Hi everyone, Continuing on my How NOT to make a Larp series, this video covers the dreaded Code of Conduct. The flat face shape of arrowhead only works if it hits square. Hitting at an angle there's the corner. Bouncing delivers more momentum on impact. Coming to a dead stop delivers the least momentum.

    • @MarkWhiteTheLarpGuide
      @MarkWhiteTheLarpGuide Před měsícem

      These prices are based in the UK and from stores that attend events at Profound Decisions, Lauren Trust, and Curious Past Times. The prices were also from 2+ years ago when the video was made. So may not be as accurate as they once were. All the information in the video is based of my own experiences attending Larp games around the UK. So I may have accounted reduce priced items, sales, or discounted items without being aware. Som traders reduce prices on items at events to help clear out old stock, they also don't tend to announce this with big signs, etc. Sorry I can't be off much help, but I would still say the advice in the video is still sound.

      @andreacasazza3350 i don't want to give you bad advice or outdated, and it has been a good 4+ years since I attended a fantasy Larp. But my advice would be to borrow what kit you can, hit up chartiy shops and make the best costume you can afford. Then, attend an event with traders and have a good look around. Get to know them in person. You will be amazed at how open and friendly they are and also how amazing they can be for kitting out a new player. Check out hefty Yeti CZcams channel and look for the two videos he did kitting out new players 😀. He is not a trader, but he does go all around them and gets two people fully kitted out.

    • @MarkWhiteTheLarpGuide
      @MarkWhiteTheLarpGuide Před měsícem

      I don't, but hefti yeti does have one, and you can also find them via Facebook groups. Most larps have a discord attached to it and a means for players to keep in contact between games. With larger events having a multitude of Facebook groups, discord servers, and other online communities associated with them. If you are looking to attend your first larp and are based in the UK, I would start at the bigger larp orginsers (listed in my original reply) and tap up their communities for advice. Also making a reddit post seeking help will get you some great information also. Hope that helped.

    Just because I saw how you weren't quite sure how the poundage for bows works: The pounds of the bow (usually written on the lower limb) describe the draw strength of the bow at 28 inches draw length. (From pivot point to your fingers) For kids it can be 24 inches or less. Depends on what age group the bow is made for. The potential energy stored in the bow is the integral of the strength of the bow over the draw length. Depending on the type of the bow more or less energy can be stored. Recurve stores more than longbow, compound stores the most. That means that more energy is converted into the kinetic energy the arrow flies away with. The higher the kinetic energy the faster the arrow. So a compound bow with 30lbs and 28" draw shoots the arrow far faster than a longbow with 30lbs and 28" draw.

    • @alexandermuller8587
      @alexandermuller8587 Před 9 měsíci

      "(From pivot point to your fingers)" isn't actually quite right. It's pivot point to fingers plus 5/4" as far as I know. Depends a bit on what measure the producer uses.

Until now I have done pletny of shooting, I'm an instructor myself and we have a 3D archery range, but I have no experience with LARP at all. I would be interested in hearing recommendations. Very interesting ideas, although as a potential international player, I was left thinking 'well, this sounds like a fun strategic game but where's the roleplay?' That may just be me though as someone who's not particularly into wargames/board games etc, and just wants to rolepay - ie be in character and interact.

    • @MarkWhiteTheLarpGuide

      The interactions would have taken place over the forums, both in clan and private. Like what you currently have with discord based games. Or play by mail style ones. The idea was to bring that style of roleplay into the game and merge all the styles into one.

    In my experience, people do read codes of conduct but then pretty much forget about them becasue they asume they are always acting the right way, wich is understandable, everyone always thinks they are the good guys. For example safety tools are in almost all larps currently but don't get used. The larps in wich i've seen people using them are only the larps that actually train their players to use them, making meetings in wich the players are required to use safety tools multiple times in order to be able to participate in the game. I've found this the best way to inforce a code of conduct and to quickly learn of any potential problems (or problem-players) you might find before the game starts. Talking about how players should behave during a briefiing or putting a code on conduct in a piece of paper will only be usefull to save your ass when crap hits the fan (or sentence you, depending on the situation). IMO you have to actually train them to behave properly, so it becomes muscle memory (wich is very usefull to have when your brain is way deep in character).

