THE NORTH RACE — A Cycling Film By Restrap
How far north can you ride in 24 hours?
Restrap ambassador Josh Reid takes on the challenge to see how far north he can ride from Restrap HQ by latitude. This is The North Race.
A balancing act between careful route planning and self sufficiency, Josh planned his route through the Yorkshire Dales, Cumbria, Edinburgh and beyond with the aim of getting close to Aberdeen. You can find his route here: www.komoot.com/tour/1521954200
-
We invite you to plan and execute a time-trial as far north (by latitude) as you can within 24 hours starting from the Restrap factory in Leeds. Balance marginal gains, comfort over distance, route-planning and minimal stop time to push yourself as far as possible within the timeframe.
This challenge is open to anyone, costs nothing to enter and the rules are simple.

how thick is your saddle? is it soft or thin-hard?
Please tell me brand, and what items did you put in? Give me list please
Relentless winds, dog chases, and that music... I have Turkish tummy
Incredible & Inspiring :)
311 miles sounds abit less..why is everyone changing to kms on a challenge 😬
We're in the UK so we use metric and imperial measurements interchangeably. It's the most logical way.
The music is unnecessarily creepy. You weren't producing a horror movie.
Superb effort, chapeau! Out of interest, what was front light was he using?
What brand tires you rode in. Thank you.
Hutchinson Blackbirds :) (in a 32c i believe)
Used mine in earnest for the first time this week. Could be the best piece of accessory kit I’ve ever bought!
so pleased to hear, thanks for the positive feedback! :)
Hi Restrap... I know this video is a couple of years old now, but I'm wondering if I can use the large bag with a Redshift stem? Wondering if anyone has had any problems???
I spoke at length with Eric from Redshift when we came to Sea Otter last year and apparently there is no issues with their products and added weight of bags. I am yet to try it but not heard anything negative, hope this helps! :)
Here is what you REALLY need to know: 1. Get on any bike. (you dont need a gravel bike) 2. Ride on a gravel track
Wow! Great effort Josh, and the film crew, such an enjoyable 15-minute watch. Subscribed! May I ask, what front light is Josh using here?
He's using an Exposure Strada (Y)
Sounds like a good challenge, regardless of start point. With Leeds just under 400km from my house, my North race will pretty much end at your factory door. If i make it in 24 hours (brief Google check says 22 hours cycling), can i at least get a sticker? Extra context, I'm 54, overweight, and last years London to Brighton is the furthest I've ever ridden!
Hey Jon, it has to start from our factory!
@@Restrapltd I'm trying to be green and cycle from my home in Somerset to the factory. Will get train home. Otherwise, I'll have to train/drive 400km to your factory, then cycle 400k north, then drive/ train 800k home again. Plus, I was only hoping on a sticker! 😜
@@jon_underscore Hey Jon, We actually don't have any stickers, but if you turn up then we will give you a patch or something! :D
@Restrapltd I'll do my best. I'm long overdue a daft but memorable self challenge! It'll be great if you do find a patch, I promise to sew it onto my canister bag 🤜🤛👍
Very cool. Truly epic accomplishment.
Looks massively complicated
Great to see you have discovered the magic of Win Wing mudguards...
This was valuable. Thanks! I'm trying to decide between a gravel and a MTB.
Got mine last week. As a broader chest/backed chap I appreciate the sizing and adjustment, it doesn’t feel or look like a bra 😂 Had a DJI mini, controller and spare batteries in the main compartment fit nicely and no bounce. Question the phone pocket having a key strap/loop in it, will probably cut that out. If you cinch the load lifters down the the pull loops have a tendency to hit your head/helmet when you look left or right. 10/10 though, points are just personal nit picking.
Great to hear your feedback! We're glad you like it :)
As a valuables pocket over a phone pocket, it just totally depends on your usage! You might rather have keys and money in there and your phone somewhere else. We wanted it to fit phones because that will be the likely use for most.
I did 320 miles unsupported in 24 hours with just a saddle bag and a few bottles lol
That is awesome, Josh did 313 unsupported with just a top tube and a hydration vest :D
😍😍😍😍😍
well done excellent ride and with no sleep.
Great video. Clever concept. Do you mind sharing a kitlist?
Anyone know if Northface is still woke? Such a big fail trying to fit into evil ideology when your business is making clothing.
Incredible achievement super smooth video and stunning scenery! Thank you I really enjoyed watching.
so dramatic 🤪nice scenery tho.
A nice summer's day would make a big difference. Well done JR
I would like to buy one of these frame bags but I’m unsure whether I should get the 1.5l or 2l, because of size. Is the 49cm length provided on the website for the 2l version referring to the total length of the bag(straps included) or the length of the bottom panel of the bag itself? I have a canyon grizl cf sl 8 in size small.
The length is the bag itself so where the base of it ends.
Obviously June/July/August would be a somewhat easier time to try the challenge with the extra daylight hours and less chance of cold weather and icy roads. It may not, however, be quite so inspiring. Bravo!
I dunno ... some pretty stunning places in the North to inspire riders - usually verdant countryside bathed in peak Summer sun near a body of water of some kind. There's a reason The Lakes, Peaks and Dales are heaving with cyclists around that time!
You won't see a haggis on the roads in the Borders. Need to head to the Trossachs or Argyle.
Hi. What kind of jacket you are wearing the in video? The yellow one? Thx
Well Done Josh Mental Effort and brilliant Video.
Very nice challenge and video
Amazing film. Curious to know what rain jacket he uses? 😅
Josh is sponsored by Café du Cycliste
great film. Why didnt he ride for the full 24 hrs?
he spent too long appreciating the view at the castle and ran out of time. gives you a bit more of a chance to beat him :D
I’d love to be that fit. Next life!
Beautifully filmed, excellent work.
Really hoping these come back this year
being made as we speak :D
@@Restrapltd What a timing!
Me and my dad are the cyclists at the beginning! Fair one Josh an epic day out 🫡
So glad you found the video!
You gave us a good laugh when we found your audio in the edit 😂 "You must be mad aren't you"
😂😂
cracking video, Josh is a mad rider huge respect to him! See you at restrap HQ in the autumn for some storm surfing
Wish we'd known. Only live 15 minutes away. You deserved a reception committee. Well done. Tremendous effort. Hope you're proud.
Excellent video and marketing at its best. Well done all.
Epic..
question: my CamelBak keeps the fluid cold for ages even on a hot day on my back, how does yours keep the bladder cool? thanks
This is a really nice film. Good job all round. I'd rather be filming than riding that's for sure!
Why on earth would you be sprinting out of corners in the very beginning of such a ride..??
Josh can't help it, too much fun
I mounted side release cages when I added a half frame bag as shown in the picture. It is a brilliant solution, works great with my wife's small frame MTB as she was having trouble pulling the bottle straight up
Great video! What are the shoes worn at 0:09?
Legendary effort 🙌 so beautifully captured. & really appreciated the time date location popup cues 🥂 kudos & ride on
Good effort 👏. Am curious about the race vest - does it not put extra weight on spine and sit bones especially on such a long ride?
It is surprisingly comfortable and the weight distribution sits high up on the back to prevent issues. Also the longer you use it.. the less food and water is in it ;)
great soundtrack!
