The Best FIRST Car for Enthusiasts (You're Picking the Wrong Car)
My 6MT M3 arrived a week ago… my first manual! And I’m already trying to learn heel toe lol. Thanks for the vid, very helpful
No problem! Congrats on the new car!
Please lower the music in future videos. Thank you for the video though.
Will do. Thanks for the input and thank you for watching!
i do'n't wear shoes just bare foot
I mean, you do get the best pedal feel with barefoot driving lol
Jesus boots works well. I love my flip flop heel toes
can i ask what brand and model is your impact wrench? I need to replace some wheel studs on my 22 BRZ - tire shop over tightened, I think they're cross threaded, so I'm looking for a not too heavy impact wrench.
It’s a Makita XWT15Z. Kind of on the pricey side, but I think the auto slow feature is nice and worth it so it doesn’t over do it.
But are you double clutching like you should?
Granny shifting is the way brotherrrr 🤘👵🏽🤘
ngl i thought it was gonna be a dji osmo pocket vid and my guy busted out the freddiew full frame gimbal w a harness 😅
Haha definitely thought about picking up an osmo pocket for this. Less anxiety from a safety standpoint. lol
super super super SUPER nitpick but you are catching the revs with the clutch on their way up (from what i can see in the video), for the smoothest "nicest" on your bushing rev match you want to catch them on the way down so a slight overblip and just as the rpms start to fall catch them and engage the clutch smoothly, nice video 👍
I’ll definitely give it a try! I always thought catching on the revs up would reduce wear because the flywheel and clutch would “accelerate” rotationally in the same direction and speed.
@@LEEMWEEZY As long as you dont get a kick in the butt or lurch forward it probably doesn't matter, its like a 500ms difference between when the clutch disc rpm changes and when you re-engage the clutch and your vehicle speed changes about 2mph which means the clutch is actually decelerating by the time you begin to release the clutch pedal an overblip of a maybe 100-200 rpm gives you that 500ms delay to complete the downshift and start engaging the clutch at the exact right rpm, hopefully that makes sense
No that makes complete sense. Thank you.
Thats cool! My first car (and manual) was a red GR86 as well!
Good choice! Red was unfortunately not available in my area
My honda fit foot pedals are so close i can't do a heel toe😂
Someone else in the comments had the same issue actually
One of the better demonstrations of heel and toe downshifting I've seen on YT, very well done Sir! Only issue is for us vertically enhanced folks where our long legs (36" inseam) are splayed outside around the steering wheel and our right foot toe cannot be rotated to the left without rotating the rest of our leg to the left which is blocked by the steering wheel. Instead I have to brake with the left side of my oversized foot and rotate the right side of my foot to blip the throttle. It's very tricky to get right... +1 on the shoe recommendation. I've switched to skateboarding shoes now for driving which help a ton.
Thank you! Haha I’m a staggering 5’6” and when first learning, I was experimenting with how far my body should be from the wheel. So I definitely understand the limitations. Luckily for my height, I guess I fit the demographic for a small Japanese 2+2 coupe lol. I have seen people actually get a small extension for the accelerator pedal. Maybe that may solve your issue by not having to rotate the foot as much by effectively having the brake and gas pedal closer together. Side note: I’ve been meaning to try some old pair of Vans, but I can’t seem to get away from the Converse.
Great review!
best video that I have watched on heel toe downshifting. Good insert with white shoes.
Thank you for watching!
tell her to put it in 2nd and then once she puts the pedal to the floor throw it back in automatic
Do you all wiggle your sticks to see if they're in neutral 🤣 i agree though Jubbal is full of 💩 driven all of them and GT86 & GR86 is like Chris Harris quotes a 10 10ths car. MX5 felt like a boat and the S2K steering was awful, i had no trust pushing it and was twitch as hell with an engine which only comes alive when thrashing it..
All the time 😂
@@LEEMWEEZY😂😂👍
Agreed, Jubbal is full of shit sometimes and some of the stuff he says is kinda rude imo
@@JimmyDShea don't want to go on a bashing of Jubbal but have you seen his driving style! What's with all the sawing at the wheel whilst going into curves 🤣🤦♂️ this is why you have to take these youtube car reviews with a pinch of salt lol. I agree he's rude and comes off quite boastful..
