    This is not a gin pole; it is sheer legs (or just “sheers” for short). A gin pole is a single pole with guys. Gin poles are quick and easy, but can be difficult to find places to guy them to keep them from moving laterally. The sheers are more stable to lift things, but too heavy to easily move around or take to the top of a tower or building, or too complicated to transport or assemble in the field. It requires three people to safely manipulate a gin pole, but if you are an experienced rigger, the sheers can be a solo job. The half laps on wooden sheers are usually only made in the cross brace so that the legs are not weakened by thinning them to half thickness. In the field, it also helps to supplement the cross brace with a ratchet strap or rope to hold the frame together, since the cross brace is in tension under load. A useful trick I learned about using sheers is to make an attachment for a vertical pole to a second cross brace under the legs near the apex. This forms what sailors call a “gyn”, and can lift even heavier loads, such as lifting something massive so you can back the truck bed or wagon under it. In this use, the feet of the sheers must be secured not only laterally, but also vertically since they might lift out of the holes.

    • @TheChainsawLama
      @TheChainsawLama Před 18 dny

      Yes thank you for that, several other people have already pointed this out. I was at a loss for the American name for this lifting frame and quite a few videos on CZcams called it a Gin pole, so I just went with that. I see now that was a mistake.

    • @TheChainsawLama
      @TheChainsawLama Před 22 dny

      They are mortices for substantial braces for the main beam as I will put an eye bolt through that for some lifting options and also to strengthen the span as it is nearly 20 ft wide. The braces are quite low but the log only needs to be loaded at the height of the bed so it won't be an issue

    I wonder how fiddly it would be to make the cuts in from the end using the mill. Theoretically it should be able to do it and make two nice smooth parallel cuts, leaving just the base of the cutout to be chainsawed and chiselled.

    • @TheChainsawLama
      @TheChainsawLama Před 22 dny

      Yeah I thought of that and I am definitely going to experiment more. For example the mill will thickness very large timbers much wider than I could do on a typical thickness planer but then they will need to be planed smooth if needed. Also shingles, and infinite other possibilities!

    If you have not replaced the “safety chain” that came w/ that battery Echo saw, you may find significantly increased performance by getting a “non” safety chain. Just a thought, as I saw you doing quite a bit of work with the tip of the bar, which is where the safety rakers open up to help prevent kick-back. Nice to have when needed, but they cut (pun intended 🤣) performance significantly when trying to bore or do things with the tip of the chainsaw bar.

    Sorry, now I have more thoughts on meditation versus generosity. Why did the Buddha put generosity, ethics, patience, and vigor at the beginning of the path? Meditation and wisdom come at the end of the path. Also, in the Zen traditions, they only do breathing meditation or Zazen. Are we to assume that one cannot achieve meaningful realization without the practice of breathing meditation? It’s ubiquitous. Everyone all living beings must breathe… is it not wise to teach them how to breathe wisely? My point is I don’t think one has to go to a meditation retreat to learn breathing meditation. There are so many apps, CZcams videos and teachers on Zoom who teach this stuff now. I don’t know. I’m just thinking a lot right now. I should be meditating lol 😂😂😂 have a good day. You can ignore me. No worries at all.😂😂😂.

    • @ultimatemeaning
      @ultimatemeaning Před měsícem

      The progression is quite specific and for example the Buddha taught that laypeople (those unable to dedicate their life solely to practice) should practice the first two perfections. But 1st we must address this point about meditation, and what leads to realisation. And what most people think is that the various techniques associated with Shamata (such as following the breath) will lead to liberation. But this isn't what is taught. It is taught that insight is required in order to achieve awakening and that is what is called vipassana. The truth is there are few people who even understand what real meditation is (apart from stilling meditation) but stilling meditation (Shamata) is something common to all spiritual traditions and not specific to Buddhism. This is the perfection of concentration. So as you see there is a progression in stages that eventually culminates is Wisdom that is itself Insight. It is not as if you can just choose to practice Wisdom from the outset. We practice generosity to acquire the resources to be able to abandon worldly concerns and embark on the journey and then discipline as this is taught to the cause for the development of Shamata (stillness) and also attaining a fortunate rebirth. Without the earlier, the later will not come. A playlist about meditation: czcams.com/play/PLu8Rw0r4aAhQz8z8-zXqowrelLiQAfnC-.html 🙏🙏🙏

    I think what you’re doing is wonderful. My only ask is that you really stress generosity among those who come to your meditation retreat. I’m assuming you took the Bodhisattva Vow. I’m also assuming you’re a Tantric practitioner as well. In any event, to practice Tantra, one was first take the Bodhisattva Vow. I am in no way ready for tantra my goodness that is totally beyond me. I’m still working on the six perfection. I think a lot of people meditate too much and they don’t take their practice into their daily life where it’s truly beneficial. Thus when the occasion arises to practice generosity, they don’t. They treat generosity as something special or simplistic. Simplistic is often mistaken for doll or pointless but that’s a profound mistake. Simplicity is sharp as a razors edge. It cuts right through. It gets right to the point, which is the point of simplicity. Anyways, I wish you the best of luck.❤❤❤🙏🙏🙏

    • @ultimatemeaning
      @ultimatemeaning Před měsícem

      Thanks John for that. What you say is so true. Part of the problem is that there are very few who even know how to meditate, other than a superficial understanding of some stilling techniques. When it comes to the transcendent perfections, there is a reason why these are transcendent, and why transcendent generosity is distinct from ordinary generosity. And the point is the same as the one related to meditation, and that is whether or not there is insight. Thanks for sharing ♥♥♥

      Don't want to use others, can't afford to employ others, and the work is wholesome. Its a chop wood carry water thing 😃

    That is an a frame or shear leg crane. Gin pole is one spare held up by three or more lines and can rotate somewhat around by changing tension in guy line to move load laterally.Does not change the great job you did.

      Thanks for clarifying. Previously never used this term but when looking on CZcams for ideas for the title, one guy described this as a type of Gin pole. Previously I always called this an A-frame or lifting frame.

      Doesn't the cross member of the "A" experience tension verses compression? The notch joints are good for compression. The carriage bolts are absorbing the tension.

      @@arnoldwillis7685 Yes Arnold part of the reason why I made the crosspiece higher up because of the tendency for the upright sides of the triangle to bow out. In practice the majority of the force is directed to the feet of the frame and there seems to be very little tendency the sides to part. Rather the whole frame seems to compress along the face (perform a backbend) so I will probably move the eye bolt to the other side and flip the frame over (so the joins compress and tighten) Some kind of hooked joint would be stronger just as you say, but I my guess that as is the upright legs would fail long before the bolted joints (that appear to be under very little stress) would. Also these joints were incredibly quick and simple to make. Thanks for your suggestions it give me a lot to think about for future builds.

    There is another option for posts. You can use a large rock for a footing and then scribe your post to sit on it. I have done this for my firewood shed (and I am no master woodworker). Here is link for a good you tube video (only 10 mins long) showing how to do this. I found it was actually not that difficult to do using a chisel and an angle grinder. When finished you can actually set the post in place on the rock and it will stand by itself.

      Thanks for sharing that. In fact this is the intended building technique for the meditation huts (Japanese style). But I decided to sink the front posts on the Sawmill shed. As it is an open shed there is the danger that a strong wind could lift the roof so I decided to anchor it in the ground.
