I think they found cigarette butts in the attic so figured that's where he was hiding. As for it being an old house.... not at the time. Nothing would have creaked as loud as today etc.

So, she talked a lot about how this is an old house, and how old houses behave - creaking and squeaking and such.... but she doesn't seem to take into consideration the fact that at the time of the murders, the building would have been relatively new construction. The stairs would not have been squeaking yet, the locks and hinges would not be sticking in the doors, etc. So moving about the house quietly would have been easier then than it is today. Another historical fact is that people were smaller in general, shorter in stature, lighter in weight as well. So a man of 5 feet 2 inches weighing 120 pounds would have been average, not small. And remember that physical labor then was a matter of survival, not something you did in your free time. It seems to me that this particular person has a poor understanding of history, and that is problematic in her presentation of what happened in this case.