Thanks for this video! Going to try installing my 15mm spacer with 2.5 arp studs this weekend
Nice! Yeah 15mm is probably the way to go with the 2.5 inch studs. I also heard some people have had luck squeezing in 3 inch studs on without removing the axle nut. Something I may experiment with in the future.
can u make more manual content, my dad has a manual zl1 and im tryna learn how to get better driving it.
I got you.
Next video on manual stuff probably going to be granny shifting vs double clutch. And after that, basic rev matching.
Great tips. Especially the shoes!
It was the biggest inhibitor to me learning. After a while, I learned how to do it comfortably with any other shoe.
At 77 am i too old to enjoy this car 🚗? Will i look foolish?
I don’t think you’d look foolish driving this car! Whether or not you’d enjoy it, just depends on your lifestyle. There’s not too much room in the car for your typical outdoorsy type. But it makes for a great weekender car if you enjoy the looks and driving dynamics.
Only those who would rather drive a car “that lacks steering feel” is foolish, especially if the ride comfort is already sacrificed. Trust me, younger generations are more likely to be this foolish. One pathetic car is the Alfa 4C -- manual steering that still lacks feel!
Love it! I’m planning to buy the exact one but with burnt tips for my 2014 brz. Where did you buy yours? I was looking at one like yours with the stainless steel tips at subimods but I don’t know where to find it exactly, let me know please!
I bought mine from 86speed! Subiemods looks like they have it for your model year with the burnt tips! These are both good and reputable websites.

the driver diff is crazy
need to swap them bases for some premi's great vid!
Thanks for watching! Glad you liked the video. I actually wanted a premium, but a base was all I could find…
I drove a stock 2019 BRZ PP that seems to have better steering sharpness/directness than my 2023 GR86 Premium (stock or after Tein H Tech with camber bolts). Did you notice any difference in the FRS vs GR steering?
I felt exactly what you did. Although I haven’t lowered my car yet nor added camber tho. The GR86’s steering is just too light, but it’s still precise and a good ratio.
Does "heel toe downshifting" cause brake pads completely wear off? How often do you need to change your brake pads?
Good question. Heel toe downshift should actually prolong your brake pads. Remember, you only need to heel toe when you’re slowing down. When you rev match into a lower gear, you actually use some engine braking as well. If you just cruise in neutral and brake, you’re using all brakes with no help from the engine.
@@LEEMWEEZY Wow, thanks for the info.
You don’t use any more breaks than if you weren’t to rev match at all. You only heel toe when you’re braking to slow down already.
you're essentially sharing braking force with the engine and brakes so it should actually put a little less wear on the breaks at the cost of slightly more gas. the other upside i can think of is when traffic starts moving again you're already in gear and less work is needed to get moving
Around 10,000kms - 15,000kms 😅
Sports car is the same things as going to the gym and gaining muscle. Only other men will appreciate it. 😂
I already got my girl! So of course I went and got a sports car so other men can compliment me 😂
Only a manual steering has the intensity of saltwater fishing. I'm still keeping an 1984 Jetta coupe (GTI with a trunk).
interesting.. I have a similar setup. just recently got the 3'' arp studs and 20mm spacers. I will see how this fits after installing them. if im not comfortable with the amount of thread left, I might try a smaller size spacer. maybe a 15mm?
I think that should work perfect. I kept the 2.5 inch studs on and installed 12mm spacers. To be honest, I could’ve gone 15mm with the current set up. But if you’re doing 3 inch studs, I think you’re golden with 20mm.
Even smoother heel toe is to double clutch. The reason is the engine revs up faster in neutral vs with the clutch depressed. Also a good thing to mention is that your rev match changes depending on how hard you brake and the differential between the speed you end up at and the gear you go into. A bad rev match can be less efficient than just dropping the gear after you’ve slowed down
double clutch is quite a bit outdated atp with relatively "modern" synchromesh transmissions, its definitely smoother but for the most part its not needed unless skipping gears (double clutch rev matching every down shift is a massive flex though 😂) also the engine is effectively in neutral with the clutch disengaged the reason its smoother is because when you let the clutch out in neutral all the synchros reset before going into the next gear which is why if you want to skip gears going down you should double clutch it EG 5-neutral-3
ayyy yessir love the edits man tysm for the help too!
lmao I just realized I said "pan in" I think it's dolly in LMAO
Thank you guys again 🔥
Some cars don't lend themselves well to heel-and-toe outside the track. Pedal spacing is the main concern, but sometimes it's the brake pedal itself being over-servoed and making consistent pedal pressure hard without unintentionally upsetting the car with more brake. This is the case with my Honda Jazz (Fit). I've campaigned it on time attacks and heel-toe is much easier on track. By contrast, on the road it's too easy to suddenly introduce more brake than intended while rolling onto the throttle to blip. Anyway good video and agreed on Chucks being great driving shoes.