    How big was your larp 8 story tellers seems crazy big

    • @MarkWhiteTheLarpGuide
      @MarkWhiteTheLarpGuide Před rokem

      We had a core team of 8 during development and had around 10 or so people interested in doing NPC roles and reffing when the game launched. A lot of people who pulled out of development over the years had expressed a keen interest to rejoin when the game was ready. Development is a long and often boring job that is a massive time sink. So it's understandable that it's not everyone's cup of tea. The game could have run with a team of 4 if required, though. The whole point of the development was to do loads of the work up front and plan out a whole years worth of games. We wanted the running of the games to be as easy as possible as that was the area that had the most pressure. We could have caterd for up to 25 ish storytellers at once due to the downtime plot areas. Plus, if they were willing to share, then the number could have easily increased. The core postions for storytellers would have been world plot, and then under that position would have been one Sabbat storyteller and one camarilla. Then, the rest of the story tellers would have been downtime plot and assistant poations. The game could have run with one storyteller. But the quality of the game would have suffered.

  • @plutarch324

    We had a bad experience with a code of conduct. There was a group of players that tried to weaponize it. They would ride the line harassing players but never explicitly cross the boundaries, meanwhile they would pounce whenever one of their perceived "enemies" crossed any kind of line and try to get them kicked from the game. We moved to a benevolent dictatorship model where the guiding ethos is "Don't be a Fuck". The premise is that everyone generally DOES know what's appropriate and what isn't, but even if they're not, people get a warning. if they persist after the warning, its possible they'll be kicked.

    • @MarkWhiteTheLarpGuide
      @MarkWhiteTheLarpGuide Před rokem

      We went for a grievance system to help with stuff like that. But to be honest, the code of conduct always needs a rule 7 don't take the piss clause. It gives you as the organiser some room to wiggle if a player/group of players start to disrupt the game. We would have still followed the grievance system structure to ensure it was handled fairly. But dick players would have found no home within our system no matter how many friends they would take with them.

    i would add, for any prospective larp builders or managers out there trying to launch a new game in their areas. A.) do not reference your gaming group on paper with any owned intellectual property. like for instance, if you are building a game based on VtM using their ruleset as the basis, do not referency your game by anything known in that property. pick something generically benign that still convey's the focus of the game. and run with that. a simple protection in case a snippy IP comes crawling around demanding restitution for playing their tabeltop roleplaying game. B.) if you have attained any level of meager success with your larp, register for a non-profit status with your local governments to protect your game from outside litigation. Non-profit doesn't mean you are not taking in a profit, it is a basic legal protection that states that a majority of the funding gained is utilized to host/create further gameplay encounters at a later time or utilized for other non profit reasons (charity, maintenance on site rental places, ect.). this trick has worked for the SCA reenactment society for over 50 years and counting. it can work for you.

      Yep, I definitely thought at the start it would make things easier. Then quickly realised it was just holding us back. If we had gone original IP, we would have been able to do so much more without the need to cover all the IP bases. No one would have lost their mind if we didn't have all the clans playable as if it was our own IP we could have done away with that. Plus, it's not like we would have lost a massive player base by not using the IP as over in the UK. The vampire Larp scene died out in the late 90s. Definitely, on the top 5 list of big mistakes, was using the World of Darkness setting

    history is always a wise teacher, and a broad ocean from which to draw inspiraton from. In this day and age, i would say the greatest assest to any larp or member of a larp would be their local Public Library. there, one can utilize resources to research history or find inspiration upon its shelves for lots of different reasons. yeah, the internet exists, but does not compare to wealth of specific information one might find in a library that may not always exist online. besides, where else can you freely walk in wearing your persona clothes while inquiring to the librarians about locating books on 5th century living without drawing ire? (seriously, librarians have just about seen it all) you'd get sussy side eye walking into a bookstore without buying anything. At least in a library you have a greater chance of meeting individuals who may share your same passions. yep, libraries are oft underated as places of interest.

