1800s Insane Asylum Is Now A Buddhist Monastery
zhlédnutí 397Před měsícem
Mendocino State Hospital was an asylum that operated from the 1880s up to the 1970s. When it was decommissioned in 1972, the state decided to sell the property and a long hunt for a buyer ensued. Finally, in 1974, a Chinese monk named Hsuan Hua purchased the property with the intent of turning it into a monastery, now named "City of Ten Thousand Buddhas". To this day, the property is owned by t...

Thankfully, through the dedication of a handful of volunteers, the site has been undergoing various restorations. While a path t...

The concrete work of the first harbor defense guns emplacement is later style than the 1800s would have used. Early 20th century I believe. During either the First or Second world war it is possible that those guns were removed to help arm some of the warships being built to replace others that had been lost in those conflicts. A similar emplacement in the Los Angeles harbor area had that happen to its big guns.

Over the years there have been a bunch of little community's in these mountains. Communes, cults, run by religious zealots, anarchists all wishing to lock the world out and live in the way they felt best. For them. They had to escape the real world because of their odd practices somebody would always call a cop when they tried to practice their lifestyle out in the world. The masses wouldnt stand for it. !

Very interesting tour. Beautiful scenery. Great camera work. Very informative and well spoken dialogue. Hard to imagine doctors actually sterilized tens of thousands of Americans in institutions like that once upon a time in America. Jim Jones had moved The People's Temple away from San Francisco to somewhere in Ukiah prior to acquiring the land in Guyana where who really knows what went down there in '79.. but I digress. Great video. Thanks.

He worked for the CIA its well known and most people in the area that were in his church say he didnt die as he had bodh doubles. Pretty crazy stuff my lil brother dated a girl thats mother watched her mom get shot point blank in the head when they were trying to leave Guyana

The vast majority of the structures are straight tear-downs or winter burns (after stripping asphalt shingles and composite tiles). But if there's any hot water left then it could make a cool park, very pretty in the spring. Thank you for the tour.

Why does the narrator mispronounce Corral? Corral Hollow was named after a corral that early Spanish cowboys used to keep mustangs. There is nothing coral in Corral Hollow.

Just a thought but... similar structures have been used to drive game. Before people had horses they would drive herds of game animals on foot and something similar could be used to direct them to traps/ambushes/obstacles.

The comments are correct. According to my late mother, who in her late teens and early 20s helped drive the Zumwalt (and other's) cattle from Altaville/Angels into the summer ranges of Folger Peak and Highland Lakes (late 19 teens to the middle of the '1920s), knew the Tryons, Raggios, and Carleys of Calaveras County. Former railroad workers, many of whom were Chinese, Irish and Slavic took to the fields to 1) Clear the field stones - not just for cattle but for the safety of the horses of the ranchers, 2) Demarkation lines for property boundaries, 3) Portions of cattle pens/holding areas, 4) Fire breaks. Very nice presentation!

The walls are located all over the hills around the Bay, not just the East Bay but North above Vallejo. Lived in Fairfield for 30 years and hiked up to them a number of times. The damn things don't make much sense. If it was for livestock control they are very poorly designed. Another weird Bay Area mystery.

Those buildings are in pretty poor shape, but really cool. I’m a retired Firefighter, (CalFire) but before that, I worked as a Carpenter for several companies in the San Jose/Santa Cruz area. I also owned my own Woodworking company for 20 years that I ran on my days off as a Firefighter. If the Park ever got serious about fixing the property up, I’d definitely be interested in volunteering.
