Onimusha Series Retrospective | A Complete History and Review
The channel has another gift for you thanks to the Patrons! - patreon.com/IFinishedAVideoGame
TWITTER - IFinishedAGame
DISCORD - discord.gg/VFe6v9GFGX
Once upon a time The Onimusha Series sat at the cutting edge of Capcom's early 2000s catalogue - outselling Resident Evil, Devil May Cry and Street Fighter and introducing the world to a twisted world of fantastical samurai, haunting demons and genuine Japanese history.
So what went wrong? How did the games go from PlayStation 2 phenomenon to utter failure within a single generation? and could it ever come back?
In a world currently obsessed with everything from Ghost of Tsushima to Shogun - we're going to explore the vast history of one of the most peculiar video game series in existence and find out what links Mega man, Final Fantasy, Yakuza and Godzilla into one single confusing franchise.
It's part critique, part retrospective, part review and part history lesson - obviously full of spoilers and obviously full of my opinions

Crazy. I picked up Nioh 1 and 2 two days ago and while playing them I thought to myself “this is literally modern day Onimusha, and I love it” and before that I had Onimusha on the mind for a week. Then I hop on CZcams and find you upload an excellent covering the games and its media. That’s, honestly crazy to me O.o in a good way tho. Anyway, thank you for covering the games and related media, well done ^^ and, I sincerely hope your fight against skin cancer goes well!

As a young Iranian teenage cinephile, I saw Onimusha 3 in a video game store and immediately bought it despite knowing nothing about the franchise just because it had Reno's face on it. Sad that more people weren't similar to me. I thought the game was the raddest thing. I don't know if I'd feel the same now, though. Like always, thanks for great content. Huge fan.

I actually think there hasn't been a better time for a comeback. There has been progressive interest on the feudal japan setting, both by game producers and audiences since the first Nioh. In fact, I'd say Nioh is as a spiritual sucessor to Onimusha as Sekiro is one for Tenchu. Ghost of Tsushima also proves that high production value thrown into this setting can work, and now they're baking a sequel. I believe western audiences also developed way more interest in the aesthetics and cultural elements that made the first Onimusha so special. I'd say the biggest challenge for a comeback aren't really its 'cultural eccentricities', but rather the opposite, that is, how to stand out in an age where it seems like every month or so a game like Like a Dragon, Rise of Ronin and now even an Assassin's Creed main entry might pop in.

i really miss games like these and the xbox ninja gaiden games. the game feels more episodic, and cinematic, because you're moving through a series of scenes, with fixed or minimally moving cameras. now most action games are open world and have a more seamless and free flowing progression. i think the hardware limitations of the ps2/gamecube/xbox era was actually perfect in how it resulted in games that could have high quality audio and visuals, but limited just enough that develops had to be really smart and creative.

Gotta love game reviewers who appreciate the true classic masterpieces like Ninja Gaiden. If you're talking about action game design at any point in your critique, you just have to mention NGB, God Hand, DMC, RE4 and such. I thought Onimusha 3 was great! I remember it being very well balanced difficulty wise but I guess I used the wrong vests uh? I couldn't finish Oni 4 yet, but from what I played it was my favorite, I prefer the "anime style" with a much better story really. I need to go back playing it but I don't remember the characters and tone of the story being all that "absurd". It's just flashy. And oh, welp, now I know why I spend so long playing DoD..

This was a well done retrospective. As someone who's childhood gaming experience is defined by this game, its makes me happy to see the series being discussed again. I agree with alot of the points you said(especially about the difficultly nonsense that gets thrown at you in 2 and 4😅). Idk if we'll ever see a new onimusha title but I hope at the very least they will eventually decide to port the other games to modern consoles( i felt like they should've done that from the beginning). Hope your doing well and you have a wonderful recovery. As a new subscriber, I cant wait to see what else you put out😊

while on the topic of sadly abandoned franchises, i think sega is one of the worst offenders here. shining force ? what´s that never heard of it. nintendo is having great success with fire emblem for decades now? well how about 73 th sonic game that´s the only ip sega has right? what´s this dragonfroce thing people keep fawning and begging us about? never heard of that. how about another sonic game instead? skies of arcadia 2? who would want that, everybody knows people exclusively play sonic. (i mean there are at least rumors of a remaster, but that´s probably all it ever will be, and everybody prefer a sequel anyway) and on and on it goes.