    machiaevellian. that's the word i think you are looking for. a Games master needs to be partially somewhat machiaevellian in certain aspects of a game to maintain playability. game goes soft, GM sneakily entices outside cluster to invade for resources while making it look like another faction encouraged the behaviors. wheels within wheels and tangible rewards to entice those who maybe hesitant to PvP another group or game hold point. game goes too intensly hard, Gm needs to balance the anger and enthusiasm with something non combat related to diffuse the tension in the air (while still making it look like someone else did it. like i said, Machiaevellian...if you do it right, it looks like you are not doing anything at all. and that adds an element of fright and complexity to any game.) the thing that always confused me about certain versions of vampire larps is the subtle fact that all rules are not set into stone. just because a publisher reprinted, updated, and re-released their product rulesets in an attempt to be more modern does not mean it is holy writ gospel. all the GM's actively running a particular ruleset can hold a player congress amongst themselves to discuss the rule changes and summarily agree or dissagree to run certain aspects of the updated rulebooks because it does or does not work as a functional guide for overall gameplay. this is the power of the players, and is oft overlooked, because games publishers tend to forget that their games thrive on the will of the players and not the other way round. if gameplay no longer suits the will of the group, change it to something that does, and agree across all active larp chapters and branches of that particular game. training days....i cannot stress enough about the need for training days. you want PvP in your game? a GM needs to schedule training days for it's playerbase to actively practice the format, rules, and structure of physical combat. can't count on fingers and toes the number of times i've seen PvP where one side knows the rules but chooses to fudge them, while the other side is happy go lucky newbies who may not know how to preform safe combat within the rulesets only for all combat to eventually devolve into a gilly brawl with people getting hurt, feelings getting hurt, and people packing up their toys and leaving because no one either taught the rules of combat to the group as a whole, nor enforced the combat rules as written. Training days are important, forgoing that, having a mandatory 1 or 2 hour combat training session at the start of any event weekend can mean all the difference between a good time, and a shouty angry butthurt time. give a babybat a dagger and they'll play for a day, teach a babybat the forms of combat and they'll eventually take over and rule the world (if only for a weekend).

      Wow, some great insights and amazing advice. We had planned to deliver training to the NPC crew and have rules ref's at hand. But I never considered outside of a safety and game brief to offer any form of training to the players.

      @@MarkWhiteTheLarpGuide a mandatory training session serves 2 purposes. A) it puts everybody, both veteran player and newcomer, on the same page game wise. you use that time to iron out any questions, clarify any misinformation, and teach basic combat saftey and forms all in one go with the veterans teaching the newbies. and B) you use that time as an introduction between opposing groups of players. getting new players familiar with the settings, pairing them up with vets, a very tangible teachable moment for casuals and the curious to see where they fit into your story mythos while learning how to have fun safely. I'm frankly shocked that this hasn't been implemented sooner or adopted on a global scale for larps. how does anyone expect to successfully grow their larp, if they stay hidden behind veils of secrecy and closed circles? that is the path to game stagnation and it's eventual disintegration.

      Lol, yep, I've been caught out with that. But it was a friend who was getting a lift from me. Not only did they over estimate how much room in the boot they would have on the way to the event. They then lost their character at the event and purchased new spear and large sheild for their new one. Forgetting it had to then fit in the car. It's amazing how easy it is to forget space and transportation limitations.

    The first and only larp I'd ever been to was a "By Night" Vampire Masquerade game run by my friends over a decade ago. I could never get into it because of some limitations of the game and my own difficulties with operating in crowds (big or small). I couldn't keep up with the politics or the fact the game runners said I couldn't play a character opposite to my gender. I still have the hardcover manuals for the game though... I think they're even the White Wolf version... Fast forward, now I'm helping to build a new fantasy larp that I kind of fell into by accident. The hardest part, right now, is trying to get players when no one knows who you are. We might even have to cancel our first play-test because we can't get enough people. ): That whole thing you mentioned with the mapped buildings and post-codes is amazing! That's a huge amount of work. It's a shame it didn't get used.

