✨ for the record - I know it goes on a little bit after the last bind, but since I catch out of frame I just wanted to be clear that the yoyo did wind up. Hope that's ok.

Justin Dauer 1st place nationals
you gotta do a personal best tricks/combos from famous freestyles vid. i would eat that up in its entirety. i'd be like oh nooo im too full off this michael ferdico tier list video. #facts
Jensen 2010
With the crazy horizontal jump trick
Now a new contender had arrived : Ryuichi Nakamura 2023
Hajime Miura world 2018 4a final ending, no other moment even comes close to me. I was there and the building almost imploded
Connor were you the official 2020 1A champion??
Yuuki '09 was the freestyle that I watched the most in my early years. I missed my flight to 2010 nationals and was devastated, though it was the best thing to happen because I wasn't ready for Sebby's level and I came back determined. Fun fact: I took a nap for about 30 minutes before I got called on stage. The stars aligned and I'm forever grateful. Love you, Ferdi!
I agree 👍💯👍
Just found your channel, please do this again with another division cause it was sick to get some context into this sport I am slowly delving deeper into!
thank you for watching, glad you enjoyed!! other divisions would be pretty difficult, unfortunately - i don't know quite as much of the history or have the same intuition, and also so many of them have one or two really dominant players so there are a lot fewer names to talk about, which i think makes for a pretty different kind of video. i do want to cover the X divisions SOMEHOW eventually, though, so definitely keep your eyes peeled (and i'm not ruling out tier lists entirely :P)
Gentry stein is the best ❤
a tru legend
hiroyuki 2006 has to be the goat
definitely up there, it's so hard to choose between all of the S+ routines 😭
Man, your understanding of the CONTEXT adds so much to these videos. I love it so much.
you can't imagine the joy it brings me to get your stamp of approval 🥹 my 11 year old self would literally cry knowing this
Ando 08 is my GOAT fs as well! Also coincidentally the GOAT freestyle pick from a lot of other National and World champs I know. Zach’s routine is a strong contender for GOAT, though I think that was a little after my generation, so I’m biased. I don’t think anyone will ever win again with that innovative and alll around good of a trick set. Gentry I can’t and don’t want to judge cause I love him so much and I’m too close to it. And it goes bigger than rankings. But it’s so good to see his name in the conversation. Yuuki is one of my favorite players, easily in my all time GOAT players list, though I feel like his 07 routine was more of a time and place kind of thing and doesn’t age as well as some other classics. Like I feel like he’s one of the few players where he had so much more potential left in him in terms of routines. It wouldn’t be my personal GOATed routine, though I think Jensen’s is one of the few that hold up just as good on the day it was performed as it does today.
love the personal element you include with all of your takes, but more than anything i feel like it just confirms that you can't go wrong. we have an incredible slate of world champions, truly a blessed sport/game/hobby/toy/whatever!
Hot take warning. I think that Zach gormley's 2012 worlds routine is better than his nats routine
i'm gonna be real with you, that's scalding 🤪 the energy in that routine is infectious but the leap he made just a couple months later is too historic
This is what we NEED
we need to see you at every contest!
Zach Gormley 2012 is, was, and always will be the GOD freestyle of all US Nationals freestyles. I can't tell you how many times I've sat back and watched it on repeat, especially as a young teenager first experiencing yoyos for the first time. It has everything from smooth tech tricks, to a catchy soundtrack, to choreography only Zach is capable of, and beyond. There's not one thing I'd change about it (not even the 3 negative clicks as he left the stage).
I really like your rankings in the tier list. However, I'm going to have to politely disagree with your GOAT pick. John Ando's 08 freestyle was special, but I feel like it just didn't age as well as some of the others. For me, the undisputed GOAT freestyle is Jensen 2010. It's just perfect in every way, stood the test of time, and even though I didn't start yoyoing until 2013, I will always find time to go back and re-watch it over and over. I'd maybe even go so far as to say it was the greatest freestyle of all time, though I do have a soft spot for Zach's 2012 nationals freestyle.
