    Oh wow, I've been listening to your podcasts for quite a while, but for some reason haven never seen your CZcams channel until now. It's great to put a face to the voice I've heard for so long. One of these days I'd love to sail with you guys. I'll have to look at your itinerary. I have family in Karlskrona that I've never visited. Maybe I can somehow combine the two activities at some point. Cheers!

    Another great podcast gents. Lots of good examples of sailing at night and I especially enjoyed the bits on the English Channel having been brought up as a very small child crossing from England in all weathers visibility and from the late 60,s so pre gps and the magical AIS days. My must have piece of equipment was a hand bearing compass always dangling around my neck to enable course and position checks and judging whether ships would go behind or in front of you day and night. I still believe that being able to navigate and sail by sight feel and calculation is so much more rewarding than just following what the electronics tell you to do, though I don't blame people to not bother as it seems so much easier.

    I can't agree more that it's of interest to look at the predicted conditions for your area, but it's almost more important... may be more important, to understand what drives that local climate and wind condition. Northern California is actually fairly predictable IF you understand the broader pacific patterns. For that area specifically, the challenge isn't low pressure systems, but rather high pressure systems that compress against the coast. So you're actually not worried as much about lows, but a big high that doesn't come ashore and lingers off the coast. For those who pay attention to those broader patterns, you can actually stretch a forecast to 4-5 days of confidence, even if not certainty.

  • @kankama1
    @kankama1 Před 8 měsíci

    Its great to hear you work out the validity of forecasts, thanks for that. One thing though, climate science deals with generalities, much like seasonal differences, and it is scientifically valid to make predictions about general trends, even if those trends have variation within them. However it is much harder to produce detailed forecasts, which are the ones us sailors are interested in.

  • @martyhill6609
    @martyhill6609 Před 8 měsíci

    The old sailors used to say “Mares' tails and fish scales" - "Carry low sails". Horse tails and patchy cirrocumulus signal that a rain storm is on its way. the other one I rely on is "Red Sky at Night, Sailors Delight" - "Red Sky in the Morning, Sailor take Warning". Or better yet use barometer as August suggested.

  • @hernia01

    Great talk guys! Firecrackers ARE the way. That's what every boat owner in Spain and Portugal knows already. It is illegal though, so not everyone will admit the use of them. Facebook groups and webpages are great resources and should be used by all sailors, but eventually you will be the first one to sight the orcas... And then your boat and crew safety might be on the line. Not sailing for months on end (during summertime, nonetheless), is not a solution for the people living around here. And definitely not everyone can have spare rudders like that company in morocco 😂 Some people here blame the "orca tours" of feeding them, as the root of the problem, others blame attacks from fishermen... I supose we will never know 🤔 I believe that we (as sailors) should try to explain to everyone that the use of firecrackers is the last thing we would like to do, but we have to defend our boats/crew. And it's not like we go out there looking for the orcas to throw firecrackers on their head!! Hopefully, with the continued use of firecrackers orcas will eventually learn to not munch on our rudders. 🤞🏻
