Stacked Surprise
zhlédnutí 129Před 9 lety
While train watching today in Pacific, I got a very pleasant surprise. A hot East bound stack train came thru with UP 1995 (CNW Heritage Unit) as the number 2 locomotive. Then came another surprise-two mid train helpers, one a patched SP unit.
Eastern Missouri Trains In The Four Seasons
zhlédnutí 170Před 9 lety
Eastern Missouri is visited by all seven of the Class 1 Railroads with six stopping here on a regular basis. In addition, at least 5 short line roads are in the area. Experiencing the four seasons makes for some great photography.
UP 1989 At Sherman Beach

I got advance notice that the Rio Grande unit would be leading the Seattle to Marion, AR hot stack train. Even though it was a crappy day, we don't often see this unit so I decided to get it. Using ATCS put me in the right spot with 30 minutes to spare.
Rock Train East

One of the AMTRAK anniversary units. It's been running on the Missouri River Runner between St Louis and KC for the past month. No telling when they will move it out.
UP Empty Flatcar Train
zhlédnutí 181Před 9 lety
Saw this empty West bound outside of Jefferson City, Mo on the UP Sedalia Sub. Just wondering what it might have been hauling. As can be seen, some of the cars are carrying some huge concrete blocks (why I don't know) and some of the cars are meant to haul a heavy load (8 axles).

Yes, I know I'm late to the party, but I want to give my Thanks to you James for showing and explaining all the steps in layman's terms...I learn things best by visual and hands on work as I'm sure many others do too. You made it seem less daunting of a task. I love the testing jig you built, great idea !
Excellent video---good explanations
Nice job! I used bi-color LEDs to indicate switch position on my control panel.
Thanks much for this great info. However I want to wire a crossover with 2 tortoises to a DPDT and 4 signals along with a control panel bi-color led's. I expanded your diagram and wired the 2nd tortoise to terminals 1 and 8 to the first but it isn't working, Cn you please help as you have a great system here but needs to include a crossover so both switches can be controlled by 1 switch. Very frustrated please help! Thanks again
2 Tortoise switches
Thanks for your great videos, they are very helpful. Can you help me wire s tortoise switches together for a crossover with 1 DPDT switch, 4 led signals and a control panel leds? Thanks
I take it that 2516 was just moved to a new location, not an overhaul, correct?
Up 844 meets empty coal drag train
Thanks for the catch of it
James could you take a minute to answer a question for me. Why do you need three signals and where would they be placed on the layout? Thanks.
James thank you for taking the time to make this video and explain your process. This is exactly what I was looking for to help me.
Excellent video. What size bi colored led do you use for your jig and also do you have a pdf on the diagram? Thanks.
I am glad to see that at least one member of the Y6 class was preserved for public display viewing, the N&W rr had very impressive examples of articulated steam power with their Y & A class engines. The 2156 is the sole survivor of the entire N&W Y6 class and this locomotive pays tribute to N&W steam power and their high performance ranking articulated class locomotives.
Unfortunately there’s no Y6Bs anymore. Only Y6As
@@goldenrailways The 2156 is the only surviving Y6a class locomotive still in existence today.
What size/type resistor?
What an important steam locomotive. Like everyone else……I wish it would get restored but know it will never happen.
You explained with the speed and detail I needed to hear. So many of these videos leave me with questions. Thank you. You’ve helped me a lot.
Great video very helpful to someone like me that has an awful time with wiring
Thanks so much. I knew there was a good way to do this. Thanks for the clear and simple video.
I've been searching for a while for a video/article that spells this stuff out for someone who has no real wiring experience (like me!), let alone figuring out what switch to even use. Thanks for sharing this, every other I video I found that seemed promising the person assumed too much knowledge on the viewer's part. I'll be bookmarking this for sure!
What class does this 2-8-8-2 steam engine belong to, "Y6"?
Exactly. (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norfolk_and_Western_2156)
Thanks for the detailed video, but how would you go about powering the frog using your set up? Do you still use the #4 position on the tortoise with signals?
The piston rods are broken
Hello, great video. Question, will this diagram work for o guage track and signals too?
6:09 what’s with all the dial tones?
Hi l like your show. My question what is the kind of led light and size too to use it to the switch machine controller.
Thanks James, Just the video I need !
Could you make a diagram including the placement of the resisters?
Very good video. Could you suggest what AMP toggle switch would you use?
This is very helpful. One question, I have bi colored red/green LED’s but they have a 3rd leg. Is that wired up differently in this diagram. ?
Can I connect the DPDT toggle switch to the accessory input of my AC transformer? Thank you.
Great video ,It taught me a lot. Thanks
Great video.
Need it again on freight details in snow A workhorse.
That K5LLA is a beast, thankfully its up on the head end to! thumbs up
Incredible shot, great K5LLA on this one!
Where did you find your edge connectors? Thanks for the video by the way!
On ebay
Thank you for the outstanding explanation on how to wire the tortoise machine with the lights and all. Best tutorial I've seen on this yet'
Thanks for your video. I like to know the size of the resistors to contact with the common wire of the signal. Best Regards
Just wanted to say that this is one of the best videos I could have found to explain how to connect all of the pieces. Clear explanation and a detailed schematic. You mentioned that you don't use resistors because the ones you use come with resistors already installed. Which signals do you use? If I got a signal that didn't have a resistor built in, where would I add it? Also, can you use this setup and send power to the turnout from the Tortoise as well?
First, yes, you can use the tortoise to power the turnout. Simply use the three unused terminals on the bottom of the tortoise. Second, you MUST use a resistor on each let. The leds I buy already have them attached. If yours don't come that way, simply solder a 1000 ohm resistor to the long leg of the led.
Jus to clarify, your signals must have resisters attached. The leds you use on your control panel DO NOT need resisters, if wired as shown using the tortoise switch machine. The machine itself acts as a resistor. Sorry for the confision.
Thank you. This is very helpful. It's the first one of these that doesn't assume I understand anything and offers me a simple and clear explanation of what to do. I may have to watch your video a bunch of times, but that's okay. I feel like I will get it eventually.
If only.............!!!!! X(
Mama mea
Thanks James, I’ve converted to tortoise switch machines for all my turnouts and I couldn’t be happier. I’d love to do what you have with the signals Kind regards Jonathan
As of 2020, she’s currently back home in St. Louis
I have been searching for a week for a video that speels tour simply for me. I am no good at wiring. You showed up in my suggestions. Thanks for making it simple.
Oh wow! Union Pacific is helping out too?
Well... no it’s just Norfolk........... nvm.
Well y'all she's headin back your way. Thanks for letting her be here in VA for a spell. Hopefully she'll work her way back up here someday.... under her own steam :)
It's on its way back it came through WV yesterday
FIRST TIME, YOU NAILED IT! NICE JOB.
It’s a nice engine, wish she could run again

Hi James thanks for your video Avery instructive I tried your wiring connected to a 9v battery but when I threw the switch it changed the leds but wasn’t enough to throw the switch on the tortoise and the first led in the wiring seemed to be a brighter light than the second do you have any suggestions of what I didn’t do right?
