This or the 6th book of the series (light bringer) might be my favorite of this series. 5th book was also top tier
@@jimmylee9120 I just finished Morning Star today and I loved it so much. These 3 books books alone have cemented RR as an all-time favorite series for me, but I do plan to start Iron Gold soon! 👌🏼
Just finished this book, and it has become my favorite I’ve read this year.
@@NiaRisingx it’s so good! It had funny moments, heartfelt teary moments…everything!
💡 I watched the movie, then read the book, and agree with just about everything you said. The disconcerting aspect is that women who feel unseen at a certain age, which is a recurring theme in the book. The thing is that you shouldn't let anybody diminish you because you've hit a milestone birthday. Go out and do the things that make you happy and fulfilled. Travel, learn what makes you happy, volunteer in your community for a cause that you're passionate about. You'll be too busy and fulfilled to care about the naysayers. ❤
Ahhhhh, you're exactly right about that! You know, it's been a few months since I read the book and watched the movie, and I still think about it almost daily! I think that speaks to Robinne's writing and how prominent the book's themes are in my life. Love your energy-thank you!!
Love your videos! Do you read books or magazines on the toilet? It's by far the best place to read in my opinion lol
@@Allen-du5hf Don’t normally read on the toilet bc my ass goes numb after 10 seconds, but Red Rising would definitely be worthy of that kind of discomfort! It’s that unputdownable! Hahaha
I just finished the book. Read it twice over in two days. SOBBED SO HARD that i went in to work with puffy eyes and no sleep, like I had just gone through a breakup IRL. It ended the only way it could’ve, and I really applaud Robinne for writing it that way. But that didn’t stop me from trying to find fan-written epilogues to help me cope. The. I found out the movie’s ending was a good palate cleanser and that it definitely was. Not gonna lie though, I still have a pit in my stomach and my heart still hurts and I swear this book is gonna stay with me for a while.
@@chelchelchel2749 You described my feelings perfectly! This story leaves you SO hollow and hurt. My dumb self thought the extra scene in the UK tie-in edition would be more hopeful and it absolutely was not. 😭 I must’ve watched the movie version 7x as a balm to my soul just because I needed more hope! 💔
@@SandrasLibrary ughhhh how I wish I can get my hands on the UK version and read the extra bit! I have also been binging the movie (and soundtrack). The movie is not anything like the book at all but I like to imagine that that was the ending to the book.

I love the Red Rising saga! In Golden Son, the final battle and ending are definitely the favorite parts.
@@Pokucollector the final battle was great…as was the Triumph ceremony but that left me REELING. I thought the Summit Gala scene when he jumped onto the table and gave his speech was one of the great ones, too. This one was brutal, but I loved every second of it. 😩

I recently finished this novel and I enjoyed the history and story! Though those multiple POVs (even though it’s in third person) have me a bit of whiplash 😂 I’m glad it was in third person because if it were in first person with all those different POVs, I would’ve chucked it at the wall, can’t lie… 😅
@@NicolesBookishNook Honestly, I would’ve too! I feel like first person is best when you get to sit in that perspective longer. At least in The Familiar, you almost feel like you’re watching these people and the choices they make!

@@SarahDelSasso the film made a lot of creative changes, but the heart of the story is still the same. I've seen it so many times I've lost count and LOVE it!
✉ thank you!
This is one of the best audio books I've ever read 😭
@@sarahblue7446 it was fantastic! Beautifully done. So glad you loved it, too! 🖤
I just turned 53 and I rem being solene when I was 39! A few younger 20 something year old guys were trying to connect with me. But because of my fear I rejected them. I look back now and regret it because at 53 men don’t consider you desirable. It’s the age in itself that is unattractive. No matter what you look like I think men consider over 50 old lady and creepy. It reminds me of that wedding scene in peaky blinders where the brothers are setting up the arrange marriage of their youngest brother and he freaks out and says “ she better be under 50 “
@@minarose3193 having those regrets is tough! I totally get it. And I agree about the desirability factor going out the window. It’s like sticker shock-as soon as they hear the number, they bounce. But the independent, experienced ladies are where it’s at!
Please continue with the series. I really enjoyed the video, you summarized it pretty well. Prepare some tissues though, these books kept destroying me and I haven't even read Light bringer yet. Edit: if you loved Red rising you're gonna be blown away by Golden son. That book is just chef's kiss.
@@misi24069 oh, goodness. What am I getting myself into?? 🤣🤣🤣 I start Golden Son this week!
@@SandrasLibrary you'll see 😅 similarly to you I also had Red rising on my shelf for couple of years. I bought it after I heard someone say that if you like The lord of the rings (aka my all time favourite movies) you'll like Red rising. But I had different books on my tbr list and in the meantime I got into the worst reading slump of my life so far. These books got me into reading again :)