Jensen is a totally legit pick, and i think there is a lot of personal value and philosophy that goes into the choice. it makes me happy to know that people do think so highly of routines that happened before they even started, though - i really do think the history of yo is important and that's part of why i'm trying to document some small slice of it
Coincidentally Ando is Jensen’s personal pick for GOAT yoyo. I love waxing poetic with Jensen and others about Ando’s yoyoing. It’s a past time within a past time.
I’m a Marcus 2011 hater and would give the nod to Zach/Yuuki over Ando but I see where you’re coming from. Also another Mickey 2006 man of culture is always appreciated
i mean, i can't just make EVERY video Yuuki propaganda... or wait, can i? i definitely appreciate your thoughts because i know you're also a real OG and probably understand a lot of things that i'm not even aware of. picking between mickey 05 and 06 was maybe the hardest part of the whole list so thank you for the validation 🙏
10:56-11:04 I saw you said "science can't explain" the trick. But I can. I figured it out
Also would love to see the other 9
the honest truth is that i included that bit to try and trick people into learning some John Ando tricks. i'm sorry to mislead but i hope that it was a worthwhile experience 🙏
Thank you
thank YOU!
Loved the vid Ferdico! Really agree with the nod to Hiroyuki Suzuki 2006 FS, that was personally my GOAT FS. But everyone else was also so good, ranking the 1a World Champions is no easy task, so much talent in the game.
i still have that footage from when i interviewed you at PNWR :P might turn that into a short to post one of these days! but either way i had to do that routine justice, as much as i was debating which was better between 05 and 06. at the end of the day i think the rankings really only serve to generate discussion and get people thinking about what they like and value, and if anyone REALLY disagrees i hope they use it as motivation to get into the content game themselves hahaha
I feel like Mickey 04 and 05 might’ve had more polish, but Mickey 06 had the most brilliance of any of his routines. And some truly iconic moments.
Loving the videos, i appreciate how much work goes into the editing and your passion for talking about the history i may not have been there to catch. I love the tier lists and the freestyles i get to watch after as homework, it really transports me to the time and place when all these iconic moments came from!
🥹 thank you so much, comments like these are exactly why i do it
great content as always, mr. ferdico; very much agree w the ando fs as being the GOAT (sidenote: you're almost at 1k subs :D)
i'm glad someone understands, that definitely shows in your style ✨ and of course thank you for the support, we made it!!
I feel like with Mir, he actually could be a lot better- but not in the way like, he's not a good player already? It's so hard to try and explain I feel like it's something to do with the technical side of his tricks, like he's almost robotic- I think the way I can verbalise it best is the connection of energy and flow between his tricks and the audience. There's no denying he's one of if not the most accurate, risky and downright insane player to ever exist, but I feel like there's some room for artistry there still. I think the best player I can compare to from worlds is Yuki Nishisako's performance at WYYC 2019. The way his tricks have a perfect balance of technicality and density without being boring to watch (or rather, the difficulty is easy to appreciate from a viewers perspective- I see a lot of dense tech around that, to me as a player I know how difficult it is and it's very impressive, but visually it can not seem as exciting as it is hard to perform, if that makes sense?) mixed with huge elements that involve a lot of space, and flow. The flow he has between different elements and the performance as a whole tells a story, and while it got 3rd, it was definitely my favourite fs from that year. Mir's tricks are ground breaking, but at the same time I feel as though they aren't? (Well, some definitely are of course, but not in the way some other players have done it). I think the culmination of the sheer accuracy and risk he hits his tricks is what makes it in the overall performance- but then again it's so hard to explain because I could say the opposite too, the individual tricks are what makes it good rather than the performance as a whole?? I think it's like his 2023 fs was a lot of tricks done one after the other, I feel like it didn't quite have the story element to it that makes it one of the all time greats (in my personal opinion of course). I think a good comparison is to Shion, where his performance was very risky and impressive, but as a whole it's like the routine didn't tell a story so I couldn't quite connect to it as an audience member compared to other routines (like Yuki Nishisako 2019 for example). I don't want anyone to think this is me talking bad about him, I definitely didn't explain this very well haha There's no denying he's one of the greatest players right now in terms of physical ability, agility, consistency and accuracy. He could (and will) get so much better in the years to come, I feel once he competes on stage more he will be even more unstoppable in more aspects once he gains more experience out there.
