I feel like the placement that blush application is more early-mid 40’s than 50’s. If you look at pictures of Marilyn Monroe, Brigitte Bardot, Eatha Kitt - what have you - from the 50’s, their cheeks are very, very muted. Soft, dusty rose shades were popular for paler skin and hushed corals were used on deeper skin, and usually appear applied in a diffused wash. Not a lot of sculpting going on. The real focal point of the face in the 50’s were the brows and - as you pointed out - the lips. A lot of Gil Elvgren’s iconic paintings for Louis F. Dow (1937-19444) do feature that HEAVY blush application - and I think that’s why a lot of people associate it with pinup in general - but if you look at his later work for Brown and Bigelow (1945-1972) his usage of blush tones starts to change. He starts to use more coral tones as his career went on, and the blush colors start diffusing into his shading, looking less like an intentionally applied cosmetic and more like a natural flush. I think that evolution in his style was in response to the changing fashion.