@@Spartan1312 oh, gosh. Now I’m scared! 😳

The Cruel Dark special edition looks goregous! I read this Hamlet retelling called Smile and be a villain by Yves Donlon and really enjoyed it. It was an impulse purchase and I do not regret it, but I think I have to revisit the original play to fully appreciate it because I'm sure I missed a lot of references. I also read Five Broken Blades by Mai Corland and I need the sequel so bad. I guess one book that disappointed me that I had super high hopes for was Stoneblind by Natalie Haynes. I didn't hate it, but there is definitely less Medusa in the book than I expected.
!!! I’ve been so curious about Five Broken Blades and I think you’ve convinced me to pick that one up. I couldn’t tell if it was supposed to be a romantasy or just straight up fantasy, but I remember the synopsis sounding interesting. Had no idea it was planned to be a series! I really enjoyed Stoneblind but totally agree it was less about being from her POV and more about the circumstances involving her. That one had such an interesting storytelling style-I especially loved the chapter from the perspective of her snakes!
@@SandrasLibrary In my opinion Five Broken Blades is a fantasy quest story with romances (there are multiple) sprinkled along the way. Some of the romance threads hit better than others and they are important to the characters, but I wouldn't say the romances are the main focus of the story, though YMMV. There were so many interesting perspectives in Stoneblind, especially those seemingly omniscient chapters from Gorgoneion. Euyrale and Stheno learning what fear is through their love for Medusa was awesome too. I almost wish Stoneblind wasn't a standalone because the way Haynes approaches these POVs is fascinating.
Favorite Book This Year So Far: A Court of Silver Flame Least Fave So Far: Love in the Time of Cholera (such a snooze fest)
LOL… I hate when that happens, but at least you got some extra shut eye? 🤣🤣🤣 SO glad you loved Silver Flames…it’s the best!
It sounds like you've been having a fun reading year so far! I like your approach in just trying to be more laid back with focus on enjoyment instead of stressing over what you HAVE to read. ⏳️ I'm so glad you've gotten into Red Rising now! While I didn't love the first book as much as you did, there was still so much I enjoyed from it that made me keep going. It's great you found so much to love from it already. I had a friend who felt similar to you. I am so envious of you experiencing Golden Son/Morning Star for the first time. Incredible books and were some of my favorites last year. GS made the characters finally click for me. And MS had me realizing just how much I cared for them. I still need to read the follow up novels! 2024 has been more quality over quantity for my reading year so far. While only reading 7 books so far, they do include both Shogun and The Pillars of the Earth. Two behemoths lol. But I ended up absolutely adoring them, and they are now two of my top 3 books of all time. I havent read anything too disappointing but I didn't end up enjoying Annihilation or the first Powder Mage book as much as I had expected to. But overall, it's been an enjoyable reading year so far. I'm struggling to figure out what to read next after Pillars though! I hope the 2nd half of the year is even better for you! Keep me in the loop on your thoughts on Red Rising please!
I'm definitely enjoying my time in Red Rising...hopefully it doesn't break me! lol. Can't wait to see what this character stuff is in GS that you're referring to! Shogun is also on my list, and I just know it will be heartbreaking! I have the ebooks and audiobooks ready to go, so maybe I will read those later this year. The series was incredible. I will definitely keep you posted on RR! 🔥
Tell me about some of your favorite reads (and disappointments) so far this year!
Finally finished ACOTAR & Silver Flames was my absolute favorite!
Why was Abe targeting Larks family at the very beggining, if he was trying to avenge his broker who was killed by Rowan?? 😂 that makes 0 sense. And also how did they know that Abe’s apartment was across the street from their apartment??
Abe started targeting Lark’s group one year after she slipped Lachlan’s trunk. Pages 58-59 we see Abe hatch his master plan to get back at Rowan through Lark and Lachlan. They figured out Abe was across the street bc of the eye witness account of the substitute male nurse who was last seen with Ethel, which made Lachlan remember seeing the male nurse out walking super early one morning on their street.
@@SandrasLibrary okkkkk…. Thanks for explaining the nurse but I guess I missed it? But it still doesn’t make sense. He was clearly a stalker so which is a more reasonable explanation as to why he was on their street. I don’t get how you jump from seeing someone on your street to, oh he must be a neighbour 😂 I’ll have to re read the page where Abe hatched his master plan but trying to get to Rowan and Sloan by killing random people (non blood relations) to Lark seems a bit far removed to make sense. In short, I don’t think the plot was plotting, but I still enjoyed the read
@@patb2582 for sure! I think part of the charm of this series is the complete and total absurdity of the plot, which is something I had struggled with in the first book. But now that I treat these books as just outrageous entertainment, I can accept all the outlandish plot stuff. LOL
@@SandrasLibrary 😂😂😂😂😂😂 you are right the first book was also a mess lmfao. Unpopular opinion but I think Leather & Lark was better than the first book
