Forging Knives out of Local Wood, Horns, and Car Bearings in Bhutan
In this video, I talk about my recent two-month long stay in Bhutan where I held another knife-making workshop for local knife-makers. In the process of demonstrating some techniques, I created a collection of knives using local steel and materials: a san-mai laminate Gyuto and two san-mai laminate cleavers.

For a guy who likes to make pizza.

I make pizza cutters sparingly - once a month or every quarter - so this is a newer craft I've had the privilege of exploring and honing. These knives are more detailed towards detail and pattern - a little break away from the usual grind.
My Journey into Bladesmithing
zhlédnutí 750Před rokem
After quitting my job as a product designer in 2018, Balete Blades, a passion project, began. Since then, the journey has been of persistent experimentation and discovery as I push to craft handmade knives, exploring new materials and compositions to complete extraordinary, one-of-a-kind knives. This is the story so far.
Fine work! So good!
Thank you!
Very nice craftsmanship much respect for what you do. Especially in regards to utilizing the indigenous materials. How does 1084 compare to 1095 high carbon steel?
Thank you!!! They’re very similar! I’d say 1084 is simpler to work with because 1095 is more sensitive to temperature. *more in depth answer is that 1084 doesn’t leave a lot of carbon to form carbides like 1095 does, so it’s much less sensitive to temperature and doesn’t require a temp soak like 1095 does. 1095 is much closer to 52100 than it is to 1084 :) Hope that answers the question!
