I have been drawn to being outdoors my entire life. Being couped up indoors doesn’t sound like fun to me. I will be trying to bring fishing, hunting and outdoor skills to this channel.

It’s been a rough summer of fishing for me. I finally had a good day on the water. Nothing big but very enjoyable.

Got another pattering test with the Steven’s 301 20 gauge. This time I’m doing the stock choke against a new Carlson’s Long Beard XR choke .568 constriction. She’ll used for this test are Herter’s 3 inch TSS. #stevens301 #herters #carlsons

REM 870 with Winchester Long Beard XR #6

Today I’m shooting a Remington 870 Express. It has a Carlson’s Long Beard choke installed. The constriction is .650. Ammo of choice is the Long Beard XR Magnum #6 shot. I’m shooting a pattern at 45 yards and at 30 yards. I believe that 45 yards is a long shot for a shotgun and 30 yards is a normal distance for turkey hunting. First time shooting the Steven’s 301 20 gauge using herters TSS 9 shot
I run abu Garcia 7000 they have never faild me got a new diawa saltist 50 going to try out next weekend
I really liked this guy, and the video. I like this gun as well and share the same concerns especially the the front swivel and factory sight. I don't like that the swivel turns. I was very impressed with the Herters ammo and will have to try it. Let us know how the blueing goes. Good job.

Where are you paddling? I’m in KC area and have a new fishing kayak, looking for some good floats.
Not near KC. This is in Franklin County in Union, MO.
Did these ever come with a 16 inch barrel? If not, what are the downsides of having a ratty example restored with a cut down barrel length?
I would love to think I would never have a bird hang up at more than 35 yards. I hunt a lot of fields and open grassy areas, so longer shots are my norm. In my past years of turkey hunting, I have used this very same shotgun, choke, and shells, only in the #5 size shot, and the gun topped with a DiamondPro scope. I have harvested birds at 62, 61, 57, and most recently 47 yards. Drop and flop, no runway on any of them. Due to some medical issues, I purchased a Stevens Model 301 in .410 bore, shooting Apex Ninja TSS and have taken four birds with that gun, averaging right at 40 yards per shot. Honestly, that .410 TSS drops them harder than the Long Beards. (But I guess it should….$7.50 per shell)

@StayingOutdoors I bet we were friends then, was your name Scott if I recall correctly. Regardless I am pretty sure we used to shoot compound bows together a couple times and eat steaks.

We probably did then. I was a biology major. Wish my memory was better.
Follow-up, Nick was able to kill his first turkey this year. He used the Steven’s 20 gauge with the Herter’s TSS.
I use the same gun with the factory choke. I use Apex ammunition 1 5/8 ounce load of #9 TSS shot. It shoots great at 50 yards. I hope you have a great hunting season!