@@patb2582 Apparently we’re the only 2 who feel that way 😭😭😭 IDK. I thought Lark’s vindictive murderous streak and her artistic methods were a little cute?? 🤣🤣🤣
This is one of those series that I believe will become classic literature. I’m about 2/3 through book 6 and will probably reread series - or listen to the graphic audio - before book 7. So well written with so many things to think about during so much war and politics while characters and their relationships develop - and come back - as well as the world around them. Book 4 read relatively slow, but I knew why while reading it. You’ll understand when you get to it. It’s needed for the growth of the series. It’ll be interesting to see how far this goes for Mars, the Core, the Rim, and see if it goes further. There’s a foundation set for more, and Darrow’s story is incredible.
If the series maintains like this, I’m inclined to agree. I already see it being up there in my favorite reads ever list if the rest of the books are as poignant and well-developed. Your comment has me eager to continue reading! 🔥
I'm curious but very hesitant to read any of her books again as I've read Dowry of Blood and Hated it with every fiber of my being (except the atmosphere). The only thing that pushed me through it was hoping Van Helsing would appear and kill all the vampires.
Oof-I loved Dowry so much! I’m so sorry it was a hate-read for you lol. I will say that I was pretty disappointed by An Education in Malice. Its premise had so much potential, but then the book ended up being really tame. I expected more blood and violence and taboo, and it didn’t deliver. My experience of it sounds similar to your experience with Dowry. Evocation I enjoyed as a character-driven story with simpler writing and an urban fantasy setting. I’ll definitely be picking up the sequel.
@SandrasLibrary education is described as Dark academia right? I'm sorry you didn't like that book. And the thing is I wanted to love dowry but I just found all the characters so boring.
@@queenvictoria4237 yes-and it could’ve been so delicious! I’m sorry you didn’t like Dowry! She has Savage Blooms coming out next year, so I plan to give that a shot
@@SandrasLibrary may I ask what that is about? I can't find anything on goodreads
@@queenvictoria4237 this is what she’s said about it: SAVAGE BLOOMS is WUTHERING HEIGHTS meets THE CRUEL PRINCE. It’s polyamorous, it’s kinky, it’s drenched in faery folklore, and it kickstarts a trilogy! Adam has been in love with his best friend Nicola since college, but the closest he can come to admitting his feelings is inviting her to travel with him to Scotland in search of a legendary cave from his grandfather’s bedtime stories. When a storm washes out the road, Adam and Nicola find themselves at the mercy of Eileen, an eccentric aristocrat, and Finley, her brooding groundskeeper. The Americans quickly get more than they bargained for as they become entangled in Eileen and Finley’s world of mind games, kink, and ancient enchantment. I’m intrigued!
I feel like I find every book channel when they make a Red Rising video.
Bahaha 😆 Apparently Red Rising should be considered required reading!
I just listened to this audiobook recently and it was incredible! I can't believe it took me so long to hear about it!
Right?! I’m so excited to continue on to Golden Son!
Omg. Yes. I felt the same way. The characterization was on point and I loved how the prose are sparingly purple. I was just caught up in them.
Totally agree on the prose! I was so engrossed in their relationship with one another-the family curse and society drama was a bonus!
The book is great. Just a correction Darrow is speaking with an Irish accent.
Ah, thank you! I wasn’t sure and always seem to mix them up. The performances are incredible!
Mark Lawrence is probably my favorite fantasy genre author. He is amazing in character building with a lot of depth. In a dystopian world, you should expect a dark and complex character such Jorg to emerge. The world is not black and white by any stretch of imagination we should definitely should not expect a archetypes hero in a dark fantasy genre, other it makes a boring book.
Couldn’t agree more! It takes a Jorg to survive such a world.
The audiobook version of the book is superb. The voice actor is phenomenal switching between characters.
I’ll have to check that version out! That’s the downside to the GraphicAudio version when I try to physically read along while listening-parts are cut out or switched around so it takes more effort to follow.
Great review, this book was my intro to the genre and series. The characters were fantastic. I loved the dynamic between Darrow and Cascious. The author is great at varying pace and shattering expectations. He didn't draw out every subplot, some were played out in surprising ways. One of my favorite scenes when the proctor gave Darrow his ring knife-a personal effect from the outside, and then later when he used it.
I spent the majority of this book so nervous for Darrow with Cassius. Especially when Cassius started using the word brother with him. You know it cant possibly end well, but you still have hope Cassius will forgive, and that’s what made that scene in the wood so heartbreaking! And totally agree-the ringknife was clever!
Red Rising is GOAT
Me too! I’m late to the party. I just started Red Rising last month and just finished Morning Star today. I’m obsessed now.
Always late to the party! 😆 Currently, I have to buddy read a different book with someone, but I am hopping back to Golden Son hopefully next week! Can’t wait to see what all the fuss is about in book 2. 🔥

