Trine Rein is one of very few Norwegian artists who has sold more than one million albums. Her first album, "Finders Keepers", released Nov. 1993, topped the Norwegian album charts for five subsequent weeks in 1994. Her debut album sold more than 600,000 copies, of which 400,000 were sold in Japan. The second album, "Beneath My Skin", was released in 1996, opening markets in several European territories. This album includes Rein's version of the hit song «Torn». In 1998, Trine Rein released the album «To Find the Truth», and ended up selling more than 100,000 copies at a time when the music business took a dive world wide. Still, with these incredible sales figures, the media insisted on defining her career to be a flop when comparing the album sales to her debut album. She has since made her living as a professional artist, releasing 7 studio albums, many singles, and is currently touring with her band solo or in collaboration with rock legend Tony Carey and The Jan Holberg Project.

2022 was an eventful year with both high notes as well as low notes. I'm grateful for all I got to experience, learn and share, and happy for all the loving people I have in my life🙏🏼

I was born (not so horribly long ago!) in San Francisco, and at one, my mother took me to Norway where I grew up on the countryside a little south of Oslo. The first language I could understand, was American, and the first language I could speak, was Norwegian. My musical heart has always been drawn back to my roots, so most of my music has English lyrics.
I write a lot of my own material now, but in the earlier days of my career, I never viewed myself as a songwriter. I guess it took some maturing and a few years of life experience to get to a place where I could trust in my own abilities to compose my own music and lyrics. Since I never took any interest in learning how to play an instrument, I always depend on other musicians and writers to help me put together new song material. It has given me some incredible opportunities to work with amazing people and writers through the years, and I am blessed to look back on a long and fulfilling career.
To me, there is only two kinds of music: good music, and bad music. I don’t care so much about getting stuck in one genre, I just perform music that speaks to me regardless of the origin. I draw the line at cursing in my lyrics. I see no reason to call on the darker side to express myself, and I always try to keep my focus on the light. I know the light, and I also know the darkness.
Asides from my loving family and friends, the most important asset in my life is my loyal followers and audience. Without you guys, there would be no me. I honestly don’t know what I would have become in life if it hadn’t been for you. Making a living in the entertainment business is a rough road, and I admit that I have sometimes wondered how else I could be making a living. I always get back to this: I really don’t know what else to do, so I guess I’ll just continue to do what I love the most: To sing! 🎶

Imbruglia's version wasn't picked because Trine's version included far fewer bras. (Look - I'm just saying - 1996 was a time of angsty teens gleefully consuming anything MTV threw at them. I know - I was there, and yes, I voted for Imbruglia - I found Trine's screechy, powerful, "EFF OFF" delivery inferior to the overproduced, sacchrain, whiny delivery that Imbruglia brought to both my radio and TV. That's who I was back then and I do not apologize for it.) No - you did not misread that - I voted for Imbruglia BECAUSE it was overproduced, sacchrain, whiny and, most of all, vulnerable (I was a very different person in 1996) . Imbruglia's version conjured a person who was hurt, aching, and reaching out to a "Soul Mate" who would reciprocate the unconditional love she brought, while Trine's version sounded much more like a strong, independent woman who was burned for the LAST EFFING TIME and that was *IT*! I appreciated the vulnerability and longing Imbruglia delivered, and that's all I have to say about that.

The title ALIVE may have the most meaning for this time of year. A former prime minister was killed. He was killed by a former member of the Self-Defense Forces (an ex-military man overseas). The mother of the murderer was into religion, donated a lot of money, and was bankrupt. The murderer apparently thought the former prime minister was involved and committed the crime. People seek security, but in Japan, someone I respect said, "It is better to have anxiety than to be corrupted by security," which may be very hard to understand. Even in the U.S., there was a shooting victim on Independence Day, and the perpetrators were young people who should have still had hope, but they went crazy. It is unfortunate what is happening.
So sorry to learn about the murder of your former Prime Minister, Mr. Shinzo Abe, a horrific and meaningless act of evil just like all the other shooting episodes in the world of late. I hope ‘Alive’ can help bring some comfort to those of us still here, and remind us to appreciate and cherish life. 🙏🏼❤️
