Cumberland Falls, also known as The Niagara of the South, is a waterfall that is on average 120 feet wide and 65 feet tall. The water flow changes depending on the amount of rainfall in the surrounding area. This area was almost transformed into a hydropower dam, which would have diverted all of the water away from Cumberland Falls. We have Thomas Coleman DuPont to thank for making it possible to preserve this area for current and future generations to enjoy.
Cumberland Falls is famous for a "Moonbow" that occurs here every month around the full moon. The visibility of the Moonbow is weather dependent, however there is also a rainbow that appears here every single sunny day.
Did you know that this area used to be under an ancient ocean? This is ancient ocean is responsible for the various sandstone formations that we have in this area, including the waterfall. This diverse landscape is one of the most biodiverse areas in the United States for plant and animals!
There are many fun things to do here at Cumberland Falls including, gem mining, horseback riding, hiking, and many other recreational opportunities that can be found at the front desk of the DuPont Lodge.
