    Wow -- Ann -- the dogs are SO realistic. You did a great job on them! The nose fabric you picked out is fantastic. I guess your "artist's eye" must have helped you to see the potential in that fabric for making realistic noses. You inspire me to make fabric "portraits" of my two dogs--a Lab mix and a Beagle. I tried to do the Lab once, but got intimidated by all the different shades of gray I needed for the "sculpting" of his face. Guess I should just try again. Looking forward to Part 3 of this series. Thanks again! 🥰

      I love the idea of you recreating your fur babies in fabric, I hope you will go for it. My Mister and I walked passed a person walking three dogs this morning; two of them were young Beagles; they are so cute! One thing that I tend to get hung up on - Making this type of quilt; am I going for a very realistic look or simple patchwork animals. The details often cause me pause... I have to think about the big picture. For instance, right now, I'm trying to figure out whether or not to stitch/quilt gray in some areas that are in the original photo (above the nose for instance). The stitching adds color BUT it indents the batting, whereas the surrounding areas will look more raised. The tongue on the light faced dog is an example of that and is part of what I'll be showing in Part 3. I appreciate you watching and your comments, thank you!

      @@FiberDesignsbyAnn Maybe I should start with the Beagle! Her face is basically red and white with not as much shadowing as my Lab, Hank. Maybe doing her first would give me confidence to try working in blacks and grays for Hank.

    • @FiberDesignsbyAnn
      @FiberDesignsbyAnn Před 27 dny

      @@kerrywalker3005 That sounds like a good plan. When it comes to black and white and shadows and light I sometimes reach for the textile paint and/or NeoColor ll wax pastels. If you've seen my House Cat art quilt, you may know that I painted fabric pieces that looked like the many different areas of my kitty's fur and then cut the pattern/patchwork pieces from those fabrics. These dogs, of course, are made from commercial fabric - a greater challenge for me! Sometimes just taking that first step is the hardest but I'm sure you can do it!

    Question: I’m painting flowers on a long shirt. Do you think I could use an embroidery hoop to keep a section taut while painting? Can I use one without stretching my shirt out of shape?

    • @FiberDesignsbyAnn
      @FiberDesignsbyAnn Před měsícem

      Good questions and this sounds like a fun project! If the shirt fabric is non-stretch a hoop should work. It may help for you to watch my "Painted Fabric Landscape in a Hoop" video. I would suggest, when hooping, have the fabric laying on the surface - in other words - have the right side of the fabric (the side you will be painting) inside the hoop instead of on top, resting on a hard surface. BUT if your shirt fabric is stretchy and as long as you are careful with the heat setting - iron a piece of freezer paper to the inside of the shirt area where you plan to paint. The freezer paper will stabilize the fabric, and as long as your paint is not to watery, it should not bother the paint or end result. Don't remove the freezer paper until the paint is completely dry. Long answer but I hope it is clear and helpful. Maybe you'll share you finished project(?).

      @FiberDesignsbyAnn Před 3 měsíci

      Thank you! Yes, Jacquard paints are, IMO, high quality. Yes, they are Stain Sharpie Brush Tip Fabric Markers. Though I usually paint on Pima cotton (the fabric dyed to make batik), this was a 100% cotton made from a thread that isn't as smooth as Pima. It was gifted to me. I think it would be considered a calico cotton; cheaper than Pima, fine to use for fabric painting, and actually easier to hand stitch on.

    Awesome work does the fabric stay stiff or can it be sewn with a sewing machine

    • @FiberDesignsbyAnn
      @FiberDesignsbyAnn Před 7 měsíci

      Thank you. Yes, in my experience, painted fabric can usual be sewn on a sewing machine; many of my quilts contain painted fabric and are machine sewn and quilted. Keep in mind that depending on the thickness and heaviness of the paint, needle holes may be more obvious. If the paint is applied to fabric as a wash or thin as watercolor, and using a textile paint, it can feel soft and much the same as commercial fabric.

      That's sounds like a fun idea. I haven't tried this technique on a garment. I would think that as long as you can us a t-shirt form inside or stretch the t-shirt onto other cardboard it may work. Maybe test it on an old t-shirt or piece of t-shirt type knit fabric. I would try first with the t-shirt or fabric dry and another wet, to see how the paint will travel/move over it. If you do this I'd love to hear about your results. Thanks for watching and commenting.