i appreciate the well thought out comment! i probably could have phrased my thoughts better in the video, but to me i think of someone like Hajime: he was extraordinarily technically gifted for a very long time, but it was only around 2018-2019 that he really unlocked something that made him CLEARLY on a different level not just from other 3A or 4A players, but from everyone else who's ever touched a yoyo. in Mir i see that same spark of talent, and i really believe that he will ascend in the same way if he keeps at it. so much of the creativity, artistry, and presentation just can't be brute forced in the same way that technical difficulty can, and i really enjoy watching the development and trajectory of that as players get older. and of course, no shade or disrespect to Mir; this is the kind of conversation it doesn't even make sense to have without agreeing that he's the most technically gifted 1A player we've ever seen by a decent margin! the comparison and contrast to Shion and Yuki is very interesting to me - absolutely not the players that i would think of to use as examples, but i can definitely see what you mean. this really is a beautifully infinite hobby 🥹
This guy needs to go viral
🥹 thank u for the vote of confidence, i appreciate the comment
@@Bird.MP3 your welcome my man!
the 2a video will need 1 guy at the top, 3 empty categories, then everyone else
Shu!!!!!
@@tristanbunke1228 shinji, bro won the 2a division 12 times
@PandasAreCooI think he's won 9 times but I get what you mean. I wasn't sure if he is considered the best or not since they weren't as recent as shu. And the game is always improving. Who are your division goats, 1a-5a??
@@tristanbunke1228 He did win the combined division several times though which according to the yoyo wiki used to be a division where you would be considered a world champion if you won it so I guess he could technically have 13 world titles but I think your still right
i'm not sure if i'm qualified enough to speak on the other divisions, or at least that's the excuse i'm using so that i don't have to make the calls between players like is happening in these comments :P
Another vid, YESSS!!!! Also can you do some tutorials on your tricks, tricks like varsword and your thumb grind step over still hold up in the cool and epicness factor (s tier)
it's definitely something i'm interested in but i'm unsure if i have the equipment and space to film them well... we'll see, it does help knowing which tricks people would actually want to see though!
I'm gonna compete at worlds
i hope it was a great experience!
Beautifully explained! I'm glad you felt the same way about that 2012 national win, has to be my favourite of all time!
Really enjoyed this video!
thank you, glad to hear it!!

truly one of a kind 🥇
How was I not subbed to you?!?! lol
Great video 👏 I wish they would hold Nationals outdoors again like they did before for so many years.
it's definitely a vibe for the videos but i think the competitors would disagree :P
Keep going ,I agree
I literally know nothing about yoyo, but damn was this was a great video!
wow! thank you for stopping by, that's literally the best thing you could say to me 🥹
I’d throw Jensen’s 2010 and 2011 worlds on here too
I learned so much from this video. Plz more!
coming soon!
Yuuki 2005 God Tier for me on raw talent alone. I’m tempted to say 2009 instead, because he was more polished and had better style. But 2005 he is the year he showed up at Worlds and almost won with a routine he essentially made up on the spot. So 2005 has my heart. 2007 had the gold but I think 2005 and 2009 were peak Yuuki. Even now, I don’t think anyone is close to Yuuki in terms of raw invention - he just breathes it. And Zach 2012 for God Tier if we’re talking overall!
awesome to hear perspective from legend 💪 2005 yuuki brings me to such a different time, but i totally understand where you're coming from. the fact that he has so many distinct eras really adds to the mystique of all of them
