You hear him ask that caring question a lot in this talks and interviews: "Does that make sense?" Yes, and if it doesn't make sense, it is more likely the fault of the hearer than his. Lee is perhaps the wisest and most well-spoken poet I have ever heard. I have loved his poetry since I read "Persimmons" in a undergraduate creative writing course. And as much as I love his poetry, I love hearing him talk just as much, maybe even more.

Really patchy English interpretation - the first interpreter, in particular, keeps breaking off halfway with unfinished sentences. Pretty sure it does no justice to the contents of the actual event.

I can't believe I am the first to comment! -- 3 1/2 years later? I don't understand.. It's a great story and you wrote a great book. Hats off! Delbanco really played it down. I got the feeling from his biography that he really didn't like Melville -- while you seemed to know him and love him -- like me.

I read the book and see it as one "outsider's" view of Koreans. Mr. Been is very opinionated in his view of Koreans. This gives pause for us Koreans to reflect and think about what it means to be the product of a long history, particurally in light of the arduous modern history since the opening of the "hermit kingdom." His book reads conversationally and sometimes, I feel that Mr. Been actually looses his train of thought. In all, insightful, but questionable as the entire truth. One thing that struct me was his comment on how Koreans suffered more under their own hands after the war than from the colonial subjugation by the Japanese. There is some truth to that statement. However considering the state in which the Koreans found themselves in, divided ideologically and earning for independence from foreign influence while economically and politically devastated by colonial rule, corruption, and finally the Korean War, I think we've done remarkably well.

I spent 14 years in China...and enjoy Li Bo and Du Fu...but mainly I like the polite behavior of Chinese English students. I had over 5,000 ESL students in my 14 years stay. Most of my students were freshmen in university. Many people in China still try to follow Confusius philosophy...the same as our golden rule..reciprocity..of course, now there are more Christians in China than communist..its true. Jesus is the Word.
