    About 15 years ago I just connected a SCSI Zipdrive to my Amiga, and had an IDE Zipdrive in my PC. No drivers needed Amiga side, and readily available drivers PC side. The parallel port version is very slow. There should be drivers for it already from back then. Currently my solution for file transfers Amiga-Amiga is to just have a single CF card, and use the CF card with the Amiga I want to use ATM. This also works well in WinUAE and you can transfer file to PC folders. CF is not removable media on the Amiga end, though. Right now, the parallel MicroSD card adapter looks good for not opening or modding the case, but I'm using something even better: Ethernet. Nothing to eject or insert. But one thing doesn't exclude the other, of course. You can have CF, Ethernet, and parallel port devices!

      Thanks for watching. I run SCSI Zip drive on my Amiga 2000, use Blue SCSI for main boot and ZZ9000 for Ethernet (Could use blue SCSI too thanks to @RobSmithDev) internal Compact Flash in my 500+ with parallel ZIP solution as shown, which is faster than you think given period alternatives, it's faster than parallel ethernet :) but you do loose a joystick port.

    Nice solution. However, as the switches for selecting the ROM are just setting the adress lines permernently to high or low, there shouldn´t be a problem to extend them. So jumper pins 90° angled might be better than switches here. So you do not need to open the Amiga to change the Rom to use, but instead use 3 wires with dupond connector and a switch (2 if using 4 kickstarts to select). On an A500/500+ you could 3d print a trapdoor with the switches, on an A2000 a slot cover with the switches and on a CDTV a backplate were the TV modulator was. So easy to access switches without damaging the original case.

    • @hackbuildrestore
      @hackbuildrestore Před 7 dny

      Thanks for watching, glad you liked it. I would absolutely go for 90 Deg headers and switches when using internally. On my rev 6 I have two switches at the rear with a cable soldered directly... There is a post in the community feedback that addresses using this internally czcams.com/users/postUgkx0Khsp_xsaPcBvJT3r7B3_yheBRzKc5nv?si=rs46lI9_PnUEnfj5 my main premise in the video is on the bench diagnostics and having an easy way to use it in early and late revisions of Amigas.

    A for effort. But it's not the best solution. Some UK guy (forgot his name) made a flash ROM emulator. You can flash it via USB while it is in the Amiga, you can configure it to several different layouts for multiple ROM images, and you switch ROMs by holding down the reset key combination for like five seconds. Use two of them for the 32bit Amigas, connected by a wire to synchronize them on reset. I got five of them. They're very nice.

    • @hackbuildrestore
      @hackbuildrestore Před měsícem

      Thanks for watching, and the feedback :) One hopes you have a minimum of 5 Amigas (or other vintage computers) I have seen the emulators, and I agree awesome bits of kit! I agree my way is not right for everyone ! There are a couple of reasons why the more advanced solutions are not a fit for me, personally. The key reason I wanted to go more analog was I use this for diagnostics and when you don't have a keyboard or a mouse attached it's very difficult to use key combinations to switch, also knowing which ROM is selected from the jumper/switch positions is paramount :) The second is simplicity and compatibility i.e. there is nothing in this that you couldn't have built in late 80s and it's recycling some of the surplus ROMs out there :) I did have a whole rant on the more advanced switchers and it came across as I was against them, and I'm not, I may actually put one in my Amiga 2000 ... at some point.

      Nano is 3.3v I/O so, to my knowledge, wouldn't be able to produce a 5v peak to peak square wave from an I/0 pin. It would need a level shifter or a Schmitt trigger to fix the output but possible I guess. 50 Hz for a micro controller is like me asking you to shout every decade :)

    The thing I miss about these kind of videos is (a) a discussion of what it's for, (b) a schematic and (c) how it works. As this is the first time I have viewed your videos, and from my perspective as someone trying to learn the fundamentals of electronics, this is where I am left after watching. I did have concerns on the repeatability of trial and error testing of components on a prototype grade PCB. How many times can the solder/desolder process occur before the adhesive of the pads begings to fail? Over all though, nice video!

    • @hackbuildrestore
      @hackbuildrestore Před 4 měsíci

      Hi thanks for watching, and thanks for the feeding back. I haven't put the link in to the shared project on PCBWay as yet but that includes the things you're missing, I think (I'll let you know when that's up). What kills PCBs is too much heat, not the number of solder-desolder. That said, it only really takes one maybe two goes to get the frequency right. I may do a version with a trimmer pot on so it can be tuned and glued. In terms of wat this does it generates a stable 50Hz (ish) square wave that the Amiga uses to sync its video output, the original power supplies provided this based on the mains AC frequency. Hope that helps a little?

