motorized ship to give way) only applies outside the 12 miles zone, and outside certain shipping lanes. In the 12 miles zone, it depends per country (in NL, the sailing ship needs to give way, which is what we see here). On certain lakes, there can be other specific rules as well. But all these have one rule on top of all else, same as on the road: always avoid collision. Which is what the small ship is doing here. From a rules perspective, there's nothing wrong here. From a sailmanship perspective you might have a point that either ship should have reacted sooner. Also, what we don't see is the radio communication, or what happened before. It's possible that a maneuver happened by either ship that caused confusion and led to this.

Right of way in open seas was with the sailboat. Idiotic captain an crew seem sleeping or drinking hat the cruise vessel. But what good is right of way if you're dead? Captain of the sailboat made the right decision.

Yeah i got the impression the skipper of the sailboat decided to stick to his guns about being the stand on vessel, I'm quite surprised that the ferry did not do anything to avoid collision, even when going through a separation scene you tend to see the bigger vessels making course adjustments well early to avoid collision.

Even if I have the right of way over an unstoppable force, I'm still not going to check if I am really an unmovable object.

My grandson was at the helm with a barge approaching the stern, when a gust of wind caused us to round up. Grandson was caught off-guard and being a bit slow to respond to the helm, I grabbed the wheel and leaded us off the wind just in the nick of time. Pretty scary for sure.

i don't see anything wrong. when the bridge detects something wrong, they should send a sailor to thd bow with a portable radio or some flags, for some last second maneuvering.