    personal advice? "show, don't tell". communities are built from social media by demonstrating gameplay, lore, arts n crafts, and how-to's showcasing one's particular shard of larp, generating interest over time from the curious and casuals who observe intreguing videos that showcase the best of a particular larp. that how you build communities and general gameplay from the ground up. hour long waffles about "why my lurp is better than your lurp" is generally a massive turn off for casuals or the curious into further digging into one's gaming hobby, and there seems to be a lot of those floating around in social media. and you're right, too many people spend entirely too much time making negative video content for their brand, instead of showcasing the absolute best of their social circle. is the slow spiraling death knell for any gaming movement. almost ever gaming community over the last 50 years has eventually had (is currently having) their old school gerigoths vs. babybats moments with new versions vs. old. the bridges come from individuals who look at all the dumb shite and say "eh, feck this...i want to play everything." and do so. but these are my opinons and should be taken with a grain of salt (user experiences may vary from creature to creature.) funny anecdote to me: "that weird moment you dip into an online vampire conversation and after reading the flaming gamut of passioned debates over clan and species...casually dropping in a "I'm Talamascan" into the feed, then watching the entire conversation explode into absolute chaos with curses, death threats, and some humorously creative uses for stakes and orifices. ahh, fun times....sometimes i do so miss my youth." heh, but yeah, in conclusion....larp social media should be a showcase of the creativity of the circle you are playing in, and less grumbling about the negatives. there is always room in the sandbox for more toys, just don't forget to show off your shinies for all the new people.

      Thank you for sharing this. It's definitely a hard community to crack, that's for sure. I find that larpers in general only watch and support what is relevant to them. If its not about their game or of benefit to them, the content is often ignored or criticised. It's not what I do at my larp, so your wrong kind of response. I noticed that there is very limited CZcams channels covering larp as a whole and offering advice. I think the only other one I have come across is My Adventureing Party. I tried piviting this channel to general larp advice and guidance. But was met with a lot of negative feedback and poor view counts. My love for larp has definitely died a death over the last 5 years 💔 😢.

      @@MarkWhiteTheLarpGuide honestly, you know what has never been done for a long while in larping vids? someone starting their journey from scratch and documenting their adventure exploring various larps. we're talling from soup to nuts, character creation, to kit outfitted, to building props, to actually going to a larp and filming sessions for a possibly curious public to see. most social media i've seen is mostly lone cries in the wilderness for information or help on how to do something, or where is there a local group to play with (anf the general waffling rants about the state f the gaming union). not much in the teaching departments for new or cautiously interested potential players. that's why i advocat for a "show, don't tell" mentality for larp elders to help spread the joy of their games. too many games and larps die (and have died) in the dark when they chose to close themselves off from the rest of the world leading to stagnation and death of their dreams. a singular message to all of larpdom of "show me why i should come play your game. show me how to craft/build/create the things your make. Weave for me a story that i may play in and welcome the curious with open arms." this....this is the way.

      I did give this idea a kind of a go with my blood and fire larp series. I think over 5 videos I covered most things. The problem was that no one really watched them as the second you cover someone else's larp. 90% of the larp communitie zone out as its not relevant to them. I also tried making generic new player advice videos to some success. But haters are going to hate and all that. Plus, due to there being so little on CZcams about Larp, no one really searches for it. It is a good idea, though, and fingers crossed, someone takes up the mantel and does a better job than I did 😀

    At events without catering my group usually splits the tasks for mealprep. We do have a designated cook as well, who is an absolute life saver, but of course, he doesn't do everything on his own. Having a good sized group also minimises waste and storage issues. Also we split who brings and prepares what. That does create the issue that we have to take differing budgets and transportation options into account, but so far we have always managed to find a common solution.

    To give you the opportunity to learn from a mistake I made in the past: don't promise costume changes in game. My character is slowly mutating into a beastfolk-raven. At one event, I wore a bandana, with the ingame explanation that I had to protect the feathers that were slowly growing in. That meant I had forced myself to finish the headpiece before the next event. I managed to do it, but had something gone wrong, I would have had to come up with a ln in game explanation. So I would suggest to leave room for costume changes coming later than expected. Better yet, if you want to have the character play that comes with your character knowing they will change in some way, prepare the costume changes beforehand. You can always leave the additional pieces at home