    • @hackbuildrestore
      @hackbuildrestore Před 4 měsíci

      Thanks for watching, glad you liked it. So yes all valid points, it could use a trimmer pot, might even do one that does, but my aim was to make it easy to build from really cheap parts and because it's not meant to be perfect this approach was "Good Enough for Jazz". Again, yes you could use a Schmitt trigger on Agnus to solve the problem of noise, but it was the same thinking of cost, ease of assembly, and the likelihood of just having a 555 timer seemed higher. Thanks for taking the time to give feedback, which means a lot! 😀 Hope you come back and watch more ?

    dont drown parts in spray paint...thin multple coats wins everyday

    • @hackbuildrestore
      @hackbuildrestore Před 4 měsíci

      Completely agree, the macro zoom and angle I guess makes it look like more paint is going on in one coat (that wasn't the full process either) Hope you enjoyed the remaining video all the same :)

    Looks nice. My BlueSCSI V2 is floating around in a quick 3d printed case in a drive bay on my A4000. Where did you get the 3d models?

    • @hackbuildrestore
      @hackbuildrestore Před 4 měsíci

      Thanks 😊. My sister made them for me, it took a few iterations to get to the final version... Not sure if the 4000 has these slots like the 2000, I was planning to ask my sister if I can make this available maybe on PCBWay as a shared project...

    • @noggin73
      @noggin73 Před 4 měsíci

      @@hackbuildrestore The 4000 has slots exactly like the 2000. These are the same as ISA cards in old PCs and even modern PCs will still fit this.

    • @hackbuildrestore
      @hackbuildrestore Před 4 měsíci

      Oh I know the ISA/zorro slots are the same. The 2000 has two special backplates for the CPU/fast slot they have two screw holes from the back not the L style... That said making an L shape ISA version wouldn't be too difficult, I may need one myself for a pc build, I'm thinking of getting a blue SCSI for that too.

    Great work on the amiga. The AI content (correct me if I'm barking at the wrong tree here) is immediately off-putting and makes your video work look generic from the outside. Maybe there's a way to incorporate some of that automation without it being so on the nose. Just my two cents

    That powder blue colour comes across as grey on the camera but the black is much better. Absolutly love your vids, nicely edited and a nice voice over voice. This channel deserves to be so much bigger but lets hope the CZcams algorythm picks it up for the rest of us Amiga lovers.

    All you need is a TICK signal generator and jobs done on that side of things :) EDIT: I was given a link for something which is brilliant! its a combined atx to amiga plug with the tick generator inside it, all in one neat package. I will hunt the link down.

      Thanks for watching... Options are always good, I have seen a few solutions, most cost more than the power supply (which you still need) plus I didn't need -5v gen and a 555 is like 80p and works a treat :) I'll be making a more polished replacement soon :)

    I'm guessing voltage regulator on a heatsink, which is why after recap it worked and then shorted out again. Check voltage across all 3 combinations of the three legs to verify (1 to 2, 1 to 3, 2 to 3)

    Also regarding the undershield. I have 6 x A2000 machines. Only 1 has the metal RF shielding with a plastic sheet fitted. The rest of the machines have the boards just screwed into the case, no metal or plastic sheet. Is this correct? I just assumed only the USA machines had these extras?

    • @hackbuildrestore
      @hackbuildrestore Před 5 měsíci

      It's honestly not clear, I think they all would have had the shielding but I can't know for sure, mine is a rev 4 case with a rev 6 board, so I'm assuming in that swap the shield was discarded probably because of corrosion ... Sorry I can't give you anything more concrete...

    Can I please know the source of the extra edge connectors, the ones fitted to make the ISA slots full 16bit. I have some but the quality is not like the original commodore stuff, ideally I want the same brand as commodore fitted.

    • @hackbuildrestore
      @hackbuildrestore Před 5 měsíci

      If you want them to match you will struggle as I don't think FOX are around anymore, however one possible trick is to use the video port connectors i.e. move them to the ISA positions and then use two new matching connectors to replace the video port connectors... The ones I used are just from china ...

    What guage cable are you using? I bought a 5 core cable, but it's uber thick. I want to build in a switch, was looking at a latching led switch and then have an inline reset button which will go through a project box to keep it sat on the desk.

    • @hackbuildrestore
      @hackbuildrestore Před 5 měsíci

      For wiring to the switch I used some CAT-5 cable I had laying around, doesn't need to be particularly thick for that, does that help?