Ahh I see. I can definitely see that being an issue. Hard braking on track would go through the full range of motion of the pedal, making it easier to heel toe. Whereas if the brake pedal is already touchy and sensitive at the top, it’d be hard to heel toe safely on the road. Thank you for the input. And thanks for watching the video! I’ll probably ask you for track tips soon.
Meanwhile my 2001 clio has perfect pedals and brakes for heel-toe. Just weird
Honestly I’ve given up trying to heel toe my GT86. In normal road driving I just can’t reach the gas pedal while on the brakes without jerking the car around. I’m six foot and it’s just not feasible with the positioning of the pedals. Maybe when I get the little extension that raises my throttle a little higher but until then it’s not worth it to add into my daily driving routine.
Is your foot hitting the side wall? I can see if you’re tall enough, your knee being bent despite sliding the seat all the way back can cause some problems. Try doing more of a roll with the side of your foot until you get an extension? Sorry, it’s hard to help when I can’t physically see or simulate what you’ve been experiencing.
If she rode in mine. She be trying to breathe. Love mine. 2023 premium GR86
SHE BREAKING ALL CAR ENTHUSIASTS HEARTS
Great explanations and great video. In track mode you can't see your revs blipping at the lower revs well Loving the phone mount ;)
Thank you, Kevin! Yeah I probably should’ve kept the standard gauge since I wasn’t keeping RPMs high enough. But you can hear me tapping that throttle into the floor to try and get revs up 😅 Honestly, the phone mount you gave me is an underrated interior mod. I was just gonna suffer with putting it in the cup holder until you saved me 😂
Nice rumble from the MXP!
Best bang for buck catback in my opinion!
I like your video. 👍🏼. I also own a GR86 and I agree to everything you said about it. It is the most fun car I have ever had. But, man, I am worried about your relationship if you don't dump your GR86......😂
Glad someone understands the FUN factor. Lol it’s okay. I purposefully told her to be as harsh as possible in this video. She really doesn’t mind it. If it really bothered her, she would never get in it every weekend. 😂 She’s happy the car makes me happy and that’s all that matters.
@@LEEMWEEZY 7:45 Driver wants steering feel, while passenger(s) wants comfort. Oh well, almost all cars can only do either one, or even none! Some dude with wife/kid had to get rid off his Scion FR-S manual (which already got more steering feel than the newer-design “smoother & less-noisy” GR86:czcams.com/video/FL6RFA_AFKI/video.html ). Then when he test drove my mint-condition 1999 E36 coupe manual, he wanted to buy it from me so badly. I can see why -- more (hydraulic assisted) steering feel, more ride comfort, more quietness, more low-end torque (due to 2.8 inline-6), more interior room, more compact exterior (only 5'7" wide) while still providing more rear visibility width (more convenient for passing), plus the added Torsen differential. It's a comfy pampering sporty-feeling car that also comes with a tilt-able sunroof (to vent out hot air above your forehead....)!
Everyone that gets in my car says the same thing about the sh*t handle 🤣
Haha something I totally understand. I had a friend who’s an experienced track driver whip the car around, and I was grabbing for something that wasn’t there. LOL
i had an frs for 4 years and i will say that it's SLOW AS FUCCCCK so when the new 86 was out i was in the market in getting one then i thought.. do i really wanna drive this slow shit again? so i got a 24 supra 3.0 prem instead
As someone’s who has driven all three, Supra is definitely faster. But the new gen 86 is at least able to press you into the back seats throughout the whole rev range vs the FRS. I totally understand getting something a little different though.
