M. L. Lake was a fine composer and arranger. He was also a teacher of Leonard B. Smith, who later wrote the Treasury of Scales. His arrangement of Oberon by CM von Weber is a worthy challenge, and stretched this ensemble to its limits. Transcriptions present a very different challenge than original compositions. They also present musical challenges to all (including conductors) and should there...

    Conductors have generally conducted until death, it is far too late to change this fact, it is definitely a tradition by now however unfortunately precieved it is. They generally conduct right up until their dying breath regardless of old age just like Karajan and Bernstein. I don't know a great deal about Tilson Thomas except for his acclaimed attention to Mahler with the SFSO. I also enjoyed Blomstedt's brilliant Sibelius Cycle with the SFSO.

    I've always loved Milhaud's music but apart from three big hits (you all know what they are!) it is very rarely played in Britain. I first heard this work in a broadcast concert over 40 years ago. Only one recording was available at the time (I think it was this one) and there are only a couple even now. I'm still waiting to hear a live performance. Is the clarinet concerto repertoire so huge that soloists can afford to overlook a gem like this?

    • @jdoggtn7
      @jdoggtn7 Před 10 dny

      What hurts Milhaud is the sheer volume of his work. He reached (if I recall correctly) beyond 500 opus numbers, and while most of his music is masterful, there was a growing astringency and a repression of his former lyricism during and after the 1960s, a period when he undoubtedly felt that his style needed to catch up with the times. Having always longed to hear his "Music For New Orleans" of 1966, when I finally did, from a recording of indeterminate origin, I was astounded at its austerity and severity. It certainly did not evoke the city, and was a hard listen indeed. That has generally been my opinion of the late works of Milhaud which I have heard. But from about 1910 to 1956, he wrote beautiful, lyrical music, even if he was considered something of a radical.

    My college orchestra was invited to play at the MENC convention in Seattle in 1969. I had some free time and I wandered into the exhibit hall where there were lots of horns on display. There must have been other events going on or maybe it was lunchtime because there were only three people in there: myself, a trumpet player trying an instrument at the other end of the hall, and this rather tall older gentleman. The trumpeter was playing the Brandenburg and Mr. Tall picked up a descant horn and started playing along with him! I was flabbergasted! When he was done, I asked who he was. That’s how I met John Barrows. We talked for a short while but now, at 75, I don’t remember much of the conversation other than him telling me that when he got his euphonium as a kid, it didn’t come with a mouthpiece so he (or his dad) whittled one for it. Unfortunately, I never saw him again.