Question to all the ladies commenting - if you could rewrite the ending of the book what would you change it? How would it end for you?
If you’ve watched the Prime adaptation of the book, I’d make it more like that! I think it still balances the themes around women’s sacrifices and expectations but ends on a more hopeful note! 💜
Spoilers!! * * * * * * * * In the end she chose her daughter. As a mom myself, I can totally understand her decision. Her relationship with Hayes was destroying her daughter and Solene chose to protect her daughter by ending it with Hayes. I'm crying days after reading this book, it touched my heart. As you mentioned some of the themes in your review - patriarchy. Isabelle's dad moved on and married a younger woman, had a new baby - no consideration on how this will impact his daughter. Yet he expects Solene to sacrifice her happiness and love for the sake of their daughter. That's what society also expected of her. It's so unfair. Great book, I just wish it didn't end so abruptly.
Yes!! In this “wonderful” system we have, we’re expected to make that sacrifice! This was such a moving, beautifully written book. I can’t believe how viscerally it affected me at the end. Have you seen the movie??
just ordered it! I don’t know why I love email office related stuff but I do! adore the cover :) ✉️
I adore office life stuff, too! It's always soooo funny and relatable to me. Like-how can this be so many people's common experience in life?? 😆 Hope you enjoy it!
I read this book this past week and it's been just as good as I expected since I heard about it! I loved this characters so much! And I agree with you, the book is way more about their relationships with each other than the fantasy plot. If you have any other recommendations of fantasy books with polyamorous relationships/throuple I would love to know! Or other genres would be fine too. This book looks stunning!! Unfortunately they aren't shipping it to my country yet :(
Have you read the Ravenhood trilogy by Kate Stewart? Book 1 is Flock, 2 is Exodus, 3 is Finish Line. It is not fantasy, but I love that trilogy so much. If you have not heard anything about it, do NOT look it up. Go into it completely blind! 🖤
@@SandrasLibrary I haven't read it!! I'll add it to my audible library right now! Thankss
@@carol-ina. I hope you love it as much as I do! 🙈🙈🙈

Which one was best-Butcher & Blackbird or Leather and Lark??
I just picked this up from the library the other day. Can't wait to get into it.
I had to submit a request to my library, so hopefully they’ll carry it soon. I feel like this was a good one to kick off Pride month! LMK what you think of it!
Many thanks for the thoughtful review - and always great to hear some love for the Impossible Times books.
Now onward to book 2!
Loved your review almost as much as I loved the book. I have not been a Leigh Bardugo fan; I tried Ninth House, but only read the first few chapters; I only watched the first episode of "Shadow & Bone." When I learned that this book would be set in Madrid, just after 1588, I had to read it! I have been an hispanophile most of my life. In your review you expressed many of the feelings the book evoked in me. Thank you!
Ah, that is super nice of you to say!! I’ll take it! I’ve been enjoying her adult work much much more than her YA, although I do find her Grishaverse pretty imaginative and love me some Darkling 🤣 Ninth House got better and better for me as I went along and I think I enjoyed Hell Bent even more. I’m a huge fan of her Language of Thorns collection-she’s very talented as a dark fairy tale tone of writer, which The Familiar channels a lot of, I think. She’s definitely got me interested in finding more Spanish stories, so if you have any recs, I’d love to hear them!