Maybe if I had an extra 20-25k.. I'd get a Supra.. lol..
shit you want to talk about slow? I had z32 2+2. Heavy as fuck and only around 222HP same as this gr86 😅. At least the GR86 is light as fuck. Just skeptical about the engine in the gr86 is what keeping me from buying it. The last RWD car this size with a back seat and WEIGHT sold in the US before the frs and gr86 , is the s14. being around 2700-2800lbs is no joke while rwd sport cars today are pushing 3300lbs+. GR86 has smaller tires as well, so they are much cheaper to run through. For the price of a supra, u can get 2 gr86's. One to fuck around and drift and crash in, and one to cruise in 😁. Not everyone has the balls to push their car knowing they will someday crash it. I could afford to crash a gr86, but i can't afford to crash a supra 😅
@@mosswine5417everything you said is what has crossed my mind when buying the car. Lol. Especially your thoughts on the engine. Since I consider this a forever car, the good thing about Subie engines blowing up all the time is that there’s always a company to replace them and make them better 😂. And I was offered a manual Supra allocation when looking for this car, but couldn’t justify double the price. Glad we think alike.
@@LEEMWEEZY Agree, but the slower FR-S got more steering feel than the GR86 ( czcams.com/video/FL6RFA_AFKI/video.html ), which still isn't as bad as the “fast but numb-steering” stiff-riding Supra ( czcams.com/video/3sDzlSlEvb0/video.html )
I mean, that’s just having a small car it’s for having fun, drifting and racing. If one wanted something “practical” you can get a 4 door, big trunk lol Supra is a small car as well and it’ll make your wallet hurt.
I couldn’t justify 2x the price for a little bit more fun out of a car. When set up properly, this car can keep up with a Supra without power mods on the track.
@@LEEMWEEZY true. I agree. Supra is nice and everything but I own the 86 and it’s still a boss most people confuse the 2 anyways 😂. Use the extra money you saved for mods and a nice dinner out.. or save it.
If you don't mind a 2-decade old car, the 2005 IS300 with LSD got 4 doors (but no fold-down rear seats).
GF likes the looks of the Supra more than the GR86? Interesting, I feel the opposite. The Supra has way too many cuts/vents. But it’s definitely more of a showstopper to the average person. After renting a Supra for canyon runs/DD, the engine is amazing though.
The 86 definitely isn’t an engine first kind of car. But I agree with the styling. Too many fake vents in the Supra. Stock for stock, Supra looks more appealing to the general public.
I think she just likes the STI cuz it’s more roomy
"Should've gotten a supra" lol. But in all honesty, GR86 is a good beginner car especially if you're trying to learn manual and get into the car scene. Me personally, I would go GR Corolla if I'm going to go manual and then keep my Supra automatic. GR Corolla is just so much fun in manual and Supra has all the power you want in a sports car.
The GR Corolla is better in numbers and practicality for sure. But the GR86 is definitely a better car to become a better driver on an entry level. I was offered a manual Supra while in my search for this car. But I couldn’t justify the price. Glad you’re enjoying your Supra!
haha! I have been through this exact situation. I love my 86, the revs, the feel, but my gf absolutely does not see it through my pov😂
My dream car.
Great video man - thanks for taking the time to help us with the process. Seems really straightforward. So what do you think? Think you'll go 15mm all around or get 3" lugs?
I actually went with 12mm spacers all around. And with that I can lock in 13 threads. (New video next week). 15mm def would’ve been doable, but I didn’t want to make another costly mistake because these are non returnable. You only need 9.6 turns to properly engage this thread pitch safely. (12 divided by 1.25)
Lol 8:00 I'll tell you right now no one is fitting in the back. The back is just an open extension of the trunk disguised as back seats
Yeah. When I fit even my shortest friends, I tell them to take their shoes off to be more comfortable. Pretty much backpack storage lol
Awesome video bro! The car is amazing. Also, where are the sunglasses from?
Thanks! And believe it or not I got it off Amazon. Came in a 3 pack. Pretty cheap too lol
haha, My wife also gets car sick in my gr86... the only car she have ever gotten car sick in
I’d like to think it’s because of the car’s sharp handling. 😂
Sound like she would like the look of the the new 11th gen Honda. Slightly less sporty compared to the 10th. With the comfortable seats and decent interior size and switch nobs sound like she like the sporty with more of a luxury look with space. I have one but I love your car much more lol. My next car will be something like yours
I think she’d like that more too. But to be honest, her “small car” complaint is anything less than the size of a Crossover/SUV. But cars like this are a dying breed. So if you can get your next car as a RWD manual like this, I don’t think you’d regret it.
Naturally aspirated Civic (hatchback) with manual is being discontinued as of now! I'm not collecting one because I hate the hatch's narrow rear visibility.
