Sand Castles by Jackie McLaughlin at the Kelowna Art Gallery from April 8 to September 15, 2024
Jackie McLaughlin, Sand Castles, 2024, Moss, sand, metal, and stone.
Artist Jackie McLaughlin’s new installation Sand Castles is an exploration of ecological consciousness and environmental awareness. Rooted deeply within these themes, McLaughlin delves into the dynamics of creation, industrialism, and the inherent struggles between humanity and the natural world. Through her experimental sculpture, McLaughlin provides a poignant commentary on the fraught relationship between nature and humanity.
McLaughlin’s abstract sculpture, crafted from preserved moss, symbolizes the fragile balance of nature and its potential for growth and renewal. The juxtaposition of the natural elements - sand and manicured greenery - with industrial metal creates a poignant visual narrative. While the sand and greenery evoke notions of creation and harmony, the metal represents the relentless march of industrial progress, often at the expense of ecological integrity.
McLaughlin’s Sand Castles invites viewers to contemplate the interplay between humanity and the environment, urging us to reflect on our role as stewards of the Earth’s precious resources. It serves as a call to action, challenging us to reevaluate our relationship with nature and strive for a more sustainable future.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Jackie McLaughlin is an installation artist, object maker, and creative director based on the unceded territory of the syilx/Okanagan people. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from UBC, Okanagan Campus, and now operates her floral artistry company JAM Florals. McLaughlin is known for her concept driven installations using natural resources and is deeply inspired by nature’s organic artistry, expression, and seasonality. Her artistic practice seeks to apply methods that are least harmful to our environment, avoiding the use of foams, chemicals, and single-use plastics, and practicing sustainable foraging and sourcing.

why it dont stick to the botom?
In pottery, the reason glaze doesn't stick to the bottom of a piece is that the bottom is typically left unglazed to prevent the piece from fusing to the kiln shelf during firing. This process involves either applying wax resist or simply wiping off the glaze from the bottom before firing. The wax resist creates a barrier that prevents glaze from adhering to the surface, while wiping off the glaze ensures that the bottom remains clean and free of any glaze material. This technique is essential to avoid damaging both the pottery and the kiln during the firing process.
I'll never look t melted chocolate the same after this
Haha, right? It's amazing how pottery can transform our everyday perceptions. The glaze really does look like melted chocolate before it's fired! 🍫 It's all part of the magic of pottery-turning everyday experiences into art.
I don't know what color that glaze will be when finished but I sure want milk chocolate now.
Haha, the glaze does have that delicious milk chocolate look before firing! It's always a surprise with pottery-this one is going to turn into a beautiful green after firing. 🍫🍃 Pottery glazes are full of surprises!
As beautiful as this lady and her art supplies are, it would be good to actually see the effects she's trying to describe to you...
Thank you for the feedback! We've taken your suggestion to heart and will feature more straight-on shots in our upcoming videos to better showcase Lynda's techniques. Stay tuned for our next video on August 16th, where you'll get a clear view of how to apply watercolor from the tube. We hope you'll find it helpful and inspiring!
Stupid
I love your video🎥❤❤❤
Its a real shame lgbtq ruined the art sector. My brother, a crook, hes such an artist but because of the stigma its impossible to indulge in his talent.
That paintings really good !!! <3
Thank you! I appreciate you watching and taking time to comment! ❤
Hi
Thank you for this
You are welcome :) :) So glad you found this useful.
So very relaxing.
Thank you - creating is fun and relaxing for me :) :)
Is the silver fox brush made of fox?
❤
i love your videos!!!❤❤
You are a very helpful person!
This was pretty insightful! It makes me wish to get back into watercolour
I hope you do get back to watercolours and discover a renewed passion for them! 😊
its not science, just say "pull it back"
Thank you this is really interesting I’ll keep it in mind next time
Thanks. Many don’t worry about the quality of the water, but it’s something that made sense when it was first suggested to me and is now a part of my everyday practice. Happy painting! 😊
Vinegar is better than bleach at fighting mold. Maybe some vinegar can be added to the water when painting??
That might be something worth researching, especially in areas with high humidity where mould is an issue. Personally, I would not want to add vinegar to fine watercolour paints since it is an acid. I suppose it would be okay for crafts and practice, but for fine watercolours that will be on display in galleries and for sale, I would 0:59 always use acid free paper and products to ensure the quality and longevity of the painting. Let me know if you try it! 😊
good job for recycling item and use it🎉
Thank you - being able to reuse or recycle something is important :) I am so happy to be able to use these tree branches from my backyard :) :)
also, heat lossens the glue. so just a few seconds with a hairdryer or heat gun can help immensely
Thanks for the reminder! I prefer to not use a hair dryer in my studio so it didn’t even cross my mind to mention that. 😊
What does waxing do?
Great question! Waxing in pottery is a technique used to resist glaze in specific areas of a piece. By applying wax to the bottom or other parts of your pottery, you prevent the glaze from sticking to those areas during the glazing process. This is particularly useful to ensure the bottom of your piece remains unglazed so it doesn't stick to the kiln shelf during firing. Waxing also allows for more intricate glazing designs, as you can control where the glaze will and won't go. It's a handy trick to keep your pieces looking clean and professional! 🌟 #PotteryTips #WaxingTechnique #ProcessArtDiscovery
@@processartdiscovery cool, thank you for answering 😊

I could not see the piece you were working on. Better camera angle please.
Thank you so much for your feedback! I truly appreciate your input on the camera angles. We took your suggestion to heart and tried a different angle in a subsequent video, capturing a dead center view of the painting process. I think you'll find it much more engaging. Here’s the link to that video: czcams.com/video/zIEjHJqJ6-A/video.html I hope you enjoy it and look forward to hearing your thoughts!
This is impeccable
Thank you! 😊

This is beautiful ❤
Thanks so very much! ❤😊
I can almost see what they are making. Nice camera angle.
Okay not going to lie those fat sculptures at the beginning look like corporate slop art except for worse because they are in bronze and 3D
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Art can evoke different reactions and interpretations, and it's always interesting to hear diverse perspectives. Geert Maas's sculptures are known for their unique style and the use of bronze to bring his vision to life. The choice of material and form often carries significant meaning for the artist. If you're interested, we have more videos that delve into the stories and inspirations behind his works. We appreciate your engagement and hope you'll check out more of our content!

Thank you!! These are a favourite of mine to make :) :)
😄 The 'rule of thumb' actually dates back to a time when people used their thumbs as a rough measurement tool. It's believed to have originated in agriculture, where a thumb's width was used to measure planting depth. So, while the middle finger, pinky, and the rest of the gang are all important, the thumb took the spotlight for its practicality. Thanks for bringing a smile to our faces with your humor! 👍 Keep those questions coming! #FunFacts #PotteryHumor
I know why its not a rule of the middle finger. So why is it called a rule of thumb? Why not a rule of the pinky or any other finger?
So you explain for 30 seconds how to do something and then cut the video off instantly when you start to show an example

❤Thanks so much! I hope you can try this method out and see the results for yourself - I think you’ll be pleased 😊
Love the boutique and the video. Will have to get over there and check it out. Congratulations Debby.
