I was from the same mold, was a firefighter, paramedic, urban police in Baltimore, and a federal special agent. Retired now doing paramedic work, teaching and private executive protection. My dad told me one of the reasons he thinks why ROKs were so good in Vietnam(we're Korean). Back in the day, the compulsory military camp of ROK was absolutely nuts. The amount of inhumane punishment and training they had to go through was unbelivable - I thought things like that wouldn't even be allowed in a POW camp - and since it was a strict mandatory system it was either survive until the duty is over or go out early dead. And it was 3 years. 3 mandatory years of military service where you cannot escape, no human rights inside of it. Lots of people were beaten to death, drowned, died of exhaustion, starvation, you name it. The stories of my dad is just nuts. For example he told me a story when his entire troop was being punished for just one man's very little mistake - the entire troop was ordered to gather outside at night, naked, at -30 degrees celcius, and the drill instructors were carrying water pots to sprinkle it on their body for hours. These were daily incidents and trainings that every man had to go through. My dad said if you go through something so hard like that with someone else, that brotherhood becomes unimaginably tight that if any one of his member is attacked then it's immediate kill or be killed mode towards the attacker. Nothing else matters. So basically the Korean soldiers who were deployed to Vietnam had already went through hell even before they were deployed. And they wouldn't let their officers down, and they would definitely not watch their brothers die. I wouldn't condone anything like that tho, during that harsh time a lot of men killed themselves in the military camp. 3 years locked in a man killing military camp where any punishment is possible! No way..

In S. Korea, I met a KATUSA Sgt whose dad was in Vietnam. He said his dad's unit would decapitate VC they killed and put their heads on stakes around the perimiter of their camp. Were never attacked during his time there. He said, "Their ROE was different." No shit!

Do have to add that an opinion doesn't define truth....there are plenty of men that are warriors of contribution and character and love and caring and responsibility and savage snarling sacrificial mindset....but can't fight, and they are truly a real man, because manhood starts with character, and adds various abilities to it, but a man who can't cook is still a man, a man who can't fight is still a man, a man who can't fix his own car or run a marathon is still a man....IF they are truly a man per God's Definition. Anyone can get fit and learn fighting, but that person is a man before during and after the adding of fighting skill, if the definition of being a man has been fulfilled prior to that adding of ability. We will get back at about 8 'o clock tonight, and transfer him to Greenwood Mortuary. Sorry about the lack of updates, connectivity has been bad and we've been on the road a lot trying to get down to see Ryan in Bethesda. I will try to call when I can to get through and talk to you guys about what I know. Ryan is getting better bit by bit. He's sitting up, he knows where he is, and he manages to speak to us when we are there, albeit slowly. It's kinda like he's really drunk from his medication. His girlfriend Kelly has been by his side pretty much non stop, and his family has been there for him too. Every Admiral in SPECWAR is coming to see him. When Dauber, Biff and I went to see him, we managed to make him laugh a bit, and he gave us a good TU-Bruiser fist pound. His spirits are up, generally speaking. His left eye is a huge question. They ask us every time we are there, if he could see out of it right after he got shot, and I can't really answer that question. I know that doctors are anxious to talk to Jonny Kim. The bottom line is that sometimes he can see light when they flash it into his left eyelid, and other times not. The current prognosis is not narrow. He may have all, none, or partial vision in his left eye, and is going to be crucial in these next few days to find out, for his sake. Marc still doesn't know about his right eye, and he still doesn't know about Marc. Just yesterday he found out he wasn't still in Iraq. His dad is gonna take the burden and tell him all these things as soon as he isn't so heavily sedated, and they are hoping to tell him that his left eye is okay. Everyone is expecting him to be pretty upset, understandably, and his dad has already been asking us if there will be a place for Ryan in SPECWAR if he only has the use of one eye. One of the Captains from WARCOM here told him 'Absolutely, [they] will find something.' Hopefully, that will help ease the burden when he hears all the bad news at the same time. As you can imagine, the family is pretty upset but they are grateful for all the support. There is a guy here, Chris from Group 2 Medical, he is a Frogman who has been by their side throughout. He is a pretty good point of contact for you guys if you want the no shit situation. He is also going to escort Mrs. Job out to Marc's funeral. He is great and has really been taking care of Ryan's family. That is about it for what we know. As for Marc, you guys know about as much as we do. The Memorial and all will be on Saturday. Good to hear the updated version of the video Nick made was sent. We have a ton of Marc's pictures already, and will put something together for the family.
