Awesome Fluorite Specimens from the Lost Trail Mine in Southern Colorado #fluorite #minerals #USA
These fluorite specimens are from the Lost Trail Mine in Saguache County, Colorado. Fluorite from this mine was featured in the February, 2008 issue of Rock & Gem magazine. This fluorite is mostly known for its green color, but blue and purple also occur in some specimens. The mine is on private property and is closed to the public.
Specimen grade pieces look great with one surface polished. The rainbow colors present in some specimens are caused by thin fractures that refract light. Most of the terminated crystals from this locality are heavily etched, but once in a while, specimens are found with druzy quartz coating the fluorite. These are rare for the locality. This fluorite also fluoresces blue under longwave UV light. Like most fluorite, it should be stored away from direct sunlight, as UV exposure can cause the color to fade over time.
If you would like to add some of this fluorite to your collection, I have some available on my Etsy store. Thanks for watching!

    I also let the shape of the rough determine the freeform shape of the stone sometimes. This piece had some interesting banding that I think worked well with the overall shape, and I roughly followed the banding contour when choosing where to put the edges/facets.

      @@EarthScienceFun43 Welcome, and thank you. Reliable information in the fields of geology, mineralogy, and current market of is a rarity. Often, the studies are kept separate as specified knowledge bases are required for individualized jobs. The scrupulous counterfeiting of such a large market (dare I say largest market) promotes many lies and deception. The complexities of trying to place a value on a piece of this planet and convince someone else that it is worth it is pretty wild, though. The Pet Rock guy may not of known geology, but sure knew marketing!

    when i was a kid i was digging a brittle rock with a garden tool and a rock hammer, me and my friend found this fossil that stuck out from the rock (like the ones shown) it was light brown, and was the same color of the rock. it felt kind of soft, like you could break it if you pushed on it. we tried to secure it somewhere at home, but it had dissapeared off of the rock, like some one had scraped it off. It looked alot like a very large rolly polly, with thin lines that ran maybe like ribs along the back. i think about that alot when i see things like this. im 19 now and i want to say i was maybe 10 when i discovered this with my friend. Any insight or pointers helps.. it was definitely very interesting, i can give you the location it was found at if youd like.

    • @limeylimelime
      @limeylimelime Před 26 dny

      Sorry. It did not magically dissappear on the way home. A couple nights later, maybe a week, it disappeared. we had it in a plastic bag. it sat outside by their garage, and both of us at the time suspected my friend's father (who was a total prick, damn him to hell)

      Sounds like a cool find! My recommendation would be to look for other documented fossils near the area it was found to get a better idea of what it was. You might be able to learn more about the host rock and fossils from geologic maps of the region. Rockhounding forums/clubs that are active in your area might have found similar fossils as well, and they can be a really good resource.

    All the above is great advice but here's something I stand by. I think it's good, if you are going to buy, to find, or better yet be recommended a shop and don't be afraid to question the seller, genuine traders won't mind answering questions. Then build up a relationship with that seller, not only will you be in a better position to trust what they offer but they'll get to know what you like and may be able to look out for specimens that would be of interest to you.

    If you have a microscope, real moldavite is jaw droppingly beautiful. It also gets increasingly alien/bizarre looking the more you zoom in. Even if you don't have scientific knowledge of the types of inclusions and whatnot that should be present in genuine moldavite and other tektites, you should easily lose hours plus of your time just staring into the view finder the first couple times you look at it. If you look at a new piece you just bought under a microscope and are not immediately left speechless by how awesome it looks at any magnification level, it's almost certainly a fake...

    Thank you so much for this video! Yes, it’s easy to get scammed now. And true Moldavite has really gone up in price… I have many, bought years ago from Charles Albert, Starborn Creations. Recently bought pieces from Moldavite Family, Starborn, and Inner Visions Crystals. I like Mark Bajersky too. Moldavite is my favorite crystal, amazing energy, great for Arcturian energy! But it’s going to cost you to get the real thing now. ✨💕✨ Just wanted to add: The fakes won’t hurt you (Except perhaps in the wallet LOL!), but they won’t help you in any way, either…

    Moldavites are also Created due to Lightning Strikes, aren't they? As in when Lightning Strikes into Southwestern United States Desert areas, high in iron content. I have been told that B4 from Gemologists.

    • @EarthScienceFun43
      @EarthScienceFun43 Před 2 měsíci

      Moldavites are a type of tektite, which are only formed from meteorite impacts. Lightning strikes can form fulgurite, which is lightning fused sand and glass. Fulgurites contain lechatelierite, a high temperature form of silica that also occurs in tektites. As far as I know, the only two natural processes that form lechatelierite are meteorite impacts and lightning strikes. So tektites and fulgurites can have similar mineralogy, but they are classified differently and also have different textures. Fulgurites are usually hollow tubes with glassy centers and sand fused to the outside. I've seen some really cool ones from the Sahara desert!

    Good vid. I bought mine 20 years ago... and even then, there was what I called "Indian drop glass" that people tried to pass. It wasn't very realistic, but they tried to imitate the texture and shape by gravity and rapid cooling. If you want some, go to a regional gem and mineral show (Springfield MA is coming up in a month from this writing) and bring a loupe... and USE it!

    Why do you assume 112 people didn't know it was enhanced? I sell this material and tell my customers everything about the enhancement. You make this material sound like it is inferior or just made to scam. It is one of the prettier materials available, and not every seller is a "dirtbag." They are natural agates. Semantics

    • @EarthScienceFun43
      @EarthScienceFun43 Před 2 měsíci

      Dyed and natural are NOT the same thing. I explain this right in the video. That listing claims the agates are natural as opposed to dyed. That is where the disconnect is. Treatments should be labelled and then there isn't an issue. From your comment, it sounds like you explain treatments when selling, which is what I am trying to get people to do. You are not being targeted; the people making false claims about natural vs. treated are. People new to the hobby won't simply know about treatments. It's easy for sellers with lots of experience to forget that new people won't know what they themselves know. Like I showed in the cutting portion of the video, this material is useless for lapidary purposes compared to natural agate. It can still be pretty as-is, but the limited use strictly as a display specimen demonstrates that it should be labelled as treated.

    • @EarthScienceFun43
      @EarthScienceFun43 Před 2 měsíci

      If those 112 people knew, it would likely have been from info that could have been added in the listing. Like I showed in the video, the "natural" statement in that listing is not accurate. Not simply semantics. I'm a seller as well, and the #1 rule is describe your material accurately and honestly. 2nd and 3rd would be add a ruler for scale so people know the size and add a locality if you know it. This is simple stuff and so many people in the online space miss it entirely. If nobody makes videos to call out mistakes and/or shady practices, they'll keep getting made.
